RIP Ron barassi u will be widely missed a afl legend involved in ten premierships a gentleman a generation of footballers were based around u mate rest in peace
The player wiping his face with a towel is Port Adelaide legend Russell Ebert. Recently I saw the player stats for the Roos in 1979. (1979 Prelim Final Footy Record) Ebert easily had the highest number of possessions of any Nth Melb player that season. Averaging 25 disposals per match. Not bad when you think this team had names like Schimmelbusch, Alves, Blight, Glendinning, Greig, Melrose & Cassin in it. Ebert was aged 30 & flew over from Adelaide every week to play. This guy was a champion !
🇭🇲♥️🇭🇲rest in peace Ronald Dale barassi. We will miss you. Thank you for giving so much of your self to our beloved game of football. You were loved. Rip. 🇭🇲♥️🇭🇲♥️
New to Melbourne and Australia, I was sitting in the MSAC cafe last week with a mate when Mr Barassi and his friend jokingly suggested they would join us at our table. I had no idea who he was but politely invited them to sit down with us. He just as politely declined and they sat elsewhere. My mate (who is a footy fan) filled me in on who our friendly visitor had been. Had I known, I would've let him take our table! He stopped and chatted with us again on his way out. What a gentleman!
Adam Ferguson I now understand why so many in the world decry the "youth" and their softness. As a young man, words like that pissed me off but they pissed me off to prove a point to the person SAYING them. But now, the person saying the words is wrong, even if those words are needed. I find myself now in a position of leadership wanting to be much stiffer than most would be able to deal with and having to check myself because of that fact. And it's then that little clips like this from Ron Barassi make me understand what the older generation means and meant. You barrel into those you have great appreciation for the hardest because you want to get the best out of them. Or at least you used to be able to. Now, I don't really know.
RIP Ronald Dale Barassi - the title of the Larry Writer book on the St. George Rugby League Club's 11 Premierships in a row sum up the great man perfectly........."Never Before, Never Again"........
Ron Barassi could approach it how he pleased cos' of RESPECT. If the players respect him they'll wear it and make the appropriate adjustments, both mental and physical, to their game. Simple.
reverse psychology is a very clever way to get the best out of your players and spark them into playing the football (the coach and the player in question) know they are capable of, there is no point being positive when players dont stick to the game plan or the team is losing, you must do something about it.
Those suggesting the year is 1973 are far from the mark. This video is approximately 1979 I'd say judging by the sponsor and VFL logos on the player's guernseys, and stripes on shorts (which cam in 1979). VFL logos on uniforms became the common way around 1976, and from that time for about 3 seasons following, North wore Courage beer logos on their uniform. This footage displays a different logo.
Barassi is an absolute football legend and the best coach of any sport australia has produced! I bet he could have coached a davis cup tennis team to a cricket world cup if he was asked!
If this really was North vs Carlton in 1973 and this happened at quarter time, Ron Barassi was acting like this when they were 2 goals up They were down at half time, could only imagine that locker room.
North Vs Carlton 1979..it says it on the intro picture ! Carlton were too good for all teams that yr. Won the Flag courtesy of Jezza's captain ~coaching …& a little help from Wayne Harms and a boundary umpire.
I play under 19s and we lost by 2pts to a team who had a record of 0wins 13losses we sit 4th now..the spray we got was the worst Ive ever seen...And very well deserverd its not only cause of the lost today its because we lost by 84pts to the top team last wee ks sum-thin going wrong..But yes *xtector* it sill dose happen..As a result we dident leave the room for 1 hour sat there quietly and a few of us cried of shame.
I knew it was in his first year coaching since I saw it on a documentary. He says 'Carlton small man' at 0:15 and you can get the match stats from afl(dot)allthestats(dot)com/?itm=111328&t1=10&inyr=1973&inrd=2

RIP Ron. Your passion enlivened the game. Your football nous still in play today. Farewell to a footy legend.

I've read your comment in the exact moment he was saying that
Maybe if he was a bit more clear which goal he was talking about ☺️
I’ve never heard a more Australian sledge than “Darrell, you are a F**KWIT”
To be honest, this clip makes me proud to be an Australian! 😂

it was always war with Barassi, he could have been a general in an army, and would defeat any enemy.

Vale #31, Ron Barassi.
They don't build 'em this good anymore.
Love this if only coaches had the guts to give a spray like this today
RIP Ron
Imagine talking to kids these days like that?? They would cry and want to leave....
Hahahaha
Adam Ferguson I remember a coach at my footy club had me in tears with a verbal spray. But I eventually shrugged it off. :)

Rest in Peace Ron. Give ‘em hell up there
But sadly he never honoured the Captain Coach...so he didn't get a guernsey. Make sure you honour Him.
Those were the Days.He Won Two Flags for the Roos with this Style of Coaching, bring it back it Works.love you Barass!!
Now days everyone cries when something like that happens
Last coach got fired for this and players folded
And lost 3.

Ronald dale barrassi excellent coach he was.
I'd have to laugh when I was some place where he couldn't hear me.
Ya got that, Darryl !! Good onyo, Ron ...
Unbelievable piece of coaching
That's BLOODY RIGHT
Just wondering what would've happened if one of the players interrupted Barassi to gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Top of the class.
Vale ❤
It has to be 1979 - one of the players shown early in the clip is Russell Ebert (went to NM from Port Adelaide, only played 1 season).
Ron Barassi could approach it how he pleased cos' of RESPECT. If the players respect him they'll wear it and make the appropriate adjustments, both mental and physical, to their game. Simple.
I agree ... think it's 1979, if not 1980. Ross Glendinning and Gary Dempsey were in shot.
It was 1979

This is what Carlton needs at the moment a could spray
Rip ron barassi
would love to know how they did in the second quarter that day.
This is what the current Kangas need, David Noble has now apologised for a spray … I’m sure Barassi would show these young blokes of today #supercoach

Darryt Shimmlebush maybe

chester65 I don't believe it was Wayne Schimmelbusch mate.
Darryl Sutton, who would have started the game at full back.
reminds me of my coach
Ah Barassi :)
