Visorelle here, thanks for the reaction again! I'm not sure what the differences between the Octo Expansion and Final Fest versions of Fly Octo Fly, but they are technically different versions? Idk, lol. If you noticed the shift in the middle of the song where it changed completely, thats the Ebb & Flow part, which is actually a separate song by the same in-game band that Fly Octo Fly switches to during the last minute of the fight.
The singers in splatoon are not speaking/singing english or any other real language, they have their own made up language they sing in. And they do actually talk in game, in that language as well (though obviously we read a translation). The vocals for the first song was Callie and Marie, and the vocals for the second song was Pearl and Marina (Pearl was in the left ear, Marina was in the right ear. Pearl is a rapper for the most part, while Marina does the singing).
Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion does have a lot of songs that largely fit that branding, very vibed out vaporwave kind of thing. Fly Octo Fly is the final boss music for Octo Expansion, so thats why I requested it, since it was more exciting. #14 crush is on your request list, but that one also doesnt really fit the vibe, lol. #8 Regret is probably my favorite of the level themes, so Ill probably submit that one soon, since it fits.
FinalFest was the last Splatfest (regular in-game events that sees players fighting for one side or another, and whichever side has more victories wins). The winners of the FinalFest determined the storyline for Splatoon 3, which was really cool! It was Chaos vs Order. Chaos won, so the town of Splatoon 3 was ruled by an anarchist group in the middle of a desert!
I dont really see Splatoon as a party game, though it definitely looks it from the outside. Its a competitive 3rd person team-based shooter largely, and the single player modes are actually really good! The expansions, Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion and Splatoon 3's Side Order, are both exclusively single player experiences that are very, very well done.
Sorry for the text wall, I like splatoon, lol.

Splatoon marketing has definitely tended to portray the game in a bit of a surface-level way, it's completely reasonable to assume it's a colorful party game like a more elaborate Mario Party. However, the game actually puts a ton of emphasis on worldbuilding, insisting that the passage of time in Splatoon is synchronized to the real world so characters and locations age over time. There's a lot of lore both humorous and dark, but I think ultimately the game is really about self expression and embracing differences.

    WOOO SPLATOON
Anyways the one thing I'll point out is that the first song, Tidal Rush, has a LOT of references to other in-universe music. The two Squid Sisters each have their own solo MVs, and this track uses motifs from both. It's so chaotic because it's constantly switching between two very different melodic ideas, and towards the end mashing them together with counterpoint and such.

    • @Iphao
      @Iphao Před měsícem +13

More context: Tidal Rush plays during the second phase of the final boss. In the first phase, a brainwashed Callie sings a heavily remixed version of her solo song (Bomb Rush Blush). In the second phase, Marie breaks the brainwashing device and sings her own song (Tide Goes Out) to pull Callie back to the good side. That's why Callie's parts of Bomb Rush Blush that get mixed into Tidal Rush sound a lot less distorted and closer to the original than the first phase remix, because Callie is returning to her original self.

Tidal Rush is conceptually one of my favorite tracks in the Splatoon series. “Tide Goes Out” and “Bomb Rush Blush” were music videos released around the end of Splatoon 1’s update cycle. (These songs were unique because Callie and Marie usually release songs together as the “Squid Sisters.”) In the Splatoon 2 story campaign, Callie is kidnapped and brainwashed, and you fight her and the main antagonist DJ Octavio in the final boss. The first phase of the fight is a warped/twisted remix of Bomb Rush Blush, and the second phase plays Tidal Rush, which is a mashup of the two solo tracks, as Marie attempts to break through the mind control. The slower, flowing notes are Marie signing the melody of Tide Goes Out, and the more upbeat, chirpy vocals are Callie with the main line of Bomb Rush Blush.

The splatoon games have insane lore if you acutally take time to look into it, and while they do have a "story" mode in all 3, they are more like portal with the puzzles rather than a full story game. But the music is a key part of the game, a lot of the main characters are musicians so it's very drilled into the story as well.

I feel like Tidal Rush requires a lot of context to appreciate. Callie and Marie are cousins that make up the Squid Sisters, basically and idol duo. In Splatoon 2, Callie is kidnapped and brainwashed by DJ Octavio after he escapes prison. The player works with Marie to rescue her and take down Octavio. During the final battle, Callie and Marie basically have a musical duel singing their respective singles ("Tide Goes Out" and "Bomb Rush Blush") at each other while you battle Octavio. It's a very cool moment.

