    This is my favorite performance of my favorite classical work. A youth choir. A youth orchestra. Two beautiful Swedish sopranos. A world class conductor. At the end of this people in the choir were crying. There were tears in the orchestra. The mezzo soprano was tearing up. So was I. Lovely.

    Such a pleasure watching this fantastic performance with you! I've sung this in an English choir at the Albert Hall and it's such an emotional experience. Your heart's going like the clappers and you have to start singing almost inaudibly. Quite difficult but the effect is beautiful.

      Since you've sung at the Albert, thought you might enjoy this. Some video I shot of the final rehearsal for the monumental performance of Havergal Brian's Gothic symphony. July 10, 2011. 990 performers. Four choirs, two boys' choirs, soloists, 3 offstage timpanists and brass, two orchestras. Concert was the following day. A landmark at the Proms. Good recording on Hyperion. czcams.com/video/D7NS6DOKf1s/video.html

    Any Mahler 2nd that has the chorus standing before the bassline of the Mit Flügeln tends to ruin the entire symphony for me... The choirs are to come in a mysterious manner and remain SEATED until that bassline near the end...

    • @rlosangeleskings
      @rlosangeleskings Před 11 měsíci +5

      I have conducted this Symphony almost exclusively my entire career as a conductor... The choir directors run afoul of me every rehearsal and it gets to the point where I have to mark in their scores when to stand... I fired two of them in the middle of a concert and started the whole Symphony from the beginning as a statement to them to never cross me up again...

    Okay, I'll indulge you: Yes, he did in fact complete 10 symphonies. His superstition about not being allowed by fate to compose more than 9, lead him to not give his 9th Symphony a number and instead call it "Das Lied von der Erde" without any Number. Then he wrote the next Symphony and gave it the No.9 and thought he had tricked fate.
    I wonder if he would have had renumbered "Das Lied" as his real 9th had he ever lived to see it and the folowing works published.

    • @intelligentdonkey
      @intelligentdonkey  Před rokem

      An interesting theory, and I've heard it before. He may have thought of Das Lied von Der Erde as a symphony, as did some others up to and through Bernstein in the 1960s, but like his 8th has no structure resembling a symphony. It's an absolutely gorgeous work, but despite its published title remains, for me, a song cycle. But then, his 8th (the "Symphony Of A Thousand") isn't really a symphony either by that measure, and we all still number it as his official 8th symphony. Oh, well.

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer Před rokem +1

      @@intelligentdonkey I big to differ. Both works have clearly symphonic structures.
      The 8th 1st Part is a big sonataform. And the 2nd Part is 3 Movements rolled into one continous whole: An Adagio, a Scherzo and a Finale all based on material from the first Part.
      And "Das Lied" opens with a Sonata movement again, then a slow movement, and then 3 intermezzi, some of them in the form of a scherzo and a slow Finale.
      It's as much, or as little a Symphony as the unfinished 10th is one.

  • @sashakindel3600
    @sashakindel3600 Před rokem +6

    Whether the 2nd is considered Mahler's best work depends on who you're asking. It probably has the most powerful mystique among general audiences, but if you ask people who are specifically Mahler fans what their favorite is, you'd probably get strong showings from the 9th, the 6th, and Das Lied von der Erde as well, with more occasional appearances from all the others. New listeners should by no means assume that it's all downhill from here!

    The third movement is an expansion of Mahler's song "St. Anthony of Padua Preaching to the Fish," which was inspired by a famous painting of the same title. It's from his song suite "Des Knaben Wunderhorn." Mahler never ascribed any particular significance to it beyond that. That's a glockenspiel at the beginning of the last movement. Bells, untuned, are used later in the movement. (Mahler did use the xylophone in the scherzo movement of Symphony 6.) This is a good performance, the alto singer in particular, but in almost 60 years as a Mahler devotee, I've heard many far better.

    If there is a heaven - if it doesn’t crash and ring like this glorious ending - it will be a huge disappointment. I think this ending beats out Bee’s 9th. I know that is sacrilegious…but this beats Bee’s 9th. In my opinion.

      It may be sacrilegious ... Beethoven's symphony is magnificent but does not have the dramatic and emotional punch in the gut or the urge to shed tears like the Resurrection.

    Mahler's 2nd czcams.com/video/rsn4SrnFxUw/video.html and 8th Symphonies! Klaus Tennstedt's cycle he did on EMI with the London Philharmonic Orchestra still remains my favourite. Bernstein's cycle with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra is great but once I heard Herr Klaus', I could not return to any other.
    If Heaven doesn't play Klaus' cycle, the most divinely majestic and German of all renditions, I am better off such a tasteless realm!
    Also try Gunter Wand's rendition of Brahms Second, in its most German rendition ever czcams.com/video/nKbRPewEMs0/video.html the way it concludes can only be done justly by Gunter Wand! His Beethoven and Schubert cycles are also excellent.
