நீண்ட நாளாக பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று இன்று தான் இந்த படத்தை பார்த்தேன். சொல்ல முடியாத நடிப்பு கமல் அவர்களின் நடிப்பு அருமையான இயக்கம் பாலசந்தர் இது போன்ற ஒரு படத்தை இப்பொழுது நினைத்து பார்க்க முடியாது.1.8.24

'காம்போ'வின் சூப்பர் ஹிட் படங்களில் ஒன்று 'வறுமையின் நிறம் சிவப்பு'. வறுமை மட்டுமே வாழ்வாகிப் போன, அன்றைய வேலையில்லாத இளைஞர்களின் அவலத்தைக் கொஞ்சம் ஆக்ரோஷமாகப் பேசிய படம் இது.
கதை டெல்லியில் நடக்கும். ரங்கனாக கமல்ஹாசன், தேவியாக ஸ்ரீதேவி, பிரதாப்பாக பிரதாப் போத்தன், ரங்கனின்
நண்பர்களாக திலீப், எஸ்.வி.சேகர், ரங்கனின் தந்தையாக பூர்ணம் விஸ்வநாதன்,
ஸ்ரீ தேவியின் தந்தையாக ஒரு விரல் கிருஷ்ணா ராவ் உள்பட பலர் நடித்திருந்தனர். பிரதாப், அவர் சொந்தக் குரலில் டப்பிங் பேசியிருந்தார்.
வாய்பேச முடியாத ஓவியக் கலைஞராக நடித்திருக்கும் பரணி, கே.பாலசந்தர் படங்களின் டிசைனர். அவர் நிஜமான ஓவியர் என்பதால் அந்த கேரக்டரில் அவரையே நடிக்க வைத்தார்.
நடிகர் திலீப், இந்தப் படத்தில்தான் அறிமுகமானார். இதற்குப் பிறகு பல படங்களில் அவர் ஹீரோக்களுக்கு நண்பராகவே நடித்தார். 'நினைத்தாலே இனிக்கும்' படத்தில் சிறிய வேடத்தில் நடித்திருந்த எஸ்.வி.சேகருக்கு இதில், கமலின் நண்பராகப் படம் முழுவதும் வருகிற கேரக்டர். படத்தின் டைட்டிலில் அறிமுகம் திலீப்- சேகர்- பரணி என்றே போடுவார்கள்.
தன்னுடன் சண்டைப் போட்டுவிட்டு டெல்லிக்குப் போன மகனை, சலூன் கடையில் வேலை பார்ப்பவனாகக் கண்டதும் அதிர்ச்சியாவார் பூர்ணம் விஸ்வநாதன். அப்போது கமல் வசனம் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்க, ஏதும் பேசாமல் முகத்திலே உணர்ச்சிகளைக் கொட்டியிருப்பார் பூர்ணம்.
இந்தப் படத்தில், வலி நிறைந்த கதையை நகைச் சுவையாகவும்,
நையாண்டியாகவும் தனது ஸ்டைலில் சொல்லியிருப்பார்

அழுத்தம். சில இடங்களின் பாரதியின் கவிதைகளே காட்சியின் 'எமோஷனை' பூர்த்தி செய்யும். கமல் ஒரு கோபக்கார இளைஞனை கண்முன் நிறுத்தியிருப்பார். இந்தி நடிகர் சுஷாந்த் சிங் ராஜ்புத் மறைவுக்குப் பிறகுதான் 'நெபோடிசம்' என்ற வார்த்தை அதிகம் பேசப்பட்டது. ஆனால், அப்போதே, இந்தப் படத்தில் வரும் இன்டர்வியூ காட்சியில் கோபமாகத் தனது சர்டிபிகேட்டுகளை கமல் கிழித்தெறியும்போது, 'நெபோடிசம் டவுண் டவுண்' என்ற வார்த்தையை அவர் மூலமாகப் பயன்படுத்தி இருப்பார் கே.பாலசந்தர்.

தீபாவளிக்கு இந்தப் படம் வெளியான நாளில் பாரதிராஜாவின் 'நிழல்கள்' படமும் வெளியாகி இருந்தது. 2 படங்களும் வேலையில்லா திண்டாட்டத்தைத்தான் பேசின. 6.11.1980-ம் ஆண்டில் வெளியானது வறுமையின் நிறம் சிவப்பு.
43 வருடங்கள் ஆனாலும் இன்றைய காலத்துக்கும் தேவையான விஷயத்தையே அந்தப் படம் பேசியிருக்கிறது.

Varumayin Niram Sivappu was released on 6 November 1980 alongside Nizhalgal with both films having similar themes of unemployment. Aakali Rajyam was released on 9 January 1981. Writing for Kalki, Santhanam criticised the title for lacking relevance to the story, felt the story lacked depth, but praised the performances of Haasan, Sridevi, Pratap and Sekar, though he felt the climax seemed rushed. Ananda Vikatan positively reviewed the film, giving it a score of A, equal to more than 50 out of 100. The film was a commercial success, running for over 100 days in theatres.

At the 28th Filmfare Awards South, Varumayin Niram Sivappu won the Filmfare Award for Best Film - Tamil, Balachander won Best Director - Tamil, and Haasan won Best Actor - Telugu for acting in Aakali Rajyam. Varumayin Niram Sivappu also won the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Film, Best Director (Balachander) and Best Actor (Haasan).
Pratap Pothen was cast in the role of an eccentric director "with an unhealthy obsession for an actress." He also revealed that director K. Balachander insisted that he dub in his own voice. S. Ve. Shekher who debuted in Ninaithale Inikkum (1979) and newcomer R. Dilip were cast in the role of Kamal Haasan's friends. Bharani, a poster designer for Balachander's films, joined the film as a mute artist at Balachander's request. The film was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Aakali Rajyam. Filming took place primarily in Delhi.
Varumayin Niram Sivappu became a trendsetter in Tamil cinema. Pratap recalled in January 2015 that it was the simultaneous release of Moodu Pani (another film featuring him) and Varumayin Niram Sivappu that made him a star. However, both Moodu Pani - which depicted Pothen as a psychopath who murders prostitutes - and Varumayin Niram Sivappu led to him being typecast in similar roles. "Both roles caught the public imagination, and I admit I cashed in when I was offered similar stuff. Now, unless I'm offered an unreasonable amount of money, I doubt I'll accept these roles," he said in a 2014 interview.
Varumayin Niram Sivappu, a satire on the unemployment crisis India was facing in the 1980s, revolves around the themes of unemployment and poverty in India, particularly for graduates. It also criticises "factional politics" as the root cause behind both problems.

Writing for Jump Cut, Kumuthan Maderya viewed Varumayin Niram Sivappu as belonging to the "angry young man" genre: one that rebels against establishment. The film also criticises bureaucracy, nepotism and red tape as major causes for unemployment and poverty in the country. Sujatha Narayanan, writing for The New Indian Express, noted its similarities to Nenjirukkum Varai (1967).

Too much negativity and bad luck...in this movie as well as Nizhalgal even by 80s standards. But this movie did have one good effect on me as a child. I resolved that I will NOT fall into poverty trap come what may. Be it the choice of professional degree over regular degree(that involved hefty student loan on my head), up skilling at right times...all this ensured I did not have to depend on an inner dilip or give in to pigheaded negativity or settle for a shit job for that matter 😀
