    This is probably the most useful lance guide I have ever seen. It doesn't just teach you the moves and how to use them, it teaches you the truth about lance theory and shows how to apply it in situ, even obscure master tech. I learned things about iceborne lance that even I didn't know as a lance main. Very well done.

    Ah, the whole. “boxer” mentality was just the kind of advice I needed. Was playing a bit too defensively like not using the clutch counter to follow monsters who attacks reposition themselves out of your range. This is great, thanks.

    There's a huge difference between using a weapon just to power through the game and mastering a weapon and trying to be optimal. I think Lance and Bow for example are prime examples of how playing the weapon optimally or at least, as intended, in the best way possible is a completly different game altogether. I'd say that playing Lance at this level is way harder than most weapons and also super specific to the Lance itself, especially the movement. Cool guide!

    I think Zinogre is the best monster in MHW to practice lance. He does a series of overhead slams which are quite easy to spot and will let you really practice using the counters. You can see a clip here at 3:30. If you successfully counter he will repeat that slam attack 2-3 times and you will feel like a god if you counter them all.

    I've been doing the rounds of the weapons as I have come back to Iceborne in celebration of Wilds being announced and man... I really missed out. As a greatsword main I felt right at home with the lance, being used to tackling then swinging with the greatsword made the guard and poke playstyle of the lance feel so natural. Hitting 6 perfect counter guards in a row is like crack, it is so unfathomably addicting.
    I feel I'm fairly competent with it but now I'm determined to stick with it and master it.
    When I hit my first perfect counter-claw, I fell in love almost instantly.

    This was very informative and a good watch! I picked up Lance two weeks ago, never played it before and I must say its awesome!
    It really clicked with me when fighting a Gold Rathian, just counter poke after poke, counter clutching her tail spins and eventually stabbing that meat cleaver off.. was pure dopamine.
    Its also surprisingly versatile in multiplayer, I often trigger flinch and clagger windows with pokes, counter clutch into wallslam or with Rajang, I often counter onto his arms, triggering his grab animation, but clawing onto his rear legs to avoid it, giving a free damage window to everyone else.
    Also dunking on cutting weapons when you're the one doing their job of cutting a monster's tail.

    Man, I love Lance! I was so tired of dying so I gave Lance a try. I'm still getting better, but not carting much anymore. As Dear Gamer says, "in Offensive Guard we trust!" And clutch claw counter, monster can't knock us off, means I can weaken a part anytime I want to! Bonus tip, for any fights too difficult, you can use your Lance build of high guard, offensive guard, etc on a HBG if you need to get through a certain monster, then right back to Lance again!

  • @TanegiHoneydew
    @TanegiHoneydew Před 6 měsíci +2

    Amazing guide, my fellow Lancer!
    I'd love to see more new hunters or returning ones picking up Lance too, they're so much fun when you finally understand how to play it.
    Nothing feels better than going in the zone with a monster and constantly trading blows for MINUTES without backing down! 😁
    (You do still need to back down from those icy floor breath from Frost fang and Velkhana though, they're aiming at your feet not your shield lol)
    Oh and one more tips I wanna share:
    Slinger Guard & Guard Dash will ignore medium knockback and treat it as small knockback.
    Some of the monster's attacks can pit you into an awkward position where you get knock back that's heavy enough to push you back slightly but still not powerful enough to let you transition into a Power Guard.
    So these 2 moves are perfect for those situations as you can chose to either hold your ground or reposition yourself.
    For example: Fatalis' downward Flamethrower (not cone) will give you a medium knockback. But if you hold your shield up in a Slinger Guard position with Guard 5 & Guard Up then you can just sit right under him safely for the entire duration and continue thrusting once he finished this move lol

      @jyugwat2952  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I was planning a lance tip video but you are stealing my tips!!! Shhhh!!!! (Keep posting more tips)
      I finally applied this guard trick at 8:56. I knew this move was possible but my habit is clutch claw counter out of regular guard with counter, but I could not do the trick for this video. I realized I had to guard with slinger guard and the secondary input for clutch claw counter to have low knock back for the trick to work. Fatalis really makes you learn the lance thoroughly.
      I can tell you understand the lance. Cheers my friend.

