  • Goldee's BBQ co-owner Nupohn Inthanousay, 29, said he was reluctant to introduce his Lao culture to Texas BBQ enthusiasts because he was not sure whether their reaction would be positive or not. After being convinced by his fellow owners, they decided to add in smoked Lao sausage and it was a popular hit with the community. Growing up in California I could never fit in with the Thai, Viet, or Filipinos bc of the same issues. Might be the stigma of colorism from back in the days of the refugee camps, my mom talks about this but we don’t experience that anymore. I definitely agree with your family, I had very few positive experiences with Korean people as well. Taking Korean in college for 2 years was one of the worst school experiences I’ve ever had because the Korean students were bullies. They called all of the SE Asian students jungle Asians. It was one of the very few times I’ve felt so much shame for being Lao.
