Daihatsu Hijet Review | Do Kei Trucks Work In Britain?

  • This week on Buckle Up, the boys drive around in something that looks more like a childrens toy than a real working vehicle, the Daihatsu Hijet.
Japans answer to the Ford F-150 is really very different from anything we've had on the channel before, and since the van version of this type of vehicle has been famously rolled over by both Top Gear and Fifth Gear naturally we were very cautious of exceeding the vehicles limits, except no one seemed to tell Jasper that...

I'm in the lengthy process of importing a 1996 4WD Hijet into the US and I wish we didn't have these protectionist laws that only allow me to import a vehicle that is over 25 years old, so I only get a 660 cc engine with a carburetor instead of a 1300 cc engine with electronic fuel injection. Regulators require us to have safe cars, and they require us to have efficient cars, but they also won't allow us to import modern safe and efficient cars.

I theory the 1.3 from a Geo Metro would fit in the space as it was the suzuki engine. I don't know a huge amount about the vans but that engine also fitted in the Jimny which also had a kei trim so it should be packaged tightly enough.

@@BuckleUpShow - My Hijet is the TwinCam 12V with the EF-GS engine, and parts are even more difficult to source. I can buy parts from Japan with a long lead time and high shipping cost. I can also buy an entire lightly used salvage engine. I've wondered if an S210 or S510 engine would fit in my S110, and how difficult that would be. It'd be a nice upgrade, for the EFI alone. Thanks for the Geo Metro suggestion. I can source those engines locally, although a lightly used one may be a trick.

Having always wanted a kei car of some description I had always had the thought of popping one of the 1.3's in one, since proper kei engine parts are hard to get here too. The thing is UK got a lot more 1.3 Japanese cars than the United States did, off the top of my head I can't think of anything other than some of the Geo models and like you say the trick would be finding a lightly used one.
Hope you get through the rest of the import alright and have lots of fun with your Hijet, they're a great laugh

Kei trucks are just classed as normal vehicles here in the UK - they're too large/heavy to be classed as quadricycles. You therefore just need a standard car license to drive them.
