The water puzzle with the 3 gallon and 5 gallon for exactly 4 gallons is solved like this:
    1. Fill the 5 gal
    2. Use the 5 gal to fill the 3 gal (don't spill) and you should be left with 2 gallons in the 5 gal.
    3. Empty the 3 gal and then pour the 2 gallons in the 5 gal into the 3 gal (leaving 1 gal of empty space)
    4. Fill the 5 gal and then pour of 1 gallon into the remaining space in the 3 gal.
    5. Set the 5 gal with 4 gallons on the pad before the bomb blows up.

I’ve always loved that puzzle because you can solve it doing it the same way but opposite.
      Fill the 3, pour 3 into 5
Fill the 3, then pour 2 into 5
Empty the 5, pour 1 left in 3, into the 5
Fill 3 and empty into 5

It reminds me of a math game we played in my 7th grade math class…. Called Buzz Bang
In a spelling bee elimination round you went around the room starting with the number 1…. With every number that is a multiple of 3 (6,9 , etc) or has a 3 in it (13, 23, 35) you said buzz,
      Same thing with 7 (14 , 17, 21, 72) you said bang ) with numbers with both (21, 37, 42, 63, 73) you said buzz bang

    • @axelfoley133

      There's a second solution.
Fill the 3 gallon and empty it into the 5 gallon. Leaves 2 gallons in the big jug.
Fill the 3 gallon again and empty as much as you can into the 5 gallon. This will leave 1 gallon in 3 gallon jug.
      Empty the 5 gallon.
Pour the remaining 1 gallon from the 3 into the 5.
Fill up the 3 gallon and empty into the 5 gallon and you end up with exactly 4 gallons.

    • @uosdwiSrdewoH
      @uosdwiSrdewoH Před rokem +6

Yes and no. Like all the other Die Hard this one started off as something else that was adapted to fit the Die Hard franchise. He doesn't just track him down for the hell of it. The FBI think John was involved in the heist so he loses his job and pension. He goes after Simon because he has nothing left to lose. The ending was changed because it didn't fit with the franchise and was a little bit anticlimactic since it was just two guys sitting around a table when DIe Hard needs a big action finale. Not to mention part of the appeal of the movies is that John is just a guy. He's not someone who can track down an international terrorist on his own after somehow finding all the other bad guys and killing them off screen.

The ending was originally a lot darker where Simon gets away. John then tracks him some time later ( after being fired from NYPD) and plays Simon Says with a bazooka that has the right way to aim shaved off. After tricking Simon to play an unlivable game, John walks away nonchalantly.
John came off anti-heroesque and out of character in this so they scrapped it and rewrote it which where the pill bottle ending came from.

Shanelle: I think what makes the bottle of aspirin work is that Simon and his band of Merry Terrorists probably entered the U.S. via Canada at the same place they were leaving the U.S. later. He is shown with some sort of spasmic disorder during the film, presumably needing the aspirin to alleviate the symptoms. He buys the aspirin in a shop at the border crossing, not even noting that the name of the border crossing shop is printed on the bottom. That moment of levity / carelessness when he villains out and gives McClane the aspirin and then leaves before the good guys are killed in the unnecessarily complicated death trap leads to his, literal, downfall... ;-)

That Simon is so meticulous, and has everything planned to the smallest detail, but the downfall is a tiny casual thing that he couldn't possibly have thought to pay attention to, and resulting from something he couldn't fit into his plans, John having a headache. On rewatch I love the big well thought out plan, falling to such a literally small thing.

Fun fact: the first "Die Hard", and "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" are based on separate novels, by separate authors.
The first "Die Hard" was based on Rodderick Thorps': "Nothing Lasts Forever". Which, it itself, is a sequel to "The Detective" (1966).
"The Detective" was made into a movie in 1968, with Frank Sinatra as the title character. Only, McClains name in that series is Joe Leland.
"Die Hard 2" was a novel called "58 minutes" (1987) by Walter Wager.
"Die Hard: With A Vengeance" feels so similar to the first is because only "Die Hard", and "Die Hard: With A Vengeance" share the same director: John McTerinan.
"Die Hard 2" was directed by Renny Harlin.
Oh, and "Die Hard 2" was supposed to take place at the Dullus Towers in Washington D.C., but, was filmed at Stapleton Airport in Denver Colorado

Shanelle, I think it's a stretch for a location name to be printed on a bottle of aspirin, but compared to falling 50+ feet onto to metal and walking away and being 50 feet underwater from a massive explosion (where the effects would be worse) are so far out of the stratosphere, that a name written on a pill bottle is not worthy of notice.
And not one of those three things is the most outlandish. But it's Die Hard and damned fun, so nobody should care.
    Great reaction as always. Peace!

