Pete's used to being on top of everything all the time, and in the rare cases where he isn't, still being able to cope and joke around, and find logic based solutions to problems to help the most people. But then this guy that he had respected and looked up to so much does so many horrible things from a reasonable anger, amplified by a symbol of his own genius, and every ounce of positivity disappears when Pete finally gets to that breaking point. Aside from the iconography of the spider suit and the tentacle arm design we all know, it would be very hard to see the early, fun quirkiness and attribute it to the same property as those final confrontations. To do both that well is difficult, so when it's done right, it's all the more immersive
