This is a "Winson" 7 1/4" Gauge Great Western Steam Locomotive. The regulator pipe was fractured so it has been impossible to perform a hydraulic test on the engine. This video shows in detail how I repaired and modified the arrangement slightly.... What a curious arrangement with the water feed directly above the regulator, and how it requires that diffusor plate. Wouldn't it be a better idea to have a pair of pipes inside the fitting that leads the water down and away from the regulator? I don't know how GRW dealt with it on the fullsize thing but this solution just feels strange allowing water to pour right into the regulator.

I know what they are, but I have never used them.
I have used helicoils on many occasions. They are very handy for various thread repairs, I highly recommend them. Note don’t buy cheaper alternatives use only genuine helicoil, the cheap ones just don’t work as well.
Keith, after watching David Richard's latest Old Steam Powered Machine Shop video, I have a question. Do you ever clean out the boiler firetubes, or is that more of a full-sized boiler thing? Sorry if you've covered that and I've forgotten. Interesting video, as always.
Yes, I use a small Flue brush ...... if you use Coal to fire the boiler, even in miniature you need to keep the flue tubes clean - it makes a big difference to how well the boiler steams.
Is that a "danger overhead live wires" sign on the front of the loco?

While I know you're not in the free advice hotline business, I can't help but ask:
What is your recommended approach to making the seal with piston valves that run in bronze sleeves? I've heard of people using viton O-rings but I am doubtful. The loco is superheated.

Taping through to the inside of the boiler is surely a problem? Lots of small bit of swarf in there is likely to find its way through the regulator? Am I missing something?
not a problem - the boiler has a blowdown valve anyway to clean it out.
So the regulator is simply supported by the dry pipe itself, hmm.
No it isn't .....it fits through the hole in the Brass baffle plate - I couldn't show that bit because my camera battery went flat ..... {:-(((
