Did you know that actress Reese Witherspoon owns the shop Draper James and has a home in 12 South? Great video, we too loved Edleys BBQ! 😊
Ya'll have to come to Chattanooga. Just 2 hours south of Nashville. We have a great little city. We even have our own Aquarium.
@@anthonytsi we just visited Chattanooga for the last 3 days, had a fabulous time! Great city!! Very nice people, excellent food!! They should visit!
@@JohnandCaraRetiredTravellers Did you all go to Ruby Falls?
@@anthonytsi not this visit, we did last year. We did go to Lookout Mtn and Signal point. Stayed near the aquarium, excellent location. Went to a concert at Walker theater too.
Thanks for the fun video. We do say jam in the US, but the distinction is that jam is made with mashed fruit, preserves are made with large pieces of fruit, and jelly is made with strained fruit juice (no pieces of fruit). And biscuits can be eaten with gravy.
Don’t forget marmalade
In America we have both scones and biscuits. They are very different. We would never call a scone a biscuit. You had biscuits, which are great with jam or sausage gravy on them.
And also as breakfast sandwiches. Sausage egg and cheese on a biscuit is my fave.
To me, what they ate looks more like a dinner roll than a biscuit.
Most of our scones in the US resemble what the British call "Rock Cakes". Tea scones are usually plain or made with raisins and are much lighter.
@@marydavis5234 Yeah and I probably wouldn’t eat a dinner roll with jelly. Interesting that that’s what they serve.
Scones are much, much rarer in the US than biscuits.
I prefer buttermilk biscuits. In Texas we say: jam, jelly, preserves, and marmalade (which is a citrus jam). I love biscuits and sausage gravy.
The fire hydrant is for the firefighters to get water from when there is a fire. They are painted colors that tell the firefighters water pressure and amount.
Biscuits and scones are 2 totally different things. If you free yourself from matching new things in a foreign country to something from home, you may find you come to appreciate the place you're visiting even better. It's the way of a seasoned traveler
The whole basis of their channel is to compare the U.K. and the US…???????
We don't have to be nasty. British people call biscuits what we call cookies. Like cookies that come in a tin can, those are biscuits to them.
@@annfrost3323 you obviously don't understand my comment
That is an oil-based biscuit from the look of it (maybe melted butter or oil) as opposed to a cold-butter flaky, layered biscuit. You're right that it's more like a roll, because it basically is. American biscuits usually never have sugar in them.
Yep, those are too soft to be real Southern biscuits. There are different ways to make biscuits. The traditional way is to hand form in a bowl of flour and a puddle of liquid. which is labor intensive. Usual method is to roll flat and cut out. The easiest way is to "drop" the mixed dough from a large spoon onto the baking pan, which may be how scones are made from looking at their shape.
@@loboheeler I don't find making flaky, layered biscuits to be labor intensive. In fact, they only take a few minutes to make. Almost no mixing, short baking time. Cutting in the butter can take a few minutes. Drop biscuits are different as well, and the fastest to make, and they don't look like those either. Easiest way to make drop biscuits is with Bisquick. I looked around and what they bought look like "angel biscuits" which are yeasted biscuits that are made with softened butter cut in and allowed to rise.
@@firstenforemost I’ve been to loveless, those are buttermilk biscuits. There’s no yeast in them.
Yes, baking soda to help with smells in the frig.
I always thought that what Brits call jumpers, the USA calls sweaters. But Joel’s Nashville top, I would call a sweatshirt. If it had a hood it would be a hoodie or hooded sweatshirt - although some have zippers.
Fire hydrants for appearances??? No, we have them so firefighters can connect their water hoses to a source of water to put out fires. Or did you mean the color they were painted? They are usually painted a color that is easily spotted, but that hydrant's colors might have been for appearance, lol.
Fire Hydrants are painted according to the gallons per minute it can provide. Usually between 500 and 2000 GPM.
PRETTY SURE HE WAS BEING SARCASTIC LOL
@@limitlessvictoria Sometimes hard to tell with those two.
he was definitely being sarcastic
I’m a Nashville resident and I am so glad y’all came and visited my town! The place you visited with the what would dolly do bag is Draper James, which belongs to Reese Witherspoon. Scones are hard biscuits. Biscuits are most often non yeasted where as rolls are. We call your biscuits cookies. Most Nashville residents don’t go town very often.
