I wanted to make a comment about Tal & Fischer. When Tal was dying in a hospital, I believe Fischer was the only Grandmaster to visit him. I don't know if Tal had a difficult personality or was unpopular among the chess players at that time which would have put them off about visiting him at the hospital. Plus Fischer is always made out to be imbalanced, lacking in social graces, highly willful etc. Nevertheless, at least Fischer had the compassion and sensitivity to visit Tal in the hospital just before he passed away and I think that speaks volumes about the comradeship and admiration Fischer must have felt toward Tal and probably Tal felt toward Fischer as well. For even though they did battle with each other on the chess board, there must have been some meaningful emotional bond between them because of their mutual love for the game of chess and because of the admiration and respect they had for each other.

The story you have is true but Tal wasn't on his deathbed, far from it. It was during the Curacao Candidates in 1962, Tal was unwell but still played but if you see his games, he lost them in uncharacteristic fashion. He left the tournament halfway.
Fischer visited him and has always professed an admiration of the great Tal, and you should read his notes on his first win against Tal from My 60 Memorable Games.

What makes Fischer or Kasparov the greatest chess player of all time? Maybe their record of play since childhood and their number of winning including the fact that both are prodigies. For me Tal is the greatest player of all time. He became also a chess world champion for a short time and beaten Fischer many times in a brilliant winning attack. Fischer can not win always against Tal and the same with later but Tal is always the better player exhibiting extraordinary winning moves against; and Tal was not a chess prodigy yet he was able to equal or better in play than those prodigies. to me that makes him extra-ordinary.

    • @franvc8368
      @franvc8368 Před 9 lety +8

I´ll tell you what makes Fischer the greatest player of all time. First of all, he surpassed himself permanently. He had no level limits. Tal's victories over Fischer only were in 1959, with Tal at his peak and Bobby being only 16. After that, he never beat him again. Same situations happened against Petrosian, Spassky, etc. Not to mention that he had the entire Soviet Union against him, with labs analyzing his games and trying to defeat him. But Fischer beat them all singlehandedly.
Secondly, he refuted the King's gambit, one of the most popular openings in the XIX century writing an excellent article. Think that just for a moment. The whole world thought that opening was great until he showed they were wrong. He did the same thing with the sicilian dragon.
Some minor facts as well, youngest GM of his time, rating record of 2785 points only surpassed decades later, defeated both larsen and taimanov with a crushing 6-0 at the 1971 candidates tournament, etc, etc, etc.
If this facts doesn't seem enough for you, then here's another one. the 1972 championship was the most important event of the year only because of him. he made chess popular in the seventies. chess isn't popular nowadays, Since kasparov's retirement almost nobody cares about it compared with football, basketball, boxing.

"greatest" or "best of all time" are loaded phrases. It's all comparative and subjective, despite ELO ratings.
IMHO, Paul Morphy was the "greatest" because he was the first person to understand the modern game. He was also an artist on the board. Fischer was the "greatest" because he has probably climbed more chess-trees than anyone this side of "Big Blue". Tal was the "greatest: because his attacking style influenced many players and brought a new dimension to chess. Capablanca was the "greatest" because...
    It goes on.

Fischer did something no modern master is ever likely to match. He won 20 consecutive games against GM's and a few IM's. 14 of his wins in this streak came off like this: Fischer vs Timanov, Candidates Quarter Finals Match 1971 6-0; Fischer vs Larsen Semi-Finals Candidates 1971 6-0; Fischer vs Petrosian Candidates Finals, won the first 2 games of their candidates final match, then went on to crush Petrosian 6.5 - 2.5. In this era of draw first, and play for the win only if their opponent blunders, is a far cry from the "take no prisoners" attitude of Fischer. Fischer played for the win with the black pieces against all comers instead of playing to equalize and draw with the black side.

It should be noted that Bobby was only 16 years old when this game was played and still far from his peak strength. In 1972 , when he was 29 years old , he was 125 rating points ahead of the number two player in the world on the FIDE rating list.

Thanks, Mato, for another great year of instructive videos.
Black's position looks like utter crap going into the middle game... an amazing result.
p.s. Jacques Mieses was the greatest player of all time!

Thanks Mato for taking the time to make these videos. My 9 yr old son and I really enjoy the "pause the video" option for a chance to find the best move. My son is currently ranked 1300 USCF and we think you deserve some credit so we thank you very much. We also like your sense of humor. He really laughed loud when you moved the black pawn back to take the white pawn. When we get together to see your videos, we call it "Mato Time". We wish you a great 2014.
    God Bless You.

-What is the move? *dramatic silence*
*confident voice* - the move is pawn takes pawn ... on a4....
    ....
    ...
Just kidding, this is an illegal move - pawns can't go backwards.
    I laughed so much!!!! :D
