We will remember you Jackson C Frank! You had a tough and unlucky life but left some great pieces of music! Thanks to my dearest Laura Marling your music and life story touched my heart and will never leave it!
Sorry cannot see or hear anything to make me think of Nick Drake. Her guitar playing is nothing like his and neither her voice nor delivery resemble his. It is what it is, nothing more.
@frozenfood1 I had similar thoughts when I first heard it, but she brings something special to it. Frank's is obviously very melancholic yet Laura Marling give it a particular sedate and wistful feeling, true to the original I think. She doesn't wank it up the wall like you might expect a lot of modern artists to do also.
Song of the day 02-09-2016: Bring it on home to blue ribbon, In the halcyon element booming its cobaltic blue at the strings of red that flow from a lone-octopus heart; reaching....out to the great hereafter. Where is it that fills this deepness I feel.
Nick Drake had an amazingly privileged, silver spoon education and you can't say that man didn't have the blues. He also does an incredible version of this song. You can't tell what's going on inside of people regardless of their background...so don't make assumptions and fall into reverse-snobbery. I agree with you, in that this doesn't feel as heartfelt as the original (or Drake's for that matter) but that doesn't mean she can't give it a go.
@cabaretampere Yeah, it's not a travesty by any means, it just seems pretty pointless, however pretty it is. It lacks the aforementioned performances' quiet gravitas. And I'm not sure I agree with her amending the "when I'm not drinking" line. Still, if her admirers know that she didn't write/arrange the piece, and are turned on to the likes of Jansch and Frank, then that can only be a good thing. Her more recent Neil Young cover is, however, terrible.
I do. The point is her voice - not *necessarily* better, but I prefer female vocalists. If you prefer male vocalists, this would clearly be inferior - there's nothing *wrong* with having a preference, and I prefer female vocalists.

Quite possibly my favorite cover of all time by my all-time favorite female artist (tied with Joni Mitchell). Absolutely flawless.
Very nice Laura. Its good to know there are people keeping this great song alive.
Such a pleasure to listen to this woman.
This is my favorite version. I think there's something really gentle and feminine about it.
She is incredibly talented. What a song.

this has sort of a
nick drake feel to it.

I agree, Anson- I have definitely noticed hints of Joni in Laura Marling's voice.
What a compliment! I couldn't agree more - they're tied for my favorite female artist of all time.
❤
best cover of the song
o walk the line
I appreciate her taste in music, but this is not a patch on the Jackson C Frank original. Anybody put up fleet foxes cover yet?
Nice. 'Prefer Berts version(s). Thanks for posting.
try Nick Drake's version. Can be found on his posthumous Family Tree-album.
winderful, wonderful wonderful
There's almost a little Joni Mitchell in her voice.
Top dollar kim gutman
I absolutely love Laura Marling and she is crazy talented, but in terms "Blues Run The Game"-covers there's hardly a better one than Robin Pecknolds.

dont change the lyrics
@frozenfood1 There is no point of doing a cover unless the sole intention is to be the best? Hmm....
Does anyone REALLY think this is better than Jackson C. Frank or even Bert Jansch's versions? What is the point of it?!