I LOOOOOOOOVE the Loveless Cafe. 😍 I live in Colorado and every time I’ve been to Nashville, my hubby and I make it a point to go there. I actually got to meet Carol Faye, aka “The Biscuit Lady” before she passed away (so sad! 🥺♥️👩🏽🦱) and she was precious. She had been on several TV morning news and late night talk shows and I had asked her who her favorite was and she said that Conan O’Brien was the nicest guy (btw his podcasts are hilarious). The last time we were at Loveless, it was November of 2018 and they had this awesome peanut and cream pie on a chocolate crust. It was TO DIE FOR!!!!! 🥧🤤 I encourage anyone to check it out, but be forewarned that you’ll need a car to get there since it is a bit far from the city center (17 miles/27km SW). Love you Joel & Lia! xoxo Christine from snowy Colorado, USA ☃️
That Draper James store you went into with the What Would Dolly Do stuff is owned by Reese Witherspoon.
The store Draper James that has the What Would Dolly Do? bag is owned by actress Reese Witherspoon who is also a Nashville native.
Joel the peperoncini are AMAZING with pizza. You drip the juice all over the pizza and then eat it with the pizza.
Definitely looks more like a dinner roll than a biscuit. We know what jam is. Jelly is your jam (made of juice only). Jam has fruit mashed in it. Preserves has chunks of fruit in it. We will often use the terms interchangeably which is why she probably looked confused. "Do these Brits not understand that we are talking about the same food?" Just my guess. It would be like some asking if you talked to your dad and you responded with " you mean my father?" We'd wonder why you bothered to clarify.
I used to think that biscuits were like scones until I went to England and had a few there. I have now come to realize that they are completely different foods. Not even the same ingredients. But both are awesome!
Yaaaas! So glad you got the authentic American biscuits breakfast experience.
Loveless Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot in Nashville. I had no idea they had a pop-up location. Next time visit the restaurant out near Belle Meade (I know it’s a little far from Nashville Proper but totally worth it.). They have the best Grits!
Jellys, jams, and preserves. Jelly has all of the fruit pulp filtered out, jam has the pulp left in, preserves has pieces of whole fruit.
Yes lia, baking soda in the fridge to absorb Oder that may linger.
Jam, jelly, and preserves have specific meanings.
Jam is made with whole mashed fruit.
Jelly is made with just the juice of the fruit.
Preservers is the whole fruit not mashed.
Preserves can also refer to any the previous that have been prepared to be stored for long term.
It makes me so happy to see y'all having so much fun here in the South!!
Happy New Year to y'all and best wishes from Texas!!
Fire Hydrants in the States are painted in different colors depending on the gallons per minute it can provide. Each municipality will have its own color scheme.
16:00 - Baking soda absorbs odors. They've been recommending putting an open box in the fridge since the 1940's (if your fridge has odor). It has all sorts of uses.
If you stain a ceramic plate, say with blueberries, putting some baking soda on it, getting it wet, and letting it sit for a few hours will take care of it.
Have yall visited Savannah? If not, you should.
Should have gone to Monell's in Germantown.
Snicker Doodles are like the first cookie any kid in US makes. They make them in home ec in school a lot too.
Love seeing you explore Nashville! I’m born and raised in Tennessee. 💚
Joel and Lia, when my wife and I were in Nashville I kept taking us to the Loveless Cafe, they have the best biscuits and fried chicken.
In the Memphis area, my family made biscuits with self-rising flour, crisco and buttermilk. Love with jelly and butter. Jam is with the seeds. Scones here are sweet. My grandmother made blueberry scones.
Congratulations Lia on you engagement.....
What you had was probably a marmalade preserve. A fruit native to the southern United States. I come from a farming family in Georgia, skipped the family gig myself, but I’ll never forget having biscuits and marmalade preserves my grandma made on a cold winter morning. We take our Matriarchy very very seriously in the south, nobody’s grandma cooks better than someone else’s.
Yes, an open box of baking soda traps smells, so it keeps your refrigerator fresh.
Oh my goodness I laughed so hard the fire hydrant being but cutest thing ....
I hear Brits all the time comparing American biscuits to scones. American biscuits are NOTHING like scones - as you finally discovered! 😊
What a fun, fun area! A lovely Friday gift to awaken to! Can’t wait for the BBQ video!
First time watching. Thanks for visiting and making a vid. Nashville is amazing. So much to explore and so many awesome food places.
