Mafex is killing it with their comic renditions of Superman.
Agree - they do strong work
This straps are in fact completely accurate to action comics number one, they were there the first issue, some pages they were red but others they were just blue
Yes, first few appearances from Superman, his costume would look different from panel to panel, almost. The S-shield, the cape, the boots, the trunks. Cheap printing, rushed coloring, Shuster not having zeroed in entirely what the character looked like.

That John Byrne Superman figure I instantly recognized is the one they used in the CZcams series “I’m a Marvel and I’m a DC.” I used to love those stupid videos lol!

Great review! John Byrne was one of my favorite Superman artists. I would love it if Mafex would make a version of his Superman with different head sculpts. Especially a smiling head sculpt. I have the Mafex hush Superman and I love that figure. I think they would make an excellent representation of his work in action figure form.

Love Superman ever since I saw Superman the animated series & both of the Justice League cartoons. So obviously,Bruce Timm & James Tucker pretty much shaped my mental image for the character. But I do love the artists that are featured in this vid. John Byrne especially. Aside from Byrne,I do love other artists. Like Ed Benes,Patrick Gleason,Doug Mahnke,Jorge Jimenez,Jim Cheung,Jerry Ordway,Francis Manapul & Ed McGuiness.

Thank for this video ! DC Direct made so many variant of Superman Figure, Turner's version, McGuiness version, Lee's version, Miller's version. But my favorite is definitively the Man of Steel Byrne's version.

The second figure you showed for Byrne reads to me as being more a Dan Jurgens Superman. The DC Direct Byrne figure at least had the hair right for Byrne's art if nothing else.
Agree - neither of them is "perfect", but I think you can see how each has their merits
@@CarbonScoring Of course. I even own that one and it's overall a pretty represenative figure for the look of Superman in the Post-Crisis era starting in '86 from Byrne on through to about 2000 or so. It's a little Byrne, little bit Jurgens could even see a bit of Bogdonove in it. The first one is almost like a rough draft for trying to capture Byrne's artstyle it just doesn't quite get there IMO.

Awesome video, superman is my third favorite superheroe under spider man and batman, but for me The red and blue boy scout is The best superhero of all time and all The eras.

John Byrne is such a legend if you start reading Spider-Man from the beginning you go thru a bunch of MASTERS but for me when Byrne started drawing him for the marvel team ups it was like someone kicked in the door or shattered the glass ceiling idk pick a metaphor he did it. Another great video! Cheers!

I'd say the Ed Mcguinness Public Enemies Superman is the greatest superman figure based on a specific art style. Tim Bruckner's sculpt really captures Mcguinness' stylizations.
You are so right - if this series continues, I wanted to do a whole episode on the Mcguinness figures cause they are so spot on
The Superman that was in a 2-pack with Lois always looked like Kurt Schaffenberger's Superman to me. Admittedly, Swan and Schaffenberger's Superman look a lot alike.
edit: the head on the "21 points of articulation Superman" figure (re-released with an angry face in the JLA line, in a 2-pack with Doomsday, etc.), is somewhat influenced by Ed McGuinness art, without it being a 1:1 recreation of his art in 3D form (DC Direct did that a few years later on the Superman/Batman line). Ed McGuinness was probably the most popular artist doing Superman at the time that figure was released.

Mafex Hush Superman kinda bothers me. I guess it’s the proportions or something. It just looks off. Other than that, it’s the best Superman figure on the market ever!

Byrne picked a bad choice to show how dc direct was lazy with his figure. Cuz mignolas art is significantly more stylized compared to his standard art.
