This was the personal project of Ted Turner, Founder of Turner Broadcasting Network, who personally wanted to produce and present both sides of the story in as dramatic and historically accurate (i.e. Without Hollywood) context. So that audiences could truly appreciate the sacrifices made at this battle to end slavery and preserve the Union.

Yes one of the strongest parts of the movie. For me strongest moment was when general Armistead was asking about general Hancock, his old friend while he was dying. I saw a lot of war movies from different eras but this scene is written to my heart. Even for me as a non-american citizen it was a very strong scene as well as whole movie is unforgettable. Very good story (history is best scenarist) and perfect acting. Martin Sheen was incredible as Robert Lee aswell as Tom Berenger as general Longstreet.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

I'm a Texan. My ancestor was Gen.John Bell Hood. I can see both Union and Confederate had noble causes. I also believe that we shouldn't try to erase history but we need to preserve it so future generations can learn from it as we are. As I hold true to my southern pride I also show love for America

A noble cause? WOW!! And you put that in print for the world to see. The CSA's only cause was to maintain slavery so the rich could get richer. They cared nothing for humanity. Not only for the slaves, but the poor white who had to get killed fighting their battle. In all of history, the CSA's cause was one of the worst. By far.

I watched both the New York and UK tribute memorials on TV marking the 10th anniversary of September 11th attacks.
I was watching the UK memorial service when all of a sudden i recognised the music the brass band were playing!! I shouted Gettysburg!! It was fantastic!!
Both the New York and UK memorials were very touching and brought a tear to my eye.
R.I.P to all those that lost their lives and prayers to the families.
