- King's Field is FromSoftware's first game, released in 1994 on the PSX. It spawned a franchise of 4 games and is the deepest roots of FromSoft's Dark Fantasy storytelling & their tendency for obtuse design. But is the game good? How well does it hold up in the modern day?

They dont shift the graves for every new king, they probably just dig deeper. Thats why theyre newer as you get further down.
The rapier weapon actually has sword magic too, it shoots a barrage of light needles. It's very useful before getting the moonlight.
If going for a run that doesn't reach 80 STR/MAG the Colichemarde is incredible. Especially as it jumpstarts your magic exp each time you hit a tough foe. Boy did it take a long time to defeat Reinhardt III with that though, it felt more like a classic RPG turn-taking battle how often I had to duck into the menu to heal and replenish, those missiles he shoots tears through your HP before Level 30.
@@HighPriestFuneral Eh, not _that_ long. I beat the entire game on my first run of my first day of playing, and with no non-pit deaths (with a dedicated guide and not counting a few deaths while internalizing the controls), and that was the method advised. Even then, I had way, WAY more health resources than I needed.
Honestly, the only _real_ tight spot was with the Gold Golems on Floor 4, had they hit any harder or faster I _would_ have failed. But that was right before hitting Swordmaster rank and thus unlocking Sword Magic in the first place.
Thank you for the 4:3 aspect ratio! Looks great on a crt! It always annoys me how many videos on here about games that arent in widescreen are in widescreen.
There are 4 weapons with sword magic.
The Rapier with the long name. It shoots a spray of light needles. Very good damage and very cheap on mp. Probably the best way to grind magic points as well.
The Flame Sword. Shoots several fireballs. Not all that strong.
The Triple Fang. Shoots homing missiles that have a tiny aoe on impact.
The Moonlight Sword. Shoots multiple sword waves with the center wave exploding on impact into a large aoe.

Wow, now I just realize I played the very first souls game. And I loved it. Back when I was just 19 years young...... OMG I am getting old. I also love Elden Ring!! From software... From code writer to code writer. You rock!
I personally found the music to be excellent throughout. Floor 4 in particular fits so well of cycling through the Dark Mage's Maze. (Also, here's a hint that I only figured out by accident, if you use the Green Dragon Rod on Floor 4 you'll be taken to the portal right next to the Magician's Map, bypassing half the area, great for a second playthrough.)

I wonder how fromsoft would tackle a first-person dungeon crawler like kingsfield today.
Number 4 was one of my first Playstation 2 games when I was a kid.
A first-person From Software collection would be nice. The collection: King's Field series, Echo Night series, Eternal Ring, and the Shadow Tower series. I'd buy that.
I actually love the map system. It makes it feel so genuine

All I can think of when I see the Moonlight sword drop is it shattering into polygons as it hits the ground.
a good kingsfield video if you wanna start playing the game, good introduction and lore explaining and some tips too (hidden walls, not to buy anything on the merchant because you can find the items later on)
I mean by the end you’ll be rolling in money so it’s good to buy from merchants ngl
Especially since bloodstones and moonstones don’t do anything except sell for money, u can get over 2250 gold for free enough to buy the gold cross a few pieces of armor and some healing
Big fan of the pacing of this game with the floors giving concrete progress. Amazing for 1994, literally 3D wizardry. My Favorite or Froms PS1 titles.

The Truth Mirror doesn't _only_ work on NPCs... enemies have their own bios as well. Unfortunately you can't get close enough to the final boss to read his bio, despite it being in the code.

i love the kings field games and its a real shame that fromsoft have abandoned them. it was there flagship games. it started fromsoft down the path its on. when i was a teenager (feeling my age now) i went to my local game shop and saw kingsfield. i picked it up on a whim and fell in love with it right away. i spent months playing it. took me forever to complete. i was overjoyed to have done so but then i found out i was playing kf2 cos they never released the first game outside of japan. so i went and got a mod chip for my psx and got kingsfield jp. couldnt understand a thing that was going on really but still i had to finish it. i would legit screem like a child if fromsoft said they where making a new kingsfield game or even just a remake at the very least.

this game is complicated, i remember when i were younger, i used to love Kings Field 3 on de ps1, it were like nothing i never played. But going back to KF1 it feels kinda clunkier than ever.
I know peaple tell that this game is just "dark souls before dark souls were dark souls", i think, this game, on itself (and the sequels+ the shadow towers) are them own thing, and even if the game has its similarities with them Dark Souls game them kids talk these days, i think the game, on itself, is an realy nice experience.
although, i would not play the first entry on the series, ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
