- Dave and Herb are joined by Sean "Sully" Sullivan, Engineer and FOH Mix Engineer for acts such as Beck, Rihanna, Thom Yorke, Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones (and many more) on the 113th episode of Pensado's Place!
Stump the VK Guy Question:
"What are impulse responses and can I make my own. Also, is it possible to convert them for my plugin reverbs?"
Darrin Fendley's Answer:
"IR, or Impulse Response plugins allow you to "sample" the decay time and reverberation of a space. Sony was one of the first companies to do an IR reverb that I remember. It was a hardware unit called the DRE 777. These beautiful reverbs allowed you to "sample" or "record" just the reverb of a room and then use it like any other revert. Many of today's reverbs like Altiverb are able to do this today right from your computer. If you have a favorite room to track in this allows you to have some of that great tone at home."

I think Sully's attitude summed up some of the attributes that make a great FOH house engineer, sharp, quick, relaxed and to the point. It would be great to see some more interviews with some FOH and monitor guys on Pensado's Place. A lot of other interviews float around just want to talk about what it is like to work for the big artist but not what the aspiring Live and Studio guys want to know. Great interview, I am keen to see more like it.
"Back in my day.." gotta love Dave Pensado..
We need more programs like this one
sully is unreal. such well thought out reasoning on answers.
I worked at Nyquist studio with their engineer Raz Klinghoffer, best mix engineer I've worked with so far
Great show, we need more program like this 👏
Sully is the best. Big love!
What a great interview! Learned a few things. Thanks all.
YES GET A MONITOR ENGINEER ON HERE IT WOULD BE AWESOME TO SEEEEEEE
I got alot of respect for live musicians and engineers after watching this, not like I didn't before. But Sean seems to take his job very seriously, and I never really knew how much goes on behind the live show. Great Episode.
Impulse response is the response of a linear system to a delta function input (an infinitely brief pulse). If you know its impulse response, you know its response to any signal, because any signal is merely a procession of impulses.
Convolution is the process of sliding two functions past each other, integrating the product of the functions as you go. Convolving a linear system's impulse response with a signal gives the same result as if that signal had been put through that linear system.
Another great show! Live Sound! Pensado's Place is always versatile with the subject matter.
Very informative episode! I like that Guy because he's straight forward. Thank you Dave and Herb
Great interview!! Thanks for the upload. Tons of great information.
amazing! thanx for sharing all this information with us mortals.
Great show. Pretty mind-blowing stuff from guys who work with live sound.
Great show (as usual) - good to hear perspectives from outside the studio; Sean's advice will be a big help for an upcoming gig. I've watched every show - the education and insight is paying off for me...things going well. Many thanks to Dave, Herb, guests and all the team : )
Dave's question about clothes was legit!!! I also wonder about how different empty seats sound vs a packed house.
damn, that room is acoustically treated like a beast!!!
in your old room i can hear reflections but this one damn its dead!
This guy knows his business! Amazing
wow, this was great. What an awesome guy. Thank you!
Gotta love those fat Synths!! Great Job Dave!
Really a great question Dave
Great Show ! thanks
Kudos for protecting the ears.
I agree with every comment below :) this interview was so concise, and just perfect. That was amazing!
I've had the mobile 2882 for years - it's cool :)
Great show guys, thanks as always!
Dave, call Olsen Involtini! Incredible FOH!!!
ITL comment. I think it sounds better if you get the synth to only have the reverb when the sound isn't playing. The gate on the reverb slams shut when the next note starts. Now you can have massive reverbs without mudding up the gritty rawness of your synth. Also adding a compressor with an on beat side chain trigger to the reverb will get its tail to pump. Great for longer pauses between note section or drops into breaks... Love the show and Showteks remix of Carly Rae, especially the break.x
excellent, thanks
This show was so fucking real. Thank you so much!! :D
Sully killed it
Super dope episode! #PRODUCEDBYTHEVAMP
***** Please tell me you guys are still trying to get Illangelo, Doc McKinney, or Zodiac to come in? if you cant reach them seeing JMSN in an episode would be so cool!
Great episode. Thank you. ITL really useful and Sean was a mine of info.
A Mesa filter is a asymmetrical filter that can have different slopes on either side of the center freq. and can be as wide as you want. Imagine a bucket style cut or boost with a steep 96db per octave slope on 1 side and a 6db per octave slope on the other side. Look up the Dolby DLP or LM44 for a better idea of how they work
Check out Raz Klinghoffer he's a great mix engineer that works for pretty cheap...
We are in CT, if you are around playing the casinos get in touch, would love to come down and see your set-up/show you any new features/talk geek/give swag/etc.
@ Matt Mullin at 13:18, no reverb there, it sounds more like Dave saying "aahh" to the answer that Sully's giving.
This guy is smart
its called Smaart7 by rational acoustics
Thanks to everyone on this show, great work here. Knowledge, opportunities, motivation! Thank you Pensado's Place :)
The Rev
fucking dave is so funny.
I was wondering about the smart seven microphone systems/software Sully is talking about. Does anyone know the website for it?
Where is Dave's NS10's?
At about 9:50, did Herb really say 'A 3 way pound"?
"I snore at 95dB"
always wondered, who is woman at the beginning?
where are your monitors and lava lamps
You should get Mick Hughes he is the best!!!
anyone know what he means by a Mesa Filter?
Non Linear Reverb > Gating a Reverb
There are many technical reasons for this.
If you're watching this thanks to our lovely (not so lovely) teacher, Jason Garner, or from another "Survey of Audio Engineering" teacher then like and comment, " This Sucks! Who's Dumb Idea Was This?!! 😑"
Anyone else notice the weird reverb throw @13:18 hahaha wtf?
whitney houston.
lol
@Alex La Vecchia LOTS OF LOVE