There were several moves in this video that I never knew about, despite having played Iceborne for a very long time, and I look forward to using these techniques in my game, because I really love the design on theLance and I wish I was better with it. @@ethanboone2816 what I do to learn positioning against tough matchups is watch speed runners. For your case watch raging brachy, regular brachy speed runs aren’t good for learning positioning. Power guard, and guard dash are your tools for positioning, sometimes they even face backwards for a moment, and realign their shield when the monster is preparing to attack again. Make a conscious thought on what guard they use to deal with what, when they chase, and when they let the monster approach.
      Second, sounds like you know blast is taking you out from being in position. Respect the blast and remove offence skills for blast resist. Staying in position far out-damages some attack boost or crit eye, or crit boost etc.
      Finally there are a lot of bad matchups in iceborne. I hate to say it but some monsters are really miserable to fight with lance and I wouldn’t even recommend it. For a long time I had to switch weapons to clear some fights, or refuse to fight with lance. I only now am returning to world and clearing some terrible matchups that I’ve never done with lance before, like furious rajang and AT velkhana.

    I do truly forget when I picked up the Lance. Through most of vanilla I was a thorough Hammer enjoyer knocking things over and betting my life with daring wind-ups and invincibility rolls. It was with Iceborne the monsters really began to become an annoyance. But once I just for the sake of giving the 'stick' a try, and seeing how you literally could just sit there in that impossible zone and *keep standing there after just raising your shield attack after attack* won me over fast.
    This video and its simple straight forward approach and music just appeals to that sense of ''Huh, wow.'' factor that first perfect block and instant retaliation towards the monsters felt like.

    I am a new player and Lance is my absolute favorite. I love how easy it is to mount with a Lance with the Dash Attack. When initiating a fight, I usually dash, mount it and knock it down for some series of pokes at the tail to break it easily later on. However I am very bad at using Counter Claw currently its so hard to control and it takes a while to get used to since the Claw speed depends on how fast you navigate through the buttons so I'm either super late or super early that my stamina runs out. I also never knew you can change direction while lunging forward so thank you so much for this information.
    Lance for me is very fun because you're mastering the only attack it has which is poke but using the shield to offensively block attacks to keep poking on enemies' face instead of waiting for attacks and being a punching bag like you said. Lance also increases your battle experience since it makes you learn the boss patterns as to which moves are safe to block and which moves need to be dodged. I really like how you make us think about boxing when trading blows with the boss head on. It really suits the Lance playstyle.
    Great video it motivates me to master this weapon because I tried everything else and nothing ever came close to Lance 😂

    First of all, I would like to thank you for encouraging me to continue with the lance.
    Monster Hunter World is my first and only Monster Hunter I have played. I bought it along with Iceborne during the PlayStation Store summer sale last month.
    I have about 86 hours of gameplay and I have completed the base game. I also started Iceborne and the next quest requires me to hunt the Barioth.
    This is all new to me, but I have to say I was having a blast until I noticed a considerable increase in difficulty.
    I have only ever used the lance since the beginning of the game, but now I am starting to feel frustrated when every time I try to complete a side quest, where I have to hunt even the weakest monsters of the base game, it still takes me about 30/35 minutes.
    I currently have a Hunter Rank 32 (Master Rank 6) and I use the Chromo Drill I. Could the fact that I have never mastered the counters be the cause of my ineffectiveness in battle?
    Taking more than half an hour to kill even a Pukei Pukei has become tiring for me. Especially because I have a good defense and I don't lose lives.
    It just becomes a battle of patience where I chase the monster, defend myself and land a few attacks. However, I do too little damage despite all the attack buffs.
    Maybe the difference is all in the counters and positioning. I've never felt this boxer feeling. I've always been used to playing as a tank, but I'm a newbie.
    I don't have friends to play with online, and I do everything by myself offline. I hope the MH community can give me some advice because at the moment I feel a bit lost.

