As the teacher said there's no real number you can square to get -3. But complex numbers can be used to solve for the square root of negative numbers. The solutions for x^2 = -3 would be x = i√3 and x = -i√3.

I took intro algbra in a community college in 1994 teacher says don't ask her any question. and every one will fail this class. then I took math class in 2011. I drop it they time you on your home work had answer each question in 2min. if you go over 2min they mark it wrong.
Its just a habit I picked up long ago. Instead of circling the entire answer, I put a half bracket to indicate the answer instead. Just the way I do things - I know it can look a bit weird!