If you rewatch the movie it takes place in the fall/winter. The characters reference the unseasonable warmth and the term "Indian Summer". An Indian summer is basically a hot snapp where from October to late December the weather can get unseasonbly warm for a few weeks to even a month, like a second summer. So yeah it's a Christmas movie, that's why the department store was so busy.
Elephants have trunks so they ar always ready to travel. Cause a trunk is a type of luggage.
5+0=5 You fill the large jug up with water. 5-3=2 Then you fill the (empty) small jug with the water from the large jug. 2+0-2 You empty the small jug leaving the large jug 2/5ths full. 3-2-=1 You pour the conents of th large jug into the small jug leaving it 1/3rd empty. 5-1=4 You fill the large jug up and pour it into the empty space in the small jug. Clear as mud., Right? Or 5 minus 3 is. 2 gallons. 2 gallons in a 3 gallon container leaves 1 gallon of space. 5 minus 1 is 4.

Great reaction! At the time, the coolest thing about Willis and Jackson together was that they were insanely cool having just been together (but maybe not shared the screen?) in Pulp Fiction. Great casting to put them together. Still a very good action movie, but does seem to run out of steam a bit towards the end - everything after the boat explosion feels kinda tacked on and anticlimactic. Much better than the second one though which was excessively violent and mean-spirited and had none of the joy of Die Hard.

One little Easter egg that a friend had to point out to me:
When John is asked how he's been occupying his time, he replies, "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo." This is a lyric from the Statler Brothers song "Flowers on the Wall," which was the song playing on the radio in Pulp Fiction when Bruce's character encounters Marcellus right before the infamous pawn shop scene.

I caught this movie in the cinema as a teenager - and like you, it was everything I wanted from a Die Hard movie. I felt a bit cheated not having Al and Holly, but the duo of Zeus and McLane more than made up for it.
One of the things that I loved about the original, is that it feels so isolated. John really is a lone wolf, cut off from the outside world and in fact, it feels as if the location of Fox Plaza with its entrance raised off street level is completely isolated. But DH3 went completely the other direction and it was such a refreshing change; to have John have a sidekick and place them in amongst a city full of people.
Almost 30 years after this movie was released, I still find myself cackling at McLane being launched out of that water pipe. Such a great piece of unexpected physical comedy.
Two years after the movie was released, I found myself in NYC. Man, what a great place!

There is another Bruce movie that didn't go over as big, where you get a lot of the sarcasm and jokes while there is an almost comedic crime caperish kind of thing. You might enjoy it. It's called Hudson Hawk. Good cast. Pretty entertaining. The aspirin bottle. A lot of times hotels etc will stock small bottles of aspirin and other things that are imprinted with their name on them. The translation was "North of the Border" I believe. Oh and Die Hard 2 was supposed to have taken place at Dulles airport in D.C. Seriously Shanelle, give The Sting a try. Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw and so many really good character actors too.

Started getting a little confident after a few laps around the ice and decided to go faster. And then, coming outta turn 4, TOE-PICK! I was like Superman flying through the air. I just remember arching my back and tipping my head back hoping I wouldn’t slam my face into the ice. Instead, I landed right on my ribcage and fully lost my air. I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t stand so I crawled to the edge and grabbed the wall. It took forever to breath again. Everything started getting dark, I think I was about to pass out.
But, being of the walk it off generation, once I could breath again, I just traded the ice skates for hockey skates and went back out there. No more falls, thank goodness.

There are two ways to solve the water puzzle:
    1. Fill the 3g jug, pour it into the 5g jug. Fill the 3g jug again, use it to fill the 5g jug, leaving 1g of water. Dump out the 5g jug, pour the 1g of water into it, then fill the 3g jug again and pour it into the 5g jug, making 4g of water.
    2. Fill the 5g jug, use it to fill the 3g jug, leaving 2g of water. Dump out the 3g jug, then pour the remaining 2g of water into the 3g jug. Fill the 5g jug again and use it to fill the 3g jug, leaving 4g of water.

The bridge used to get to the boat was the old Cooper River Bridge here in Charleston, SC. At the time, people weren’t exactly keen on trying to cross it because of its age. After 76 years, it was closed in 2005 and replaced with the Arthur Ravenel Bridge.
I saw this in the theater when it was released. You could tell the people who had done work because they were wearing “Crew” shirts. When the bridge scene came on, there was a guy near the middle of the theater yelling,”THAT’S OUR BRIDGE!” Needless to say, we all chuckled.

This was the first time I saw a giant screen and the sound came from everywhere ... I felt I played in the movie itself, it felt so real and there was so much action going on, I was exhausted by the time it was over. There's a callback to a scene in this Die Hard film, in "The Incredibles" (2004) - when Frozone (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, naturally!) has a gun drawn on him, also by a scared cop. As in this film, the cop in "The Incredibles" has good reason to believe that Jackson's character is up to no-good. In each scene, the tension is created because the protagonist, for the greater good, can't comply with the cop's instructions, and you genuinely do not know whether the cop is going to fire.
Another thing to note: In the first "Die Hard," the L.A. Police are incompetent from one end to the other, except for Reginald. In this film, by contrast, the NYC police (as well as ordinary New Yorkers) are depicted as not only competent but as courageous and as rising to the challenge.
Die Hard With A Vengeance is truly one of the great action films of all time.
