- British four-piece Ride help define the 'shoegaze' sound in the '90s, alongside bands like their Creation Records label mates My Bloody Valentine. Following a 20-year sabbatical, Ride proclaimed they had “unfinished business” and returned in 2017 with Weather Diaries. Now the band are releasing their seventh album, Interplay.
Alongside his role as the band's vocalist and guitarist, Ride's Mark Gardener is also founder and owner of Oxford's OX4 Sound Studios, where he recorded and co-produced Interplay with Richie Kennedy. To mark the album's release, Gardener invited Future Music into the studio to talk about his mixing setup, his approach to recording and how his outlook on music has changed over the years.
Interplay is out 29 March via Wichita

Ridiculously good album, full of wonderful surprises. This band continues to surprise and delight.
I NEED TO KNOW how they got that sound on 'DREAMS BURN DOWN' on Nowhere. The really loud parts, I've always found that part sonically devastating when that 'D' chord kicks in
Really enjoyed that. Mark seems like a really genuine guy.
Met him in Oxford once, he was lovely. We were both just dads with our daughters. Really genuinely nice fella.
Brilliant that, album out Friday,Nice! I Remember first time i heard Unfamiliar on The Chart Show after work one Saturday. That Bass Line still remains one of the finest Bass Lines ever and Sennen is on the same 12". 👌
Today Forever EP. Unfamiliar, Sennen, Beneath and Today. Incredible EP
love ride and great to realise mark is such genuine guy so dedicated to his craft. a lifer for sure! thoroughly enjoyed this one
What a cool, humble, open and honest dude Mark is. Love his work 👍
This was great. Nowhere is still one of my favourite albums of all time. Seen them play live over the years but never heard him speak until this video! Great choice of band and interview. Looking forward to the new album.
Love the vibe that Mark radiates, comes across entirely passionate about what he does, genuinely inspirational.
What an interesting interview and man. Thanks
Love Ride, brilliant overview of the studio. Thanks for putting this out.
Amazing dude from an amazing band. Ride was my go to during lockdown and saved me in so many ways. Great insights and great interview.
Man, this and then Luke Slater, rad interviews! Going Blank Again has always been a fave bc it's got the massive guitars they're known for but then the synth work is also awesome throughout.
❤Honest, humble and enormously talented. What's not to like?
Cool interview - Better Album (Interplay) Boys come up trumps with yet another classic album.
That was great, really insightful.
Love a good sonic holiday
What a guy!
