Nice, I just came back to San Francisco from Fiji. I was born in Suva and grew up in Nasinu for 9 years. I use to bug my dad to take to me Nausori Airport so I could look at the planes in the early 90's and he did every time. I became an AvGeek myself the 1st time I saw prop planes at this airport and the 1st time I saw a Boeing 737 it blew my mind. At that time Fiji's national airline went by Air Pacific and when I saw it's 737 pull up for the 1st time I was amazed at its sheer size. I hadn't seen anything bigger than that till I visited the U.S. for the 1st time in 1995 on board the Air Pacific 747-200, this aircraft really took me back as a child. It's sad now seeing the Airlines retire the 747's and it going out of production.

An amazing aircraft that I have had to deal with in a previous SECRET life that's hidden here on CZcams. Maybe the best aspect of this aircraft is it's matched with the incredible gas turbine PT6 which when this aircraft first saw service was a new style of power plant. A reverse example of a bad airframe and engine combo is the nightmare known as the GAF Nomad...nuff said. The airline Aeropelican flew Twin Otters between Sydney to Newcastle, but these aircraft suffered from a lot of corrosion, especially on the props. Once an aluminium blade starts to get leading edge delamination from corrosion it's life cycle is very short, you may only get 1/3 of a blades 'normal' life. I think the last Aeropelican twin otters were seen was in Ansett livery and again ...nuff said. Other Twin Otters I had to deal with were crashed ones from PNG. It was amazing, engineers would patch up a crashed aircraft to fly it to Bankstown for a proper fix up. And sadly in PNG there were some very bad crashes into mountains killing all onboard on a number of times. It's an amazing honest, robust and multi role aircraft but I see that goodness is much to do with having two PT6 gas turbines. So many great aircraft use this incredibly reliable engine and to me is the quiet achiever in aviation. Same with the Rolls Royce Dart, but it was never quiet and built on the old Frank Whittle design ideas. Maybe Paul you can guess what my old job was.

I thought you don't like hot climates ;). There is no excuse not to go to Tahiti with Air Taihiti Nui that co-shares with Qantas from Sydney to Papeete and do some island hopping with Tahiti's regional carrier - Air Tahiti. By the way, Air Tahiti is planning to purchase the new ATR42-600S (Short landing/take off) type. Air Tahiti operates its only international flight between Papeete and Rarotonga (Cook Islands) and do some island hopping with Air Rarotonga. From Rarotonga, fly back to Australia via Auckland on Jetstar, Virgin Australia or AIr NZ.
Your 4 videos on Fiji Airways has been very refreshing compared to your usual run of the mill bland videos of major global airlines that are similar to the 100's of youtube commercial aviation channels. Also the Fiji Airways video's is good promotion of Fiji Airways and tourism to Fiji.
At the moment, there is no Alex Praglowski Aviation style of videos for the South Pacific region.

Bland? Paul? Who has the balls to show that he starts some international flights with one or two "coffees" - the ones in a martini glass. Who is a real self deprecating Aussie who will tell you that he does not know how to pronounce some things. Whose quiet humour permeates the vids. Who makes no bones about being an aviation nerd.
The bland people have no humour, mostly harp on about the things that go wrong with travel, and who drink water or coke with their business class meals. Give me a break.

This reminds me of my flight from Suva to Nadi in about January 1994 in a Sunflower Airlines Twin Otter. I was weighed for the first and only time of my travels. The aircraft had at least 15 seats but many were not filled. The flight was uneventful. I was returning to Nadi to resume my flight having opted to stop over in Fiji on my way to Sydney from Honolulu on QANTAS. I'd used the bus (cost was $7) from Nadi to Suva but it was way too long to do it on the return, so I'd bought a one-way ticket from a travel agent in Suva.

Weighing passengers is common throughout the pacific ie Samoa,Cook Islands,Vanuatu ect.
I know Im a plus size flyer and have been re-booked onto bigger aircraft if the flights are full

Great video, The DHC6-400 is not a bad Aircraft, Our national airline has several of these and are frequently used to fly from Mahe island, where the main international airport to Praslin island and is a 15mins flight, I have been on those like two years ago, I found it interesting though I wish the fuselage was as big as the ATR as I am tall and I literally have to hunch to get to my seat. Another thing if you hate turbulence the best time to fly is between End of October to Mid April as the rest of the months are windy due to the South East Monsoon and the peak is around July to End August, that's when we also get spectacular landings and missed Approaches of bigger jets, meaning its a test of the pilot's skill, though our national pilots nail the landing all the time like 98% no mean to brag. A couple of times we also get spectacular take offs I guess depending on the load.

Lol those scales reminded me of flying from Ayton to Cairns in a Cessna 402 back in 2007. My Mrs. was none too impressed at having to stand on the scales in the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere, with an audience of wisecracking Aussies.

Two items; 1) You should have mentioned that it does NOT have a pressurized cabin, and thus is limited to 13,000 feet. 2 ) The weighting of passengers is to calculate fuel load. I first encountered weigh-in decades ago when flying from the mainland to a small Caribbean Island where the fuel prices were a lot higher and was told that they loaded fuel to meet the exact maximum allowable takeoff weight to reduce the amount of fuel they needed to buy at the higher price for the return flight.
