  • It was the end of an era as the Hawaii Martin Mars water bomber, flanked by the Snowbirds, made its final touchdown in Saanich, B.C. on Sunday. The plane was retired after the 2015 wildfire season and will now become a staple at the BC Aviation Museum.

why isn't it in service anymore? during a time like this when wild fires are everywhere this just seems stupid.

It is extremely expensive to operate and maintain. It requires a very special fuel mix as well. Modern jet bombers are far more effective.

@@donziperk im not arguing your statement, just thinking. Wouldnt it be more expensive to either build a brand new water bomber or even just buying a new one?

@@nevveran3280 Lots of retired air frames that can be converted to water bombers. And that’s just one plane, we need lots of them. It doesn’t make economic sense to have one plane that’s hard to get parts for and requires a special blend of fuel.

It was made in the 40s or 50s. It's absolutely massive. Takes way too long to fill up and take off. Smaller planes are much more efficient for the job. Also I don't think you could find a pilot crazy enough to fly that thing fully loaded these days. Hope this clears things up

@@TheWinstonDouble They actually fly beautifully but there are other issues the biggest being maintenance and the special blend of fuel they require which isn’t readily available.

Wrong. The worst ending is getting goddamn scrapped. Now she can be enjoyed by admirers and enthusiasts for generations to come.
