      +I stand with WADA No. It was a marketing choice, nothing to do with any network. They were trying to position the show as a story about unconventional Jewish families and complicated relationships (which it is) not another "gay musical" (which it also is). The result was that some people bought tickets, thinking they were going to see a light-hearted musical comedy about Jewish families on the Upper West Side, and ended up watching a story about gay men dying of Aids and families being torn apart. The original Broadway production ran for a year, and heavily discounted tickets were available for the whole run.

Yuck! I understand the appeal of joining Mensa for folks who didn't go to college and/or who live in remote areas (and want the network for friendship and/or dating) and/or who are worried about being underestimated (some fashion models join, hoping people will stop assuming they are mentally shallow), but Jon is a California-based Stanford grad. This musical was quite, how do you say...daring, for the time that it was put on Broadway, the main story follows two sets of gay couples, living in the 70s, affairs and cheating, a kid in the middle of it, the whole shabang! Still their are a few aspects that are still relatively safe and traditional as one would put it but still, how was this on Broadway in the 90s? (I'm not complaining, I love Falsettos so much, I'm just curious:) )

      @thatoneannoyingsoprano8066 Před 5 lety +205

      this is an industry that was still reeling from the mass death of many in their community. most people don’t talk about it but after the golden age of theater in the 1960’s, the 70’s saw the area filled with seediness. then the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s came around. i can only make the assumption that everyone in the audience here lost someone due to the crisis. there a book called “razzle dazzle” that explains this a lot better than i could.
      but after you learn about this, a lot of shows set in the 70’s begin to make more sense.

It shows that less is more, just look at the simple set and props....no dry ice, helicopters, etc.. Just incredible lyrics, music, and the amazing use of character to tell a story. Chip Zien's Marvin is freaking brilliant. If you can find clips of the original production please do, because just seeing his performance is worth it. He has this manic energy that's unmatched. It truly feels like Mendel was written with him in mind.

    I remember when A Chorus Line came out. I was 15. It was the first time on Broadway that a gay character discussed his life. It was awesome. It’s still my favorite musical and always will be.
