Still the best of the best. Worshipped them since 97 first time they melted my brain in Seattle at NAF studios. Seen em 30x at least not once have they ever not delivered.
I always remember when these guys got together, it brought to drum and bass what was needed......dark and funky and that old school feel to it, you knew that they had done their fair share of MDMA!! Haha!! They were good on their own but together they are just splendid!!! Love eternal people
I went to Slammin Vinyl at Bagleys the Friday before this. 1998-2002 was the best time for D&B, it's not just because that was my Era (my late teens, early 20s), listen to an Andy C set from the last ten years or so and you notice which tunes get the best reaction.
We've probably bumped shoulders in the main room at bagleys between 5-6am to Andy C's Night Flight a few times and never realized. xD I know for sure I was at that one, I went to every slamin' vinyl and united dance there for about 2 years straight around that time. Some of my best memories ever. :D
optical still has a love for analog, i reckon he could make these types of tunes but he probably doesnt have the time or the need for recreating a sound he already mastered so well. Ed rush is still going but he makes neuro now. Tastes can change.
@@Methodman666 One of the old Virus synths (where they got their record label's name from) Access Virus A/B/C and the later Ti, an Akai s1000/s2000/s3000XL etc. sampler (especially for the drums, but they probably used it for most things) with an EB16 effects module, they also used an Emu sampler at some point too iirc, a Mackie analog mixing desk to overdrive the crap out of everything they put through it multiple times for a heavy saturation/distortion effect (I assume they would do it in layers, so put a filter sweep from the virus over a sound they made, sample it then run it through the desk to over drive it and resample it back onto the Akai, add another fliter sweep from the Akai and over drive it again, add some other effect and over drive it again etc. - they would overdrive a single sound easily 5 times they said in an interview before) that's how they got them gnarly sounding basses from the Virus distorted in the way they did with all that movement still baked into them, they also used a focusright analog EQ (which I'm sure they had some tricks with as they said that had a big part to play in the sound of, I think their drums iirc but probably used on a lot of other stuff too), and that's the bulk of it that I know of. I'm sure they had a ton more too, but pretty sure that's the meat and potatoes of their sound ... other than a crap ton of skill working the gear too ofc. Oh and they both played drums, so probably made theirs' from real samples they recorded (just a guess though), and that's probably why their kick's and snare's had such a chonky thump to them compared to many other artists from back then, who more often than not likely just sampled their drums from other tunes or used a drum synth.
@gmshadowtraders They did an interview where they talked about this before, they said they basically had to stop making the D+B they did because the scene moved on and made everything in mostly the digital domain as time went on, and all the new stuff had way more top end, and was way louder than they could make their tracks how they used to, so their stuff wouldn't stand up next to newer tunes in a DJ set. So that would kinda limit them to only being able to do sets of only their stuff, or just only old stuff, and meant DJ's would opt not to play their tracks because they would no longer really fit in a set as all that digital brightness would just drop off every time they played a track from Virus. So they had to evolve, they joked "unless we can convince the entire D+B scene to cut all the top end off their tracks" xD.
Happy nights spent recording these sessions from kiss. I grew to really hate classic FM on 100.3 for the constant classical crap ghosting in to my tunes.
Yeah a nice mix I like Ed Rush and Optical. As for the "classical crap", at a guess most of what folk are listening too now is about 200 years old. Hands up anyone who thinks anyone in large numbers on a radio station or elsewhere will be listening to this mix or similar in 2222?
BECAUSE THEY CAN. 😂😂😂...your ear caught it quite right, but that has been one of their trademark/usual ultra-exitement-incentives for ages -> just techstep+neuro to the bone! EPIC DUO...TRUE O.G.s 🥰🤩🤍💚❤
so hard-hitting and timeless STILL! So FRESH after 25 years! So many percies compacted together in just 90mins! All hail!

The energy right off the bat is incredible. Nobody, including themselves, can do this now.

*Legends* Sounds just as good as it ever did, and is almost prophetic in it's apocalyptic imagery of the future.
The Golden Age of drum and Bass! God I miss The End!!
Just listening for 2 seconds and seeing the speed I knew this is a mean mix
It doesn't get any better than this. I could loop this forever.

Super Villain sounds.
Saw them at a rave around this time. Amazing -- attending one live performance has kept me searching for their music for 20+ years. 🙂
Dam that makes me feel spoiled! Although I still wish I could see them live playing their old stuff again now too...