The last fight in the octo expansion is a trip alright, it’s basically a rogue AI bent on genociding all the inklings/octolings using a DNA primordial soup of 10,000 previous test subjects blended up together and fired out of a giant vaporwave statue (the first time anyone in the Splatoon universe has seen what a human looked like) while the main character (the latest test subject to succeed) covers the entire statue in ink to stop it absorbing sunlight and charging, the little snippet of footage from the end shows the bad ending where the statue fires off and destroys the city. The final fight comes in waves of 30 seconds and the beats of the song match each phase, with the last minute of the fight shifting into ebb & flow to represent the ‘now or never’ portion of regular online matches

There's a lot of different styles and genres of music in Splatoon, and they're all represented in-world by different bands. For what is supposed to be just a fun party shooter game, they went all out on the worldbuilding and lore for this series, and we as players even seem to have an impact on where the story goes for sequels. There's recurring events in the games called Splatfests, where players duke it out over opinions on what's best, usually simple stuff like do you prefer cats or dogs, etc. However, for the last Splatfest for the first game it was about Callie and Marie themselves, the presenters of these Splatfests and huge idols and popstars in the setting, and the girl who lost subsequently went missing in the sequel because the duo had a falling out.

Finally, Fly Octo Fly is here!
I love this song so much, I still use it as my rintone to this day XD. But man, at times like this, I wish you could have listened to the song in-game for yourself, because the story progression, the characters and the situation just add to the experience of the song that much more! I also had the opportunity to attend one of the Splatoon concert in Japan and when they started playing this song, everyone just went CRAZY the moment they heard the beginning jingles.
You might have expected a different vibe from Fly Octo Fly based on the Octo Expansion logo's 80s/90s aesthetics, but it's an exception. Most of the background music in Octo Expansion are in the Vaporwave style to give players the feel of being in a weird, otherworldly place, yet somehow familiar as they're going through the campaign, but Fly Octo Fly is more of an upbeat J-Pop and Electronic as it's played during the last boss fight to hype up the players.
The singer/voice actresses for the characters are also done by famous Japanese singers such as Itou Rina (Pearl) and Alice Peraltra (Marina) and had their voice synthesised to be gibberish on purpose:
    czcams.com/video/TxF3bMJpScI/video.html
Also, about "People don't buy Splatoon for the story." Very true right there, but man, once you got into the game, you really get invested in the story! Well, most of the fandom does, in any case. XD

Important and fun facts about Fly Octo Fly. The song is specifically designed to play during a boss fight on a 3 minute timer. Which is notable because 3 minutes is how long a Splatoon match is in the default mode, turf war. And during a match of turf war, when it hits 1 minute remaining, the song will switch to a song called "Now or Never" to signify that you have only a minute left and this is your last chance to affect the outcome of the game. So they mirror this in the final boss for Octo Expansion by having the song switch to a version of Ebb and Flow at 1 minute remaining. Ebb and Flow was a popular song in the game already by Off the Hook, the duo singing Fly Octo Fly. This is also why they were able to use Fly Octo Fly in the final fest, because the final fest was a turf war event (like all splatfests) and it already matched to 3 minutes perfectly.

The player characters and npcs do make squid/octo/other noises for dialog and stuff in the game, not just the songs. Personally I really love the sound of the vocals in splatoon songs, as far as I can tell it's all gibberish though some of it sounds more like japanese gibberish and some more like english gibberish or maybe something else.
Splatoon is a team-based online competitive game mostly, though I guess more on the casual side of things than many of those kinds of games just because it's nintendo running it. They do run tournaments and stuff. Somewhere in between something like fall guys and a traditional competitive shooter, but closer to the competitive shooter side, more so than you might expect. There are still plenty of ways to play it casually as well, and there's also a cooperative PvE mode called salmon run too.
Separate from the online there's a single-player story mode (in all 3 games), which is where both the songs in this video are from, one from the base game and one from the expansion story mode.