      I was like you too! I didn’t have PSN so I only played solo, I took 20+ min for any monster, and I always timed out for certain monsters.
      As a veteran lancer my advice is… take a break! Watch some videos, have some lunch with your mom… then when you pick up the game again… even try a new weapon. As a beginner I did not ram my lance against every monster. I’d say my first play through was lance+sword and shield. Watch some videos, check your build etc. This might open your eyes to other mechanics in the game you might have been ignoring by using guard all the time.
      You are saying your hunts are taking a long time no matter how much attack you are building, you are building wrong! What kills the most time as a lance is missing a counter, then sheathing to heal, healing slowly with a mega potion, then unsheathing again. For a player like this, you do not need attack boost. You need health boost 3, guard 5, anything to keep you in the monsters face stabbing away.
      Finally…you said you’re always used to playing tank. Lance is not a tank! Your mentality should be the same as any other weapon: hit the monster any moment you can. With a greatsword this moment will be short, with a lance this moment will be very long.
      If you want to get better at lance try this: hunt great jagras without holding block. You are only allowed to use guard counter, power guard, and guard dash to protect yourself. You are not allowed to block “dry”. Then hunt pukei, then barroth etc.
      However my biggest tip is still to take a break! This could mean step away from the controller, or focus on another weapon. Maybe you will return to lance later and feel completely different. Thanks for watching!

Final Fantasy 14 taught me that every class is dps, and Monster Hunter is no different, because the support and tank weapons are often more powerful than the dps weapons like longsword and dual blades, with the added bonus of hunting horn buffing your team and lance being able to protect teammates directly behind it from certain attacks

      @jyugwat2952  Před 5 měsíci

      I’m actually not certain on the difference between guard 4 and 5, I have never tested it my myself. Generally Lance mains believe there is a big difference between guard zero, 1, 3, and 5.
      There are 3 levels of knock back when you try to counter.
      1. Fast counter thrust
      2. Slow counter thrust
      3. Block, but fail to counter thrust.
      The difference between counter thrusting and failing the counter thrust is huge for the lance, because it is a weapon that relies on the number of times you can poke rather than big damage numbers. You just need take a guard level that lets you effectively counter thrust everything the monster you are fighting throws at you. In iceborne master rank, Generally guard 3 is not enough. You will fail this counter 2:52 vs yian garuga, and fail to counter fatalis breath move at 10:59.

    • @jyugwat2952
      @jyugwat2952  Před 6 měsíci

      7:15 In the info tab of your pause menu you will find something called hunters notes where they list all the lance attacks including “dash attack” in weapon info.
      While you are running in dash attack, hold forward and press the dodge button and you will jump without stopping your charge. You can even press the thrust button and aim a mid air thrust for more damage (9:09)
      If you build up enough damage while mid-air (called mounting damage) you will begin a mount. Mounting damage for different weapons varies, with the lance you usually have to do this attack once or twice to get the mount the first time.
      Is that clear?

      In short, lance requires guard skills and sharpness skills to function. Upgrade your ironside charm whenever you can, and it should cover all the guard you need. I like the odogaron set mid game for sharpness, and teostra armour for later.

    • @jyugwat2952
      @jyugwat2952  Před 6 měsíci

      It's been a while but I'll give it a shot.
      When I mention "set" you'll have to google the armour set and set bonus effect yourself, and have a look at what it does. The following should be valid for all the weapons that use sharpness except for gunlance. ALWAYS take as much health boost as you can (max 3).
      Before iceborne:
      The general path for armour is anything with high defense until you can build odogaron set. Odogaron set should be good until you can get Teostra set. You only need to wear 3 armour pieces of Teostra to get Master's Touch: the best set bonus before fatalis.
      The path for weapons I recommend kulu yaku tree, or the furthest right weapon that has your elemental advantage. This should be good until you can get weapons from the nergigante tree.
      I think the paths are the same for master rank in Iceborne. At that point you should be able to decide on your own.
      This is the general path if you do not want to think too much, but you should take your time to discover which armour and skills you like yourself. Do not just listen to me or some guy on the internet. Good luck!

    • @jyugwat2952
      @jyugwat2952  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Guard up is required to block things like rajang beam, velkhana beam, teostra ulti, etc.
      I’m not sure the reason Reddit said don’t use it, i do not read Reddit. I like put it on always so I don’t ever worry about what I can or cannot guard.
      positioning and blocking will increase your damage far greater than a jewel slot. If something like blast resist lets you stand in brachydios face and continue poking, this will increase your damage more than crit boost. If flinch free lets you stand among your teammates to poke, this will increase your damage more than weakness exploit. If guard up lets me stand in rajang’s beam and continue poking him, I think that will increase damage more than attack boost.
      Not sure what Reddit means by that, but i don’t just listen to ppl on the internet…I need to understand the reasoning and apply it to my own game.

