Freeman finally meets up with Alyx, and the two of them sets off to find Barney, for a coordinated push onto the Citadel. However, a Combine generator must first be disabled, leading to an intense firefight between Gordon and the Overwatch soldiers in the middle of an abandoned plaza.

Notes:
- If I recall correctly, if the player sticks around the plaza even after the gates have been opened by Alyx, the Combine will keep spawning in
- The canal vista seen at 7:35 (with the THT signage) first appeared in the E3 2003 video. In that build, a Strider attacks Gordon after emerging from underneath the sign (20:50 in this video: • Half Life 2 Tech Demo ... )

Trivia:
- The song that plays at 9:37 is called "Triple Entanglement", and also played in HL1 during the beginning of On a Rail as "Sirens in the Distance"
- The series of pipe flanges at 13:49 is said to be a reference to Super Mario Bros, because you can jump off the pipe and "Goomba-stomp" the headcrab, as seen at 13:51

Man, that plaza battle with the improved MMod was KILLER. Literally took me over an hour.
Yeah, even this section took me a while. Once the Elites show up it's almost impossible to effectively watch both gates and they just flood right in.

I had to use quicksaves so much, and loaded back saves over and over again. Without the Tau Cannon, it would literally be impossible.

I swear 90% of the time, when an NPC bumps into Freeman he's in a really awkward location.

14:42 - Always loved this part! The idea behind the whole level design, lighting and the vertical combat, plus, the de-facto first encounter with the Combine Elite, which you can't escape is such a treat to watch, let alone play :)

No problem! I'm glad you appreciate the story and details too - so many players would just run around and goof off (which is also perfectly fine, but I try to do something a bit different).

Thanks! I think the energy ball does tend to home towards enemies when they're tightly packed like that, but I can be wrong.

i like to think the ManHacks at 9:48 were a few left when the underground was being flooded by them at Route Kanal
That's kind of disturbing in a cool way - just the thought that they've been deployed since Route Kanal and just idled aimlessly until Freeman shows up
I feel like I've mastered every part of this game except that plaza fight. Seems like if you miss one of the soldiers before another group comes from the other direction you're in deep shit. At this point I think I have about a 50-50 shot of not dying on hard mode:/
Yeah, the plaza fight is definitely one of, of not the hardest battles in the game.

13:51 ... If we just could do that every time, we would've already won the war against the combine. And the entire world would be a 4 instead a 2-3 in the "living on earth" score made by russel.

Would be cool if you can more make videos like the ones you made about Black Mesa We've Got Hostile topside battle and Questionable Ethics lobby battles videos. Maybe for not only Black Mesa but for the original Half Life and Half Life 2 and its episodes too!(I probably missed it if you actually did make some)
I did make some, and recently just uploaded one for Black Mesa. I was planning on doing some scenes from the HL2 games (Vortal Combat, final strider battle of EP2) but with Alyx around the corner, I might have to postpone those plans until after I finish the new game. I think I'll be finishing up this HL2 playthrough just before Alyx comes out, so unfortunately I won't really have time to do scenes :/

Poison zombies would bother me when I first played, but they didnt compare to Fast Zombies, which scared the crap out of me.