Tidal Rush is interesting because it's two separate songs (Tide Goes Out and Bomb Rush Blush) being sung by separate singers (the members of the Squid Sisters) in a way that's sort of clashing but still sounds good together. The reason is due to a mind control plot, in which Marie trying to get through to Callie while Callie is still being controlled by Octavio. Fly Octo Fly is a great track imo. The last minute of the track is lifted from a track that plays during the multiplayer sometimes, and which players likely were already familiar with before the DLC Fly Octo Fly appears in released, so when it kicked in, it was like a familiar friend coming to your aid at the conclusion of the level. The song appearing again in a special level in Final Fest (a multiplayer event as sort of a send-off to any new content being added to the game) felt like a really cool sendoff to the game, but also a missed opportunity that the song wasn't utilized in more multiplayer levels.
I think the only difference with the Final Fest version is the balance on the instruments and vocals is slightly different. The comments on the Final Fest's video also think it might be slightly faster, by like a second.
If I remember correctly, Tidal Rush is technically a mashup, so it sounds like two different songs competing with each other, being simultaneously performed by both the enemy you're fighting and your allies. I honestly think it would hit harder if it were preceded by the boss's music alone, as is the case in the context where it plays in game. On its own, Tidal Rush feels like an odd in-between between two different things; one might be able to pick up that there's some "traditional" Japanese singing-like vocals (like samurai era? I don't know Japanese history) with layers of this electronic sound pushing against it.

Some of the splatoon music, like tidal rush, is way more hype when you recognize the specific parts of other songs that are being drawn from/remixed along with the storytelling going into it. Fly Octo Fly does it too a bit too. The in-universe bands/idols have histories and make work that plays off their previous work.
Splatoon is a competitive third person shooter actually. It CAN feel like a party game when played casually but it also has a serious competitive scene at the same time (one of the least toxic and most diverse competitive scenes to boot).
Fun fact: those eyeballs sort of play off how there are stealth mechanics in the game.
As for what the game is about... uuuh... cute, colorful cephalopods, self expression, race wars, among other things
I really hope you react to more songs from Off The Hook (the idol pair that does Fly Octo Fly) every single song they have is fire and they have an hour's worth of songs.

Basically fly octo fly + ebb and flow plays during the last fight of the octo expansion vs that statue thing you saw. It mirrors the actual turf war battles because it lasts three minutes and you need to cover the entire statue as the whole thing is a solar panel in the sense that it’s charging itself using the sun in order to use that laser thing in it’s mouth.
Normally in the last minute of turf wars a song called now or never plays but here that’s replaced by ebb and flow.

A little info on splatoon as a whole.
Splatoon is actually the most competitive Nintendo game period. The world championships just happened and many, many tournaments happen. It’s also one of the biggest Nintendo franchises in Japan!
There are many bands, each with their individual lore, the 3 idol groups are widely different.
I’d recommend watching someone like Prochara, a competitive player, he talks about a lot of the major things in the game.
It is a huge, competitive 3rd person shooter that is intense, fun, wild, and slaps harder than it ever needs too!
Each band sounds different, yes they do have actual voice actors for the songs, and no they aren’t singing real words! It was an original ip from the end of the wii u, and they do talk like that at all times.

The Splatoon series is often seen "just" as the new child of Nintendo, but the truth is, it now stands proudly side by side with Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Co.
It has proven to be a big big staple franchise for Nintendo over the years and it deserves the respect :D
The game announcement and the series as a whole came out of nowhere and inkstantly began rising up peoples interests over one way or another.
It is a competetive shooter at heart, but the campaign and DLCs that exist since Splatoon2 are definetly selling points too for many many people^-^
The game isn't serious for the most part and very happy go lucky silly about the circumstances of the told stories, but the lore reaches deep deep oceans and the world takes itself very seriously.
You can look at it as this "haha funny squid game" (and that's totally fine), but if you let yourself into this world, you might find a path of self reflection, self expression, how to treat the world, how to treat others and many other topics :)
Since self expression is a big deal, it coincidently has become a safe space for a lot of pride people too which is a fun side effect I wanted to mention^^
Splatoon is a vibe check. It's fine to not play it but if you actively hate it, I will think of you as somewhat close minded :P
Anyways, can't wait for Into the Light, #14 Crush, #8 Regret, Shooting Starfish, New World Order and whatever else might be requested. Maybe one of the lyric videos, the ingame performance videos or straight up a whole concert.
There is still sooo much variety to hear in the Splatunes :3

Splatoon has a lot of lore and depth for sure. And it’s a competitive shooter as well, not just a party game! There’s actually a tournament going on this weekend. It’s definitely a cultural movement in its own right even if it doesn’t appear like it from the outside.
Also it’s cool to see you pick up on the logo for Octo Expansion, this was DLC that added a second story mode and let you play as the octopus characters. They went heavy on the use of the number 8 for that reason, and the DLC is 80’s themed.

