Back in the day, no one cared what you drove. If you were a cruiser, you were in. The scene is full of fan-boys now. This video is absolutely epic. Thanks so much for posting. Turning 40 soon and this has taken me back to the good old days.
Tbh 100mph wasn’t that impressive but 200bhp was for a young person. I passed my test in 98 and every boy racer aspired to own a 205/golf gti, Astra GTE, RS turbo, GT turbo (and not much else) after their first car. I was so in owe of this so I decided to save up money for one instead of going for a small engined first car like most normal people did. Come the time I was looking to buy a 1.6 205 gti but that was until I got insurance quotes! The cheapest was £3k third party (£5.5k in todays money), so that put an end to that. I then spoke to my parents about getting put on their insurance which was agreed too but my dad talked me into getting a BMW e30, which I did. While not a sporty as the GTI it went well with its 1.8 engine and I suddenly became very popular in college 😂. Insurance through my parents was 1k a year so manageable. I crashed it 2 weeks later which devastated me, but luckily it got repaired. Owning a BMW for a first car was great but it was the freedom that made the biggest impact on me.
I was 20 in 2000, drove a black XR2, and went down Southend most Friday and Saturday nights with my mates, just like these guys. Great memories and a bit of nostalgia, thanks for posting it
Excellent That’s me @9:20 with the red bmw 325i unfortunately got stolen a month later 😩 Was a great car with lots of good memories, thanks for uploading 👌
@@Truckergunners Thanks mate Yeah it was found stripped and burnt out Sad ending to a good car,I did get paid out by the insurance company and then bought a E30 M3 which I had for a year.
@@danthompson1955 dude thats shame, did they ever find the cunts ? Looks good from that clip, my mother had an 86 xr2 nicked was recovered but in pieces,
@@danthompson1955the Azevs really did look great on a lowered e30. How much did you purchase the m3 for? I bought a black m3 back in 04 which was a cat d repaired. It was rough as assholes but it was taxed and moted. Purchased for £2800 and flipped a month later for about £3500. I was at an age where I had hardly no money so I was happy to sell the car. Naturally I didn’t think 19 years later that I could sell all the parts on that car for like 40k 😂
I think the scene plateaued in the late 90’s and then began to decline in the early 00’s. The Saxo at the start of this video is a good example as even as a young person you could finance one with free insurance included, many cars including the saxo looked the part as standard so modifying them wasn’t as much of a priority. Modding in the 00’s was still going but it was more geared to lairy body kits and stereo upgrades which became an expensive hobby. Many people now have financial interests in other things like gym membership, online shopping, games consoles etc.
Still gets busy down there now at weekends as I'm 10 minutes from the front and can hear them coming in to the town along the A127 giving it some beans from the lights 👌 🤣
Spooky thing is all the people you see in these cars are likely now to be either 40 years old or well on theor way to being 40, this was 2 months short of my 18th birthday at the time
Yeah, I used to do exactly the same as what these guys did in my late teens/early 20’s. I’m in my 40’s now and it seems like such a long time ago, almost like it didn’t happen if you know what I mean.

Southend car cruises. When i was 18 this was my idea of a fun weekend. Fast cars. Donuts. Burnouts. Birds. Whats not to like ? Obviously most of the cars had questionable taste.
We’re all sat on our sofas on a Saturday night watching this video wishing we were back there in our RS turbos, MK1 escorts, cossies ir novas 😂 but insted we are 40+ and have Nissan quasqais

Brings back great memories of ‘the bridge’ and the convoys to Southend. Days without video game addiction that kids will never understand. Good times!
