Baard said the reason for the china placement was something along the lines of to avoid over-playing it / not be too tempted to play it too much.

There are actually a few videos out there where Baard addresses the way he holds his drumsticks. In fact, he said it gives him more dynamic freedom. For the average person, it's as you said, a "no-no". However, when Baard plays the way he does, it's hard to argue the way he holds his sticks is not a great idea. Which is just another way of saying, don't try to fix something that works! Baard, at least in my opinion, is probably one of the greatest living drummers. I might even go as far as to say THE best living drummer but that might be me getting carried away. :P In any case, he's phenomenal. Loved the reaction. Thanks Jason!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm assuming he holds his sticks in the same manner Mike Portnoy does to increase power on the back beat but i'll check out the videos of this interview. I have done a new Baard reaction this week so please check that out.

if you ever get around to doing another Leprous song, I would recommend the song Moon from Baard on his channel. it's genuinely one of the best drumming videos in my opinion.

Watched this video on your recommendation. The drumming was great but I think this song is better. And the camera work on that video was awful. Reminded me of the Oceans Ate Alaska Escapist video. Camera man just doing way to much thinking he is being artistic.

The bass drum setup is not by accident. Having it that loose means resonance almost goes away, and it gives far less bounce allowing for that real dig in of the head. The dig in gives a very hard attack. So all in all you end up with a very dry bass drum sound with a steep attack. It's pretty hard to play with.
Basically you get a thud instead of a boing.

I really recommend you trying out using your middle finger as fulcrum when playing. It really makes you smoother when you are playing busy dynamic notes. Not ideal for those who beat the drums like they owe you money though.

Baard rhymes with "bored" as mentioned earlier, also it is Leprous to rhyme with "Leprosy" without the "y" as in the disease, no worries! :-)
