Starting A New Sketchbook! Cover Page Art in a Hahnemuhle 100% Cotton A4 Book

- It's time to start a new sketchbook, yay! This time I've chosen one of the new Hahnemuhle books, with 100% cotton 250gsm paper, in a size A4 Landscape which is what I like to use for my CZcams videos. Will it be better than my previous Etchr Sketchbook? I really hope so! Let's find out, as I fill out the very first cover page in the book, with a lettering and a painting. I even added a pocket!

Sticking a pocket on the front is such a fantastic idea that I never would have thought of 😍
I've been watching papercraft videos recently, so it was at the forefront of my mind. Too lazy to paint the page? Oooh pocket!! 😂
Ooo I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about using watercolor on it! I've been eying those books but they're SO expensive!
So far so good, but I'm only one more page spread into the book (which you'll see in the next video). I'll probably need to paint more pictures before I have a more informed opinion.
That looks like a great start - your flower is so beautiful, the writing isn't too bad either 😆 and the scrapbook paper fits perfectly. If only this book wasn't so expensive. I found it on Amazon Germany for 51.50 € - which translates to 86 AUD. I knew cotton paper of that quality isn't cheap but I'm kind of shocked now 😧 I can't paint good enough (yet) to treat me with such a gem Perhaps this will be my Christmas present to myself 😊
Thank you! That is still cheaper than what the book costs in Australia, lol! I found it on sale which helped a bit, but otherwise I'm classing it as a Business Expense. 😂

I had to organise all of my loose artworks into folders, for that very reason....they were everywhere! 😂

This is a lovely first page. I always drool over expensive sketchbooks but can't pull the trigger because I'm afraid I'll be too afraid to use it. My Canson XL mixed media spiral sketchbook will suffice until I'm braver.
I like Canson books too, they're good value! I just splurged on this one because I like to use an A4 cotton book for filming....a "business expense", haha!

I checked out the Hahnemuhle cotton sketchbooks here in Canada a while ago and the price scared me away 😅. When I finish more of my sketchbook stash, I might order one to try 😊.
I bought mine on sale, and it was still around $100 which was a bit eye watering, but I am calling it a "business expense", haha!
@@BeckyTregear Wow, that is a lot. That made me want to see what current prices are in Canada. I checked one online spot in Canada where I’d previously looked at the smaller size. The A4 size is now $81 + $30 shipping + tax. The grand total in Canadian comes to $128 😱. I’d be too scared to breathe on it lol.
@@FaithAnnNB I know the feeling! I bought mine from an art shop, and it stayed in its plastic wrapping for a month or so. I kept looking at it wondering if I had the courage to open it, lol!

Becky, your opening page is just gorgeous. I have the same sketchbook still in its wrapper and am glad to see you used watercolor pencils in it. Now I know to use my pencils in the book.....I don't think I would have thought of it otherwise.
I didn't know if pencils would work until I started on that first page....thankfully the were fine, lol!

Well that was a gorgeous page spread for the first pages of your new sketchbook!! Looks awesome! I tend to be very precious with my more expensive cotton sketchbooks and cotton paper, but not really bothered by the cheaper ones, and I think I'll always try my best in my best sketchbooks, the difference between my cheap and expensive ones they totally look like different people have painted in them hahaha, lovely vid! :D

I bought the A6 size a little over a year ago and I love it. I also only use it for my "better" work. I have a lot of cheaper sketchbooks to play around and practice in. ❤
They seem to be really great books - I might get some smaller ones once I've finished some of my others....lol!

Loved your first page. Can you recommend a fairly cheap set of 24/36 watercolour pencils for around $50 AUD.
Thank you! Is anything $50 anymore? 😂 Check out The Art Shop, which usually has the best prices for pencils - maybe something in the Derwent range? On Amazon or other large online conglomerate, the Arrtx pencils are really great too. They're very similar to Polychromos!
I got the portrait size a few weeks ago. Beautiful book but I'm not too happy with the paper. I tend to work quite wet and I don't think it takes wet washes very well. I'd be interested in how you do with straight watercolor.
I haven't had too much issue yet, but then I haven't yet used a lot of water....time will tell how it holds up for me. I may be a bit cautious now, after hearing your experience.
I love your lettering 😍 do you happen to remember the names of the pinks you used? I would love to try those pencils and always like to buy a gradient set.
From memory: lilac, purple, light purple, pink and granite rose. I'm pretty sure that's all of them! If there is a deeper colour it was probably violet. 😄

I think I want to get that lettering book. It looks really nice and I also love Jess and what she does with her sketchbooks and how beautifully she incorporates some text. Do the glued in things make the book lumpy or is ok because the paper is thick enough?
It's a very useful book and well worth having! The paper is thick enough in the sketchbook that light gluing is fine, though I'm sure putting in too much stuff would make it get a bit lumpy! The inner cover wasn't an issue thankfully.
Isn’t cotton paper supposed to absorb the paint and cellulose paper allows the paint to sit on top?
It does, but the sizing kind of stops it from absorbing all the way in....it's hard to explain in words what I have in my head, haha!
