Historically inaccurate for a number of reasons. One being that the soldiers that the Templars are fighting are supposed to be Danish Heathens. Most Vikings were already Christians by 1000 AD and the Viking age ended in 1066. Magna Carta was signed in 1215
@@ehudzechariahschmidt7036 Not Vikings bro, Danish mercenaries, Vikings were called like that because they were raiders, the danish in this film aren't raiding anything with the exception of the razing of the first castle we seen in the first minutes.
@@ehudzechariahschmidt7036 Maybe not, or maybe they were a group of untrained men from an unconverted region who King John abused and lied about leaving them alone, perhaps that explains why they are using such Viking age weapons and armors.
Say what you will for how this movie was filmed, the one thing I appreciated the most about it was conveying as realistically as possible just how violent and unforgiving the 12-13th century was in regards to warfare. These were truly violent times and with bladed and blunt weapons and bows, it got pretty gritty pretty fast. Also, torture and punishment was dealt out swiftly and brutally.
Iron Clad: what you get when choreography and cinematography don't play well with each other. Because I'm guessing there was really intense, kickass moments in this movie but I missed them because the camera kept jumping around every three seconds
That's the only way to make a fight scene feel exciting and frantic without having to hire competent swordsman or martial artists. If you ever watch a martial arts or samurai movie made in Japan or Honk Kong you'll notice that they don't need to use abrupt switches and cutaways to make an exciting fight scene because most stuntmen in that region are highly trained martial artists that can perform fight sequences flawlessly.
One of very few medieval time period movies with realistic violence, especially the moment where we see a man split in half from the drop of a broadsword. Most movies I've seen, especially the Hollywood ones with lots of big stars, are poor in comparison. The reason is, portraying what really happens when men hack each other to death is extremely violent and bloody, which means you can't get a 12 or 15 certificate so the audience is (theoretically) narrower. Go and visit the Tower of London's Armoury, or those of the many castles in the UK and Europe, and you'll understand when you see the real weaponsup close. It was a literal bloodbath.
I'm sorry, but cleaving an armoured opponent to the mid-section with even a two handed sword is nonsense. The power needed for a stroke like that would be far more than is within even a very strong human fighter. A lot of the other battle wounds carried realism though, like the hacked open skulls and severed limbs.
*The reason I love this movie is how much it does justice to how brutal medieval warfare really was.* This was a bloody and gritty Dark Ages war film before it was cool.
Whilst the narrative and acting aren't anything particularly noteworthy the fight choreography relating to bastard swords is a rare gem indeed. In 20+ years of study this is honestly o ne of the best depictions of medieval half-swording techniques that I've ever encountered in film. Pants film but the treatises have been surprisingly well researched for such a low budget film.
@mark houghton war was never this brutal. Definitely not back then. The way the weapons here completely cleave through people is a defiance of physics.
This movie was epic! One of my favorite Medival movies during this time period. The fighting was great, the actors fit their characters perfectly, and the plot was well done. James's character was portrayed very well and i loved his dedication to cause. A very humble man he was.
@Carlie Mckenna they're actually not vikings. Vikings had been gone for about over 100 years since when this battle took place. They're simply danish mercenaries. Only real difference visually with them and how the defenders would've dressed would've been their coats of arms.
There is a scene where the man whom the Baron saved from execution killed a Danish soldier by hitting with a severed hand. This is cut even in this video.
That is knights fighting pretty accurately showing a different attitude and mind set than soldiers. What would they do today on our battle fields full of assault rifles and high explosives. #provos #centurions #WW3stayscold #CIAisapimp
Great upload - nicely edited. Medieval warfare looks like hell on earth. I would have said the Muslims can have the Holy Land and King John can have the throne - I'm heading for the hills!
Authentic medieval battle doesn't come close to this at all. Everyone would fight in formation and losses would generally be much much much lower on either side.

Historically inaccurate movie - but the fighting scenes are fucking awesome.
The Comedian- Way I figure it, if it's going to be historically inaccurate, then at least the fights and gore are so worth it :)

It was to cover up the low-budget SFX and to be honest, they did a really good job.

I just can't enjoy this movie anymore after Lindybeige's review hahaha
Lindy can be so scathing about the historical inaccuracy in movies; from flaming arrows to armour which has no purpose and everything in between.
One wonders why these people bothered to wear armour, since a sword can slice them in two like a melon.
