Woodland Overnight Camp. Tarp and Bivvy. Campfire Pizza Cooked in a Swedish Army Mess Kit.

- In this video, I head off to a favourite local permission woodland for an overnight tarp and bivvy camp.
Having set up my shelter, I gather firewood and set about making a small fire for cooking - pizzas are on the menu, cooked in my Swedish Army M40 cook set, using it as an oven over the camp fire.
A couple of nice beers and some peaceful time beside the fire and it is soon time to wriggle into my bivvy bag and catch some Zzzs.
Morning brings another warm and sunny day, coffee and pancakes before packing away and extinguishing my camp fire.
I hope you enjoy the video,
Thanks for watching.

Hi Simon, you mentioned about fire safety I'll give you a true example of a complete accident which occurred some years ago. During a walk with a colleague I noticed that someone had made a fire due to the scaring of the ground you could see that the area of the fire had been well doused with water. The actual fire scaring seemed to be quite a few days old because new growth of plants was coming through, my colleague and I stopped for a drink and I happened to ask him, "can you smell something burning" he replied "yes" we looked around and found a slight amount of smoke coming from the grass I felt the ground which seemed to be a bit warm which seemed unusual because we hadn't had much sunshine for a few weeks, we dug down to about a foot deep and found the ground smoldering we poured our water onto the area which more ore less turned to steam immediately so we informed the fire brigade they arrived quite quickly, the used a thermal imaging device and found the heat source covered around 100 m2. For 4 plus days 24hrs a day they fitted static pumps in order to put out the underground fire eventually the ground collapsed and they could get to the source of the fire and put it out. A fire man said if anyone would have walked across this particular area the ground could have given away and they would have been killed, you see, the upper surface of soil and grass, the soil had baked hard & acted like a lid and the peat underneath just smolderd away thus leaving a large cavity underground. So your advice on fire safety is sound, care must be taken.
Blimey, what a way to go that would be. Let's all be careful.
What a story! But be careful?
I don't see how to avoid that by being careful other then just not having a fire on the ground... I would always use a firebox or some other container that keeps it off the ground...
Fantastic story and I hope all that watch this video read what you wrote.... It just ain't worth it in this weather or on peaty ground
@@lodewijkbergkotte260 That's why the universe gave us rocks and stones! A well lined fire pit may not be able to ensure 100% that a well maintained fire won't spread, but it will certainly help. It would also be good to soak the ground, before lining the pit. Thoroughly soak the ground! Even after lining the pit, the rocks will transfer heat, after all. Fortunately, they don't transfer open flame. Stay safe out there!!
Sadly, such horrific deaths have occurred. Searching "coal seam fires" online will quickly reveal just how devastatingly common underground fires are across the world's coal-mining regions. One of the more infamous examples, which forced the abandonment of Centralia, Pennsylvania, has been burning since 1962. Peat deposits are, of course, on their way to becoming coal if someone doesn't ignite them first. Peat just needs to be more deeply buried and subjected to pressure over geological time scales.
We love that your kit contains items that you’ve used for years upon years. You’re not a reviewer of the latest corporate phase. Thank you. However, if you’d like, you could sell a million of those folding leg tables. Pizza anyone? Skillet
Lol i always get excited when i see the notification that simon uploaded another vid and the moment it starts, i feel relaxed and joy comes in. Thank you simon❤️
Same
Likewise
Ditto from my end too!
Same here dudes, and exactly what i thought today the second the video started :) I just relax and smile :)
I've been making naan bread pizzas since I was a teen. They make a great base for a pizza. My mum was a catering teacher at the time and stole my idea to teach in school as a quick pizza method. So it gets two thumbs up from me!
Pita bread works well too
@@rowendraper6828….and Tortillas as well 😂
Simon .... you have such a calming presentation and demeanor. One of the the best outdoor channels on You Tube. Cheers mate ... 🍺
You can use tortilla wraps as a sort of pizza/calzone. They work better as a calzone, fold them over with cheese etc inside, then cook like you would do a pizza, or dry fry them in a pan.
Good call!! 😋
Simple, yet so restoring to the soul. Reminds me to head out for an over-nighter just to clear my head. Thanks Simon.
Your filming and editing are great, love the flow. I giggled a little when you put on a long sleeve in the evening, here in South Texas August it can be 80 to 90 at night. Your Island nation has many charms as well as a fascination of being one of my ancestral places. Be well Simon Thanks for sharing.
I dunno what velcro keeps that hat on but I want me some! 🤣🤣
That was fun Simon. Sorry to hear about the back; take heed it's warning and look after it. This getting older lark can get harsh here and there. Certainly was not like this in the brochure! 😉Be well.😊
Sleeping on the ground is harder for me now than it was 40 years ago. I was recently pleasantly surprised by how much more comfortable a hammock can be.
Can of Pillsbury biscuits roll out wonderfully
1.6k views in first hour! I'm not the only one to sit in wait every day then 😁
I'm in hospital at the moment and this video is perfectly timed to help get me through the boredom!
I hope you recover soon! 👍👍
As a 76 yr old man, the only camping we have done is in the nineties at Glasto, brilliant times. Your vids of your adventures are great to watch and therapeutic value must
high. Thank you Simon...
Ahhh Simon, you are by far my favourite in this genre. I really enjoy your upbeat attitude, even when things are not going well you manage to see the bright side. Always a breath of fresh air. Thanks for another wonderful video.
Lovely to see you having a refreshing break in the woods. Kudos for carrying in that jerry can of water and making sure your fire is totally out. Great message too about being careful. Very responsible example to others!
I don't think this would be a proper Simon A Bloke In The Woods video without a good dollop of hot sauce! Hope you're enjoying summer 🙂
😲 Pancakes on a cast iron pan and no sticking? What sorcery is this? LOL Well done Si, I am very impressed with your skills 👍
It's quite simple. Just never wash your pan. I always just add a glug of oil and wipe it clean.
@@jonfisher9214 that explain why , lol , always see people wash with just water , no way it degrease the pan
Good show. You and Andy always do a great job in helping so many people in what you do. Trust me, it helps to learn as much as you can in this day and time. Just never know when the skills you teach us will be needed to live on. Thank you sir.
Yes I feel you, we aren't spring chickens anymore... Getting up hurts, bending down hurts, sleeping wrong hurts lol... I guess being in our 40's it is what it is unfortunately 😔 👍
@richard outdoors spying overhead? 🤣✈️
One of my old favorites; pizza and beer. Even better being outdoors.
Why is it always when I see one making pizza in a stainless steel Swedish Army Mess Kit, now everyone doing that. Amazing...
I saw a Dutch history hunter CZcamsr make pizzas in his about 6 or 7 years ago, wanted to try it since then, it’s not a new concept.
@@simonablokeinthewoods Dave Canterbury just did a video making one in the new Swedish mess kit, just seams like there popping up all the time, I think maybe youtube sending them my way after watching one video...
Nice little cheeky camp!..those pizzas look so delicious! Well done Simon 😀
Your not old, you are still a young fella...
You blokes have the best twigs over there in the UK
Great video Simon! I really love your music selections for all of your videos. Good stuff! Cheers!
Here in the US I like to use English muffins. Kids love to make their own. Metal sandwich makers over the fire make good pizzas too. Like your idea too!
We do that here in Australia too, also Lebanese flat bread works well 😊
Yup, still like to watch Simon eat!
Great video! Loved the music you chose for the beginning of the video. It set a beautiful mellow mood. Thank you for talking about fire safety. Here in the States we’ve had several devastating fires because of careless campers. It’s such a shame not only to lose the forest but also the personal property that has been burned. I really like how you end your camping videos by making every effort to leave no trace! You set a great example!!
Thanks Simon for going out camping and sharing it with us. Bloody love watching your channel. Very much looking forward to your Scandinavia trip with that Kentish Cheffing Chap hope all goes well and no one gets sick this time. Keep up the good work. Hopefully the Landy keeps going for another few years before needing anything else major. Please get yourself a long handled spork, I saw your spoon a few years back and thought a spork would be better. Not looked back.
Pepperoni Spoon, brilliant.
Haha - thanks Adam! 😁
@@simonablokeinthewoods After years of repairing LR gearbox’s a spork was always handy!😁

