My Mum soaked bread or a few hours, squeezed out excess liquid then added a tub of mixed spice, suet, sugar and mixed fruit. No measuring and it was always so, so yummy. But, I’ll give this recipe a go. It looks so good and your portions were certainly generous.

My granny did the same, soaked the bread in water to soften but then squeezed it out until 'dry'. Then suet, mixed spice, mixed fruit, 1 egg and sugar. She didn't measure either as she'd been making it for ever. And then cooked for 1.5hrs - I did get her to write an approximation of the recipe down but haven't tried it yet!

One of my grandmothers used to make a savory bread pudding. Basically, start with a bread dressing -- onions, celery, mushrooms, herbs like sage and winter savory -- put it in a pan, add an egg and milk custard mix, and bake. Oddly, this was often a breakfast item: Gran would let it sit in the refrigerator overnight and bake it in the morning, where we had it with fried ham and scrambled eggs.

I also when I cook sausages, I fry an onion add it to the sausages and put a couple of spoons of marmalade on the mix just before the end of cooking which gives the sausages a beautiful stickiness.

I can't wait to try this one! I have read about things like this for decades, as I like a lot of UK authors. Imagine being in the US in the 1960s & 70s and reading a stodgy pudding and trying to understand what that is with no internet to help you! I've tried so many things that I know from reading but have never had the chance to try them until I found this channel. You have made many things that the name was familiar but I had no idea what it was exactly. Good job 👍

@TheRenaissanceman65 You know, of course, that I grew up in the appalachian mountains and we only had a small public library for the entire county. It was located in the county seat (that would be the largest town in the county) Anyway, our library had an abundance of UK mystery/crime/thiller authors! I was surrounded by the UK in that tiny mountain community so I was always trying to figure out the difference between what we called the same item. Much, much easier today, that's for sure! No UK cookbooks. Are you well, Renaissanceman? I haven't seen you in a while.

Hello Sheryl, great Chanel and video’s, thanks for passing on your tips and meals. I just wanted to write in to say that I found that tearing up the scrap bread for the Bread Pudding, I found that some of the processed bread you buy today remained a soggy lump, cooked and all that but not like when we use old fashioned bakers bread. So this time I liquidised the bread and have found that all the ingredients seem to blend together much better, takes a bit longer but in a food processor a couple of minutes that’s all. The result is a nice smooth pudding and no lumps. Thanks again for all you ideas and tips 👍 . Bob Oxfordshire South of England …

Do you have a recipe for the custard? I normally use heavy cream on top of mine because we don’t have ready-made custard in the states. Which is so sad! I lived in Scotland years ago and was spoiled with all the yummy food! 😉🥰

You can find ready made custard, Devon custard in tins at World Market or sometimes in the international section of the grocery store. Grocery store Giant here in the Washington DC area usually carries it.