  • @Stephen-Fox

Bigger deal outside of America - Absolutely huge in Japan. Splatoon 3 - at the time - had the biggest initial three days in Japan in terms of sales of any Switch game. Also Nintendo kind of got into the Virtual Idol scene due to promoting Splatoon via live hologram concerts at conventions which always wind up with a full audience (Not sure how the size of them compare to other V-Idol concerts)?
Splatoon is an original IP that came out of nowhere, though the development is actually unusually well documented for a game from a major studio - Originally coming out of a series of prototypes a group of developers at Nintendo were working on to see what would come out, they built the 'tofu' prototype (so named because the test models for were grey rectangles that resembled tofu), which had the core mechanics of shooting ink in your own colour , and reloading by shrinking down into your own ink. They realized they had something, and designed... A game about rabbits around that (after going through a 'people with capes' stage). And then proceeded to not be able to sell anyone on the idea that since it's a battle over territory it should be rabbits so eventually went with shapeshifting squids which made a lot more sense to everyone outside of the development team since squids actually are connected to ink and swimming, and in the past 9 years has become one of Nintendo's bigger IPs.
Most of the VA's the series uses are singers rather than professional VAs, who are then given nonsense lyrics to sing (and nonsense sentences in the same fictional language to say)

The first song is special in that it's a sort of dueling between two songs, the singers both singing their signature singles against each other. This is in phase 2 of the Splat2 final boss, after this shifting into both singers coming together to sing Spicy Calamari Inkantation for the final phase. The second song is from the final boss of the Splat2 DLC Octo Expansion. You're in a battle to save the world, it's complicated don't worry about it. The fight is a timed event, shifting during the last minute into a sort of "final push" phase which is the reason for the sudden shift there.

Amazing video, as per usual! Just wanted to drop in a little bit of extra information on "Fly Octo Fly/Ebb and Flow." The reason for the sudden shift of the song, as well as its length, is because it fits in with the gameplay of when it happens.
See, in the main Splatoon multiplayer mode, Turf War, matches last for three minutes, where players have to cover as much of the map in their colored ink to outdo the other team. The first two minutes of a match use tracks from the many in-game bands, but the last minute always plays a song called "Now or Never!". It's been like this in all three games and there are several different versions of it; some are by the in-game bands, while others are by the idol characters and those are saved for the in-game events called "Splatfests", where people vote on a favorite team and try to win for the side they represent.
The reason why "Fly Octo Fly/Ebb and Flow" shifts in that way is because the final boss of the Octo Expansion DLC actually plays out like a Turf War, where you only have three minutes to cover the boss in ink or the world ends. So, "Ebb and Flow", which plays for the last, decisive minute, not only acts as this moment's version of "Now or Never!", but its also the main theme associated with the idol duo singing at this moment, Pearl and Marina! It's actually it's own, full piece that sounds a bit different from how it does here, so it could also be good to listen to in a future video, as well as the "Now or Never!" tracks!
The reason why you heard the song twice because it was was also used for the Final Fest event, which was the final Splatfest done for Splatoon 2!

Nasty magisty is a very good octo expansion track by off the hook that brings some great energy especially for characterising the lead vocalist Pearl being a very in your face and confident inkling! Btw the reason why i talk like these are real people and real bands is because for multiple years on end my favorite band in the world was ABXY (also know as chirpy chips plz give them a listen) which is a band IN SPLATOON so this setting has been my second life and world to live in from my early teens to my early adulthood with my age exactly matching up with the age of the main protagonist from the first game (time passes at the same rate both in game and irl) making me connect with this game even more.
The world building of the Splatoon universe is by far one of the most impressive chunks of world building, up there with avatar the last Airbender and rain world and i say this as someone who has been contracted to write world books for IP before. I deeply recommend diving into the vast and expansive world of Splatoon with one of the many community made video essays autistically rambling about the world, the characters, the culture, and the impact Splatoon has had on us and the way we appreciate art.