I get the impression that you wouldn't suffer in any way if you became homeless ....in fact ,you'd probably live better than I do at home .inspiring .
Thanks .
These pesky aches and pains seem to plague us as we get older!!!! Another great video Simon, Thank you x
Nice hanging out with you Simon. Your style, filming and conversing, is always so personable. Enjoy!
Great adventure Simon- Thank you. ! I also was rolling on my floor after catching You and Kent Survivals "Farts" 😂😂😂😂
Ooo la la…158k! Amazing brother. A lot of hard work to get there. Congrats. D😎🇺🇸
Hi Simon, I always look forward to your videos; I find them refreshing. I like the natural setup you used for your camp, especially by the fallen tree; which served many purposes. I like the pizzas, great idea. I like your responsibility in working with fire and keeping everything safe. Thanks for sharing and Rich Blessings.
Nice one Simon. Old age dosnt come cheap🤣🤣
😂😂
Absolute bliss matey! My mate makes those naan pizzas a lot, his kids love em. Great to see you preach fire safety too, I've seen some stupidity on my travels lately. Boils my blood. .. anyway, thanks for taking us on your adventure, hope the wheels are ok now?
Brilliant
I used to be a pizza chef for a few years and I know your not making your own pizza based in this video but if you do you could try folding your base over and making a pizza pasty, you can put anything you want in them and they don’t make much mess 👍
Thanks for taking us along !
Lovely even.
Sorry to see your knife was pinched!
When going to bed he takes off his boots, puts his knife in one of them. When he gets up in the morning he is able to don both boots without encountering the knife placed there the night before!
The only conclusion - knife bandits visited in the night!
Another great video Simon - those pizzas look delicious!
Thanks for the video
loving this video mate...thank you
Thanks for another great camping video Simon- food for the soul! Time for me to get out with friends and enjoy the outdoors respectfully. Cheers!
Very good.
great advice and video.
Thanks for your time
Very relaxing it was! Thanks Simon
THANK YOU SIMON FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Looks fun and relaxing.!!
Wonderful as always and thank you very much for sharing 🙏
As someone who is getting older myself, I would suggest trying some basic stretching or yoga positions to help your back. Back pain is nothing to mess with. Now, I want to go make some naan bread pizzas!
Naan breads make a superb pizza base. We have used them for years.
Cozy and relaxing to watch 👌😃👍
My mouth is watering watching this!!
Thank you , Simon .

Great video, Simon! I expect I won't be the only one pondering pizza for dinner soon :) Can recommend Greek flatbreads for pizza bases too, they're tasty and make fab pizzas. Cheers!
