The higher you go, the less distinct the timbre. Try playing a sine, triangle, saw, and square wave in the 7th octave then the 2nd octave. That’s why EDM basses vary so much.

Listening to the more simple arrangements at the beginning makes you realise how strong and distinctive the basic melodies of all the original Pokémon tracks were.

There was only so much you could do with the GameBoy’s sound system. The fact that they managed to make such an iconic and instantly recognizable soundtrack when they had so little to work with is absolutely insane.
Kevin O’Brien they are amazing pieces of music that would probably translate well through tons of instruments and mediums
wallyballjacker No “probably” about it, you’re 100% right. take literally any track from gen 1 (and 2 honestly) and I guarantee I can find well over a dozen distinct remixes/arrangements/covers of it, each one in a different style. That’s part of what makes this soundtrack so timeless.

Well...considering that it is recorded in half the speed or less and then speeded up on the computer(can be seen on some hand movements but you can also hear it around 0:50) I don't think that many are trembling.

@@Fenixdan His tone sounds like melted plastic. He distorts it to the moon and back to mask his sloppy playing. Ichika plays clean and with compression which highlights mistakes but sounds crystal clear. I don't know if you have listened to 'ichikoro - james?' but ichika can sweep pick extremely quickly even with clean tones which are less forgiving for that technique.

remember that the old gameboy could only play 4 notes at the same time and that includes other sound effects. Makes it all the more impressive imo

Don't know if it still exists, but if it does, the composer would've had it since he had to convert it from his home computer where he composed the music to the Game Boy format using a program he had written.
Speaking to the music itself, what the composer managed to do was extremely creative. In order to create full-sounding songs with only four tracks (one of which was used for noise), he used tremolos (two-note figures) and arpeggios (3+ note figures) to simulate more voices. Once you know that, you start to really notice how much this approach was used!
