      I always assumed it was the glute muscle. Didn’t realise there was another muscle there until I was describing the pain to a friend and she told me it was the piriformis. Why do our bodies get so complicated once we turn 40 but not yet over 50?!! 😆😆

      @@goat8252 The pain is insane. Because that’s been flared up, and the hamstring on the right hand side, it’s flared up the nerves pain alone the very very lower back. The nerves get so painful that the only way I can describe them is it feels like hot ice searing my skin. And I get the sciatica nerve pain. But not according to the Drs.
      If I bend forward at the waist, within a minute my whole lower body from waist to toes will go pins and needles, all tingly, and completely numb at the same time. And the Drs are trying to tell me that I don’t have a pinch nerve in my back because one doesn’t show up on an MRI. Pfft! Not all nerves are visible via MRI positioning.

    I came across your channel recently because of poor military healthcare and sleepless nights seeking anything to help.
    I'm 34 and having severe sciatica symptoms and for months my medical team has come to the conclusion that it's from my back and have had zero relief from physical therapy or medications they've prescribed. I haven't had a good night's sleep in idk how long.
    The combination of your channel and Squat University led me to believe that it was piriformus syndrome. In two days of rolling out, stretching, and incorporating multiple videos of both channels into my daily routine I've finally had significant relief and fingers crossed it continues to head in that direction.
    Thank you for your channel.

  • @Nevererasealwaysrecord
    @Nevererasealwaysrecord Před 2 lety +5

    ❇️Thanks guys. This has been giving me hell grief for months now in my left muscle side. And of course, it’s now irritated because the opposite leg is having troubles and I am favouring the left left side that has this problem.
    🛑❓But if you read this, I am in desperate need of advice on how to fix a damaged hamstring on the same knee that had a replacement on July 1st. The knee was healing up well and going great guns in getting back on track. Then the hamstring went dodgy 5 weeks post op from an exercise the hospital physio said to do. I then spent four weeks carefully still moving for the knee to still be getting movement for healing, but leg up and resting the hamstring as much as possible.
    Seemed pretty good after 4 weeks. So I doubled the recumbent bike time and did 5 sit to stand before going to the hairdressers. There I was sitting for an hour and could not put my leg straight out in front of me. So I had to have my leg out to the side. I went to stand up and BAM! hamstring told me to get lost! 😆.
    It’s now three weeks in, I’m doing what the two private physios are telling me (one working on TKR swelling on top, other working on hamstring underneath) and up the back of the thigh, but the main pain from it is behind the knee.
    ‼️HELP! I am icing, heating, elevating, tennis ball massage, everything I can do with not having a 24/7 physio and I desperately need to get this back to normal due to different things happening, how life interrupting this is, how much it has set back my TKR recovery and the pain!

    • @brotoubrotou3164
      @brotoubrotou3164 Před 2 lety +1

      Always be aware of what is too much and stop. Both bob and Brad always say if it hurts don’t do it. PTs can do a lot of damage to you because they don’t know how you’re feeling. They only know this is the exercise they want you to do. It’s up to everyone to say no more.

    • @Nevererasealwaysrecord
      @Nevererasealwaysrecord Před rokem

      @@brotoubrotou3164 Turns out it wasn’t the hamstring damaged a second time around. I was told that after a replacement I would no longer get bakers cysts. Awesome! Finally this thing that has interrupted my life since childhood will forever be gone!! So I assumed that since “I wouldn’t have one again after a replacement”, that they would have drained this existing one. Nope!
      It’s still a massive flare up, and it’s been what? 4-5 weeks since we last talked here? I had an inkling it was a bakers cyst. I remember trying to exercise and thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think this is the hammy because the pain is exactly spot on like a bakers cyst. But why would I have one when they’d of gotten rid of it during surgery?’ Pfft. Yeah right! They didn’t.
      It took 3 weeks to convince my GP to give me a referral for an ultrasound. Then I convince the hospital to see me to check on things (and I was hoping they’d do a further scan of some sort because of tendons and ligaments), but the Registrar was like “Oh yeah, you’ll still get bakers cyst because it’s excess synovial fluid, (yeah yeah I know what it is, but why am I getting this post op?) During surgery we never touch a bakers cyst.” he says.
      OMG seriously? So you want me to do all this daily physio, plus try to get on with life on a knee that’s been replaced, yet has a flared up large cyst that inhibits movement?
      Sure. No problems Doc!

      It was explained to me that the sciatica is a result of piriformis syndrome. It was THE worst pain ever, sending me to the ER 3x and to urgent care twice. I saw a chiropractor who, while great for everything else, aggravated the situation more. Several times it took me 15-20 min to walk 15 ft to my vehicle in the I parking lot, sobbing the entire time. Then I had rotator cuff surgery and the PT coming to my home for the 1st 6 wks post-op FIXED ME! He did massage, TENS and exercises with me and gave me homework between visits and within 3 visits, no more sciatica. That was 10 mos ago. If I don't keep up with the piriformis stretches, it starts to get sore again so that's incentive to stay with the homework for sure!

    • @smst5215

      In my experience I started to have what I thought was sciatica nerve pain. It was a pain running from the middle of my butt all the way down to my toes, with numbness. Only on my left side. I found out this is from the piriformis muscle. I have heard it called "fake sciatica" because it mimics the same pain, signs and symptoms as real sciatica nerve pain. Usually real sciatica nerve pain radiates from your lower back, not the middle of your butt muscle. Usually from a herniated disk in your lower spine. If you research these videos, you will get a much better understanding of what I am saying here. Hope you find what you are looking for and feel better soon.

It's hard to get my left hamstring or left abdominal muscles to contract. I'll need to do more research into the piriformis.
    EDIT: OK I listened to the part about glutteal amnesia and I think that might be a major part of my problems.Tried some of these exercises and they did seem to activate the dead areas somewhat. Will keep giving them a try and see if they cause an improvement.

    Thars really interesting. I've struggled with this for years and especially after rupturing my Achilles and needing an FHL tendon transfer operation. I now put more weight down through my heel and have hardly any calf muscle on that leg. Trying to go up on the ball of my foot is next to impossible for example.

    Is it safe to use these methods to alleviate pain, as well?

    i just recently watched a video about walking and pulling instead of pushing. so he was saying to not use your glutes, but to instead pull yourself forward with your hip flexors. and you guys are saying to use your glutes, which ones right?

    I ran three months 5k running program. I got hip side pain and piriformis too.
    Right side. And left right foot balance is 47/53%.
    Now running is off three weeks and still I feel stiffness. Piriformis is better hip little too. I just cycling and walking with sticks now.
    Streching not helping much!?
