In this context I feel using "keep" is not relevant. KEEP - means to hold something or to have something for a specific period of time. PUT - means to lay or place something somewhere; no time period is involved. (කොතනද තිබ්බෙ?) And also in such situations native speakers most probably use "Present Perfect Tense", instead of "Past Tense". As the phone is still missing and it's describing the near past. But using past tense is gramatically perfect. Nothing wrong in it either.
