    I like how you’re infusing some art/film school knowledge into your analysis. But a pet peeve of mine is when people say “pan up” or “pan down” instead of “tilt up” or “tilt down” for camera moves along the vertical axis. Pan describes a move along the horizontal axis. And when Bill’s twisting/rotating the camera, the term for this is “canting”. Thanks for doing these, you’re elevating the discussion nicely.

      The world is very different then what it was 30 years ago. I believe we now have enough of a social economic structure that allows for the survival and perpetuation of diverse skateboarding niches (that includes pants aesthetics). In this sense I hardly believe in a unified fashion direction for skating anymore. A unified major trend is over in skateboarding. Every one has their own little self sustaining bubble now. People will use the pants they identify with most instead of following a leading trend it’s what I mean.

    I believe that Strobeck may be more aligned with a progressive marketing angle now. While all skate parts are a brand advertisement (especially supreme like holy shit), the capture focus on material/physical interaction of skating with Strobeck is interesting this time. The board, shoe, clothes etc... It is like a runway model or something, I don't really pay attention to the model, yet the subliminal element of the person who interacts with the material is very important to the overall perception. My eyes during this whole vid kept getting drawn to the dumbass outfits because the obstacle perspectives lacked so much dimension. The depersonalization is a little more than usual in this one imo, I feel like he usually tries to sell the models and personalities/material+skating as opposed to the PURE skating/material.

  • @Spelonker
    @Spelonker Před 2 lety +25

    I initially didn't like it but it grew on me the longer I watched. One thing that bugs me about the colour correction wasn't so much the pallet, but the way it crushes the blacks, losing all detail in things like the skater's pants. Makes it harder to pick out what leg is doing what when it comes to a trick. That's just an issue with having compressed footage to work with when it comes to colour grading, though, it would be nice if they were wearing a different colour outfit.
    One thing I did really like overall was the editing. It felt different enough without being distracting or obnoxious. The music choices were interesting too, making informing the edit in a different way than the usual "cut to the beat of this 4/4 song".

  • @-regular-james-
    @-regular-james- Před 2 lety +3

    The best example of Strobeck's "single-shot" trickery is six minutes into Candyland. Jeff Carlyle skates through some pigeons, and then half-cab back 50's a handrail. Took me several watches before I realized that it wasn't one take. Then I went back and watched a bunch of Strobeck stuff, and realized he does it alot. Still love it, though.
    Honestly, anyone who hates on Strobeck isn't a fan of people trying different stuff. I mean, it's fine to have an opinion, and to not like a certain style. But to say the dude's "bad" at filming (which is what I see a lot on the old interweb, people love to hate Strobeck) is ignoring facts. The dude has been filming top-tier skaters for over twenty years. There's no doubt he knows how to film. He's making a choice to film this way; it's not because he's "bad" at it.

    i think it's fine to use footage of people that don't want to be in your video IF they actually have something to do with what's happening in the video. an obvious example is filming people freaking out when they kick you out of a spot. that's fine footage to use in my opinion. they made themselves part of what you're doing and now it's part of the narrative of your little skate trip. filming a random passerby that clearly doesn't want to be filmed, especially when just you're doing it because you feel like its artsy or because they're pretty is just kinda shitty to do.
    as far as strobeck's filming goes, i absolutely love his color grading, i think he always manages to use color to make his shots look really interesting. i'm less of a fan of the way he whip pans up and down so much because of how disorienting it is. i'd much rather have a more empty shot that constantly be hit with disorienting whip pans up and down every second or two. the dutch angles i'm fine with, i mean there's a lot of that stuff even filming fisheye, though it's usually not as extreme as strobeck is doing it here. it's mostly just the frequent whip pans that i really don't like.

  • @ariekanibalie
    @ariekanibalie Před 2 lety +5

    For me, the problem isn't what you don't see in Strobeck's ultra-panned in filming but what you do: extreme close-ups of skaters' faces to where you can see the acne, the baby fat, etc. I know I'm not the first to notice this, there was talk on a SLAP thread about this too, but it's a leeriness in the way the subjects are portrayed. The whole point of the Strobeck/Supreme aesthetic is to go beyond just documenting a skate trick but rather aims to give a documentary-slice-of-life effect that you also see in e.g. Larry Clark's films and photography, and which at times can feel almost voyeuristic as a result. I recently re-watched the movie KIDS, and Clark definitely crosses the line between sweaty realism and teensploitation. Maybe it's just something you become more aware of as you grow older and come to understand film always has these implied perspectives that you might not notice on first sight, but when you do it's hard to un-see. Not suggesting any shady intentions on the part of Strobeck/Supreme, maybe it's also just an aesthetic nod to 90s Calvin Klein ads and the like, but those were problematic for the same reason, really.

