Watching as much of the show as I have, I believe that one of the coolest parts about it is that he didn't have to. You could reeeeeeeeeally tell (for the most part) who were stupid (and good/ bad people), who were great, smart, funny, etc. I was truly surprised at how some were so close to being average, everyday people.
I say Craig saved himself, He isn't the guy who can sit in his show and talk politics. And people get offended by second these days..he wouldn't last a day...bless him he was the best

I wonder if it's because people like Billy Connolly, Frankie Boyle and Craig Ferguson come from Scotland- and Glasgow specifically. Scotland (and Ireland) are rain-drenched and can be desolate places. People who live there then tend to need entertainment and a funny perspective. I think that's why there's so many comedians in Scotland and Ireland. Craig is only entertaining people incidentally. Primarily, he's entertaining himself. By the way, all three Glasgow comedians happen to be part Irish.

Never saw Shalhoub back....

Yes he did but indirectly. The character of Doc Martin originated in the film Saving Grace, for which Craig was co-writer and starred in. Because of that, he received writer credit in the Doc Martin series. Saving Grace is probably his best known film, and was well received.