I live minutes from the Loveless cafe on highway 100. So good!!
Really loved this video. It felt like I was exploring Nashville with you! Thanks for including us in your journey and I’ve always said it! ❤️🥂
Great vlog Joel and Lia!!! 👏 Looks like you had fun in Nashville!!!
We have jam, jelly and preserves.
Jelly is made with strained fruit juice, no pieces of fruit.
Jam has cut up fruit pieces.
Preserves have large chunks or even whole fruit. 😁
My mother had an old saying for people who jiggled when they walk, "Must be jelly, jam don't shake like that!" 😆
This video made me so homesick for nashville. I was born and raised in Nashville and my very first house was right in the middle of what is now 12 South. It was a great neighborhood back then before nashville exploded.
I grew up in 12 south - but it wasn't nearly as nice back then and wasn't even called 12 south yet! Glad y'all had a great time
I LOVE The Loveless Cafe - their biscuits are the best I’ve ever had. The last time i ate there, I ordered a dozen extra to take home to Kentucky. Yum! 😋
Biscuits down south are savory and are amazing as Biscuits and Gravy. I hope you tried some.
Happy Sunday Joel and Lia!!
Glad you guys had a fun time in Nashville. 😘
I lived in Nashville for over 20 years moved an hour away 3 years ago. You have seen more of Nashville than I saw in the 20 years because I haven't seen most of the tourist areas except when family came to visit.
We say jam, preserves, jelly etc. depending on the product.
Oh geez, looks like they gave you packaged dinner rolls from the Piggly Wiggly supermarket. Maybe they were just using something to put the preserves on that they were selling.
Yes, we call it jam... If it has bits of the fruit in it. If it's just the fruit juice it's jelly. Preserves are like jam but I think there's even more of the fruit bits.
In America some places call it Jam others preserves.. but it's not confused with jelly which is made of juice ,sugar & gelatin.
God that Med food looked so good right now 🤤
Snickerdoodles are perfect for dunking in tea!!!! I love them!
Pimiento cheese! Yum!!
I'm so glad you guys allowed a viewer to join......amazing !!!
There are like 3 different types of biscuit style. Those look like cream biscuits- they are made by dumping heavy cream and flour together- they are fluffier than traditional biscuits
American buttermilk biscuits can be dipped in gravy for a savory approach or buttered and jammed for a sweet approach. The key to true American biscuits is the grind of flour. White Lily brand flour is the best.
I always add a little butter 🧈 and then strawberry 🍓 jelly - jam to the biscuits. It’s a good combo. They looked so light and fluffy! Looks like you had a great time! That bbq place I’m sure is great! 🍗 How did you guys like the cookies and bbq?
Looked so fun!!!
The standard color scheme for the caps on fire hydrants is Blue for the highest gallon per minute rating, green for the 2nd highest, orange for the 2nd lowest, and red for the lowest.
Been to all those. Christie Cookie main wherehouse is in Germantown another little area in Nashville. I Go by most those shops very week in 12 South your not to far from some local parks great for running or hiking. Percy Warner and Edwin Warner Parks are beautiful and located about another 2 miles past Centennial Park and Parthenon.
Someone probably already said this, but I snort laughed when Joel said the fire hydrants are for decor…maybe in some places, but the fire trucks hook up to them if they don’t carry their own water, so they’re using the city’s water for fires
This was really nice
You guys went to my favorite area in Nashville. I love 12 South. Jeni's is soo good. The Frose Rose is absolutely delicious.
my fav is the lemon blueberry
We have jams, jelly and preserves. Jam has little seeds through it. Jelly has nothing in it, but the congealed fruit flavoring. Preserves have large chunks of fruit throughout.
Love love love you two!! I have been binging for the past few days in preparation for my upcoming trip to the Chelsea Flower Show visit next month! Where is the connection? I don’t know but stumbled across your channel and I am thoroughly enjoying. Thanks for sharing your experiences and I have subscribed to your other channel as well - Those Two Brits!😎😍
I look forward to Joel and Lia touring the Greek Islands. Lia can teach him how to snorkel.
Not sure if you caught this, but those "YALL" socks are a parody of "Yale," as in the University.
Baking soda in the fridge keeps it from smelling bad.
Sorry. We do not put sugar in our biscuits.
Fun!!!!
