  • The stone carving at Varanasi is very unique comparing it with other states in India. Carving is preferred on soft stone. The soft stone is also addressed as Gorara locally. Stones are brought from mines of Chunar and Shivpuri - Madhya Pradesh. The most appreciated quality of this stone is that it is available in a wide range of colours and is easy to carve. Bowls, plates and glasses are known products. Artisans carve a variety of products from soapstone. Lampstands, small bowls, jaalis, candle stands and decorative items. The most marketed and noted product of this kind is an undercut elephant.

Why is everyone commenting complaining about his working conditions? can't you just applaud the guys skills as a craftsman? typical of the generation X snowflakes of the day, I have several of these items I've picked up in charity shops for a few pounds and they never cease to amaze me the craft and workmanship that goes into them, I would have happily paid more than I did for them their ingenious work's of art.

Lack of ventilation, safety glasses, filter masks, open feet, high speed drill could easily destroy his left hand and the thumb. It is disgusting to see lack of OSHA type of authority monitoring these industries. He needs livelihood, he is not going to complain! Just look at the motor running the high speed router type device, the belt is absolutely open without any safety screening . One break, and the worker's face or eyes are gone in a second. I love my birthplace, I hate greedy self centered industrialists.