So Jesse, Splatoon lore goes unnecessarily hard, people have probably told you this before but it's a third person shooter where you shoot ink and is a very competitive game unironically, the clothes you wear can have different buffs and effects, the weapons have a wide variety of stats, playstyles, sub weapon and special weapon loadouts etc.
The game is Nintendo's LARGEST success in terms of new IPs in the last ~10-20 years or so because it really hits both casual and hardcore markets well due to it's actually interesting story set within a post apocalyptic earth where sea life evolved to become humanoid and the lore is SURPRISINGLY deep ranging from the silly (A cat called Judd who judges the match outcomes and was brought back to life or freed from ice or something and used to be a human's pet) to the serious (The Octo-expansion DLC involves an artificial life-form trying to wipe out the new society on the planet and return things to naturality because it was made by an insane human scientist and recently unearthed or something).
I'm kind of rambling but Splatoon really IS huge, artists love making OCs, people love all of the in game bands, there are actual legitimately Nintendo organised splatoon concerts that use the same hologram tech as the vocaloid (Hatsune Miku etc.) concerts, the game has an alive competitive scene etc.
TL;DR Splatoon is a surprisingly deep franchise with a LOT of appeal for pretty much every corner of the market it needs to hit, is a very skill-based game in competitive settings, has an interesting story and deeper lore than you'd think and has enough of a following for hologram concerts for almost every year since splatoon 1's release
EDIT: OH YEAH AND IT'S ALSO POPULAR ENOUGH TO HAVE AN OFFICIAL NINTENDO LICENSED MANGA SERIES WHICH ONLY ZELDA, KIRBY, POKEMON AND MARIO CAN CLAIM (If i'm not missing one) and the player protagonists are recruited into the "squidbeak splatoons" (like platoon) by callie, marie and cap'n cuttlefish who are all also soldiers effectively, the main plots tend to be about stopping octarian forces from invading Inkling society, in splatoon 1 Octolings were the octarian inkling equivalents (octopus and squid humanoids respectively which is what most characters are) but then part of the octo-expansion dlc story involves Octolings integrating into inkling society and being accepted (Marina is octoling and hid it from everyone including her bandmate pearl - who actually knew the whole time - because she didn't want to be subjected to racism, i'm not even joking).
    TL;DR 2
This game series is significantly deeper than one would expect at a glance and actually has some very serious undertones beneath the kid friendly style of colourful sights and very upbeat and hyperactive music

since you're unsure about splatoon's genre: they're shooter games. it's just that the objective is generally not killing your opponents, it's objectives often related to painting the floor, like a mode where you have to fight for who can cover the most ground in the level, or one where you have to protect an area of your colour. of course, defeating your opponents helps with this.
on the topic of modes the game had, splatoon also has salmon run, which is basically a wave based zombie mode. the reason I bring it up is because the music in this mode is extremely unique and completely incomprehensible. I really hope someone requests salmon run music, it'd be a unique experience for you, I think.

When it comes to language of Splatoon. It's basically supposed to sound like someone speaking foreign language mouth halfway underwater and half above the water. The language in splatoon doesn't have consistency, some characters speak in a made up language based on a specific language and other characters speak on a made up language based on a different language. There's even around 3 different typefaces and none of them are consistent.
The thing that Splatoon does is a another japanese stable. The canon is built outside the game. A lot of what we know about splatoon is basically just what a "researcher" (someone in dev team) "finds out" about the series and posts it on twitter. A lot of Japanese games does this thing, where you have just the game and then you learn about the manga that just happens to exist. Yes, Splatoon does have a manga. Does it suck, absolutely, but I found it a fun read (at least the splatoon 3 series is the least tedious).

Splatoon has to be one of the worst games in terms of marketing, because it's so deep. Whether it's its lore or its story. Everything about this series feels “alive”. And its gameplay is so good that if Nintendo would stop acting like idiots, it could easily compete with the big esports games. The game is ultra-dynamic, fluid, hard to master and has so much gameplay depth in both PvP (anarchy/X) and PvE (salmon run) modes.
But no, Nintendo is in turf war mode (the least interesting mode), you're kid now you're a squid now, that makes me sad.