FYI Tribe Kelley is owned by Brittney Kelley and Brian Kelley. Brittney is married to Brian Kelley who is member of duo Florida Country Line. He’s the Florida half. Brittney does the design work.
That dress Lia was looking at is a jumper. What Joel was wearing is a sweatshirt.
Great video loved it.
Great video thanks
Fire hydrants are definitely not for appearances in the US. The firemen plug their long hoses into them
I absolutely LOVE your channel! Y'all have great reactions.
BTW Fire hydrants are where fire trucks attach hoses to spray the city's water on a blaze.
Baking Soda absorbs odors for a while. Eventually it can start to stink from the absorbed odors if left too long.
Tazikis is so amazing! You guys were in my back yard!
You guys need to try some proper biscuits and some good biscuits and gravy.
😁
I am so excited for this video! I was just wondering if you knew the the DRAPER JAMES store was Reese Witherspoon’s! This is her brand and she also lives here. Love you guys.❤️❤️❤️
Now my stomach is growling, yummy that looks good.
That was a real fire hydrant, not just for show.
People put baking soda in the fridge to absorb odors. It doesn't work very well.
I went to Loveless Cafe in 1993 and had country ham with redeye gravy. It was a memorable experience.
I only buy preserves and jam, no jelly.
Pleased to see at least two Brits Finally! Learn what a Biscuit is. A biscuit is not a cookie. It’s a breakfast item much preferred than toast. Biscuit and butter. As others have pointed out, ‘jam’ is not a generic term as apparently used in the UK area. It describes a particular form of fruit spread. Always fun to watch foreigners describe food we take for granted. Just like y’all chuckle at us when we’re in your country trying to eat something. Imagine when we asked if they had biscuits at breakfast. The look we got from the waitress was one of complete bafflement. Lots of fun.
Yes there is no sugar in the mixture because they are BISCUITS!!!!!! Not scones. Get it right.
in America, Jam is berry preserves with the seeds in it. Jelly is preserves without seeds. Preserves usually refer to stone fruits.
No, seeds aren't what define jam vs. jelly, or preserves. Preserves isn't "usually" about stone fruits. The difference between each is about the consistency and whether or not gelatin is used, and how much of the whole fruit is used. Jam and preserves don't have to have seeds in them.
Not quite hun.
I always get the blackberry preserves w the loveless biscuits.
Next time you come to Nashville, you have to have to visit The Pancake Pantry. Their Sweet Potato Pancakes w/ Cinnamon Syrup..😋mmmmmmm
As soon as I saw Edleys and Draper James I knew exactly where you were! Christie’s use to be a Sprinkles cupcake and they had a cupcake ATM!
Baking soda in the fridge is to help absorb/eliminate odors.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Preserves and jam is the same, both have the fruit in it.
I’m sure this is going to repeat some of what other people who said, but now that you’ve had the biscuits from Loveless Café, you really need to go to the real place and eat. It may be my first choice of places to take people to eat who are visiting town. And I’m glad you decided to go to Edley’s, which is the barbecue place I would have recommended. There’s an Edley’s that is so close to me I can stand in my living room as I’m doing right now and see it straight ahead of me. I definitely look forward to seeing the video where you eat there, even though the one at 12 South is not the one I most familiar with. Tiziki’s is good too, though it is a chain and they are in over a dozen states. Anyway, it is fun to see your hometown through someone else’s eyes.
I do love the 12 South neighborhood but I don't have a million dollars to buy a house there, ha. Draper james is Reece Witherspoon's shop. I love Christie cookies and Edley's BBQ. Next time you come, you should try a donut from Five Daughters.
O.k. on my bucket list when I go to Nashville in May!
Too bad you didn't come to Nashville a few years ago! It was a wonderful place in the 60's and 70's. It been ruined by all the new folks moving here!
@@janhart6307 Indians said same.
You were in my town! I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves.🤗 btw…. The fire hydrants are not just for show. If there is a fire, they hook up to them to put it out🐝🤗❤️
I've enjoyed following you. I live in Nashville in the 12 South district you are standing on my street right next to the historical district which is the oldest building in Nashville.
Sweet Travis....
We do say jam. 🤷♀️
Jam is mashed fruit and jelly is made from the juice. Preserves covers both.
The "water thing" is a fire hydrant...it's what fire fighters hook their hoses to to put out fires.
Oh shoot, actually one mile from my home!
