That’s a good question. I don’t think there’s an exact science on how long one can wait to cut a limb off in order to save themselves. I know the sooner the better your chances are. Maybe Lee waited too long? Maybe he got bit or scratched while fighting through that hoard near the marshal house, and we didn’t see it? Maybe it’s simply that Clementine got her leg cut off soon enough to be saved, and Lee didn’t. Maybe it’s different for each person
It was because of her axe wound the infected blood wasn’t circulating around her body it was pumping out-that’s why she was pale. And AJ cut it off in time instead of days later like lee
