  • During the time when Belgium shone brightly and its capital Brussels, “brusselled” as the great Jacques Brel called it. Hergé, long time publicist, created in 1957, along with his Studios, the flag and the logo of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition.
    This journey of highly scientific value was organised as part of the International Geophysical Year, under the direction of the Belgian explorer Gaston de Gerlache. On this occasion, Belgium accompanied eight other countries for the establishment of research stations on the huge frozen continent (the King Baudouin base for Belgium).
    The contribution of Tintin's father came in the form of a graphic symbol inspired by a stylised compass. He was also the emblem of the 1966 expedition led in concert, this time with the Netherlands. The compass designed by the Studios Hergé includes a needle placed in the North-South direction and a cockade representing the colours of Belgium.
    For the record, the members of the 1957-58 Belgian Expedition received a vital supply from Avenue Louise (headquarters of the Hergé Studios since 1950): a complete collection of Tintin Adventure albums, to brighten up and warm the hearts of those who would spend the winter on the ice floe!

    You are right these should be given to a Museum of some kind to allow the nation to see them before they completely rot and are no longer accessible to the public.
    great videos carry on with the explorations.

    It's an amazing smell, old equipment such as them old snow cats, I can't smell it enough(lol). I agree, before it's too late they need to go to a museum like place for historical motorized equipment.
    Enjoy your explores greatly, keep up the great job. Cheers 👍✌

    WOOOW, what a trip! It has been a long time dream of mine to visit Antarctica and the Neumayer III station but of course that will most likely never happen, unfortunately. How cool that these vehicles are still there, it wouldn't have surprised me at all had they just left them in Antarctica, at that time not a lot of care was taken on the environment, only many years later it became a commitment to pack everything you bring to Antarctica out with you afterwards. It's a shame they have not been cared for better though, given their history.
    I wonder what the consumption of hemi-powered sno-cats was in Antarctica, even modern diesel-powered ones have a massive consumption under Antarctic conditions and they have to be run on jet fuel IIRC because ordinary diesel would freeze.

    Superb video as ever; it’s awesome / dreadful how something so amazing can be left in limbo / isolation. It’s like these vehicles and the mission they were designed for achieved their goal; then allowed to fade from the public consciousness like a dream. Evidently the keeper of the vehicles still has memories; just a shame they are suffering from lack of maintenance and physical care. One question; What was the emotional music used as intro? Lovely

    Actually, these aren't abandoned. The owner holds on to them because they hold emotional value (as he was on the polar misson), there are problems to get the out of the house (house would need to be torn down to get them out) and some legal reasons why they can't be sold/given away. (officially still government-owned) They are in great shape to have been "abandoned" for 50+ years, the only damage they took in all those years was because of Urbexers.

    • @CrusaderSports250
      @CrusaderSports250 Před 3 lety

      Even though they are still "government owned" surely they could be displayed in a museum, just view it as parking them somewhere different, and as for removal, crane them over the house, my father in the mid sixties attended a crane as the travelling mechanic, it was there to lift a boat a man had made in his garden, with insufficient side access it had to be lifted over his house, which it duly was and onto a lorry, although they would be heavier than the boat cranes today are far more capable, the only thing about displaying them would be to keep all three together as they should be.