    • @EvanDrinkwater
      @EvanDrinkwater Před 2 lety +4

      I would agree with that assessment to be honest, and Kids is a good comparison to make with Strobeck’s Stallion. Plus Stallion had this pre/pubescent homoerotic vibe to it which made me feel uncomfortable at times. When a camera hangs in focus for too long and with that ‘leariness’ you mention it evokes this bizarre kind of sexualization. It’s a bit hard to fully explain, but it just makes me feel weird!

      @@EvanDrinkwater I was thinking about some shots in Stallion especially, yeah. TBH, i didn't even want to use the term 'sexualisation' because my younger self would have called my older self a fuckin perv for the same objections to KIDS - which I thought was AWESOME at the time, even if it portrayed skaters less like I was but maybe wanted to be. But guess what? Supreme is a fashion brand at the end of the day. How do fashion brands sell their goods? It's not always the case, but 'sexualising' models (even if they're technically 'sponsored riders') is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

    • @EvanDrinkwater
      @EvanDrinkwater Před 2 lety +2

      @@ariekanibalie yep but at the end of the day sexualization is exactly what it is. Sometimes it’s subtle and sometimes it’s overt!
      I guess in this instance though the videographer who shoots the footage and edits it has a role in the way the subjects are portrayed. And to be honest it’s the first time I’ve observed this in skateboarding, I’ve been skating for about 20 plus years now and never seen this kind of portrayal of skaters.
      Gifted Hater made some really good points in the video above, Strobeck has an artistic flair for sure. And a noteworthy flair it is, MindGoblin was less like Stallion but Stallion still left that gross taste in my mouth after watching it.
      And to your point about using the term ‘sexualization’ just use it. Because it’s what it is, and it’s plastered all over the shit we see on the daily. The worst has got to be Tik Tok 🤢 and Instagram (less so than Tik Tok)
      The second I see a link tree mention I’m just like I’m done! Supreme is on the sex sells bandwagon but then so is every 18 year half pretty girl on the internet!
      Ha I must sound like such an old shit of a person! I’m only 35, but it’s old enough to notice the weird way the world has become!
      Anyhow rant over I guess ha ha 🤣

    • @ariekanibalie
      @ariekanibalie Před 2 lety +1

      @@EvanDrinkwater Yes, (hyper)sexualisation is a thing, but it's one of those things people tend to feel is so tied up with their ability to express themselves as individuals that even mentioning it makes you a prude, a perv, a cancel culture warrior or what have you. However you feel about this, for the generation growing up with social media, presenting yourself in a sexual light is almost second nature. Let's just say I'm glad I don't have kids - boys or girls - to have to explain at some point that their internet fuckability rating isn't their worth as a human being. At any rate, Supreme isn't an individual's social media channel or even a small skate company 'doing them' but a billion-dollar asset in the private equity Carlyle Group's portfolio, so a little more scrutiny seems perfectly in order here.

    Not the biggest fan of the strobec filming style but this is definitely a push in the right direction. Would love to see him experiment more with his shots in another way other than just turning the camera (the shot with the bricks was actually really rad). I feel as if he hadn’t released this video (along with others) to his youtube channel it would genuinely annoy me trying to watch considering that i would rather see someone’s skating abilities over cinematic sequences. e.g Suciu’s Verso part walks that fine line. At the end of the day it is a skate video ya know. Everyone films like him now like you said so it obviously works, but how far are we willing to take it? will this film style hold up in the years to come?

    You lose everything at once but strobecks filming is cool because he gets to focus on what makes the trick/skater/spot interesting. Although it’s really just marketing for supreme
    For me it’s better than a super produced drone shot skate video.

    • @tavish2789
      @tavish2789 Před 2 lety

      i dont think anyone likes super produced drone shots, if there used right they can show off the size of an obstacle effectively but i almost never see them being used to actually film tricks (thankfully).

    I'm sorry but that opening argument about filming regarding dead space is really flawed. There are plenty of HD filmers who utilize the full screen without sacrificing the visibility of the spot, skater or trick. I'd argue MOST modern videos accomplish this just fine. I also have on good authority that many of the filmers who copy this zoom in style are doing so because company representatives have straight up told them to. If your filming only works out some of the time and it has to be explained, it probably isn't very good.
    Love your content tho :)