      I have a whole video about this on my channel.
      czcams.com/video/_owYPsj0e4Y/video.htmlsi=DYwW4bVoJNiIcpdl
      9:20 my theory is the devs of iceborne took the effort to balance lance, while rise sunbreak they did not. You feel like the guard is weaker because it is: monsters chip through your shield even at the maximum guard level. 2:42 The fact that this only works with guard 5 is intentional. lance killers exist in the game so that lancers cannot sit and guard everything passively. This is all intentional to promote the true style of the lance: to aggressively heal back the health you are losing to chip, with health regain augment. It is no mistake that these monsters that chip all appear after health regen becomes available.
      In rise it feels like they forgot about lance. What will you guard with G5 plus embolden? Nothing in the game needs you to stack both, because there is no intention behind it. No monster has lance killing moves. Sunbreak monsters behaviour is designed to punish counters of all the weapons by ridiculous combos and follow up attacks. What does this mean for Lance? Nothing. Instablock or just counter again. Because they did not consider lance. This is why the guard feels different.

    • @jyugwat2952
      @jyugwat2952  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Cont.. the reason you feel like sunbreak does more damage is because it does. I feel iceborne lance is a bit undertuned compared to other weapons. You need to know where your damage comes from to feel it, which is why it is so misunderstood as a tank and I try so hard to promote the lance.
      When rise switched to sunbreak they arbitrarily dialed up damage on leaping thrust, and instablock counter. Suddenly everyone started loving the lance.
      Great question! Thanks for asking!

    • @TanegiHoneydew
      @TanegiHoneydew Před 6 měsíci +1

      Lance was indeed a bit under tuned in Iceborne compared to Sunbreak, maybe Capcom was a bit paranoid of giving Lance too much power like Striker Lance in MHGU 😂
      That said, you can try fitting in more Charge Finisher Thrust!
      This thing really do a lot of work pumping your DPS up if you know when to sneak them in.
      Obviously, you should already chain it with Triple Poke whenever monster is downed/trapped.
      But sometimes you can sneak them in actual combat too.
      Like when monster flinches (but not clagger), they usually give you enough time to perform a short-range Charge Finisher on them as those monsters are trying balance themselves.
      Or sometimes you can do a predictive Charge Finisher too. If you know where the monster's head will be after one of its bigger attack then you can just sneak in a Charge Finisher before doing a Triple Poke.
      I have noticed my hunt time becoming quite a bit faster the more I can successfully squeeze in these attacks, hopefully they're helpful enough 😂

      It is so satisfying watching a speedrunner guard dash perfectly… it looks like they are stuck to the monster

      This is definitely something I've needed in my gameplay. Sticking to a mon from left or right has always been frustrating for me.

    I picked up the lance on a whim because I wanted to fight monsters a bit more defensively. However, I quickly discovered the sheer possibilities it had as an offensive weapon. I was an Insect Glaive main, and I found mountain with the lance so much more fun and actually landing the mount. Plus, she sheer hilarity of chasing down monsters while running with the lance is just great. The more I played it, the more I realized that it really is more like a boxer mentality. Sure, the shield can be a tank, but you can also use it to exchange blows without waiting behind the shield constantly. I admit, I haven't guard hopped, but I think it's what I've been looking for, being more mobile in the actual fight.

      This is exactly it.
      The lance is severely misrepresented and it’s a real shame that it is 14th in popularity. I hope Lancers can have a revelation like you, or non-lancers give the weapon a proper chance.
      Thanks for your comment! Thanks for watching!

    No wonder my counters seem off timing later in the combos. Didnt know guard 5 was so necessary.

      There’s basic controls in your hunters notes in game.
      Guard dash is movement, guard, and low thrust buttons pressed together.

    Can you do a gear guide progression for lance Iceborn? I am on the struggle bus.

      My best advice on this for a new player: make it a habit to review each new armour when it becomes available. If you do this gradually as you progress through the game, you will be able to make armour sets yourself.
      Copied from my answer to someone else:
      PS: The most important thing for lance is to build to allow you to stay in position. If you find you are leaving position to sharpen, you need sharpness skills. If you are leaving position because of blast blight, build anti blast. If you are leaving position to heal, build more guard.
      Good luck!

    How you get maximum stamina?

    • @jyugwat2952
      @jyugwat2952  Před 4 měsíci

      Eat a meal at the cantina before a hunt. If you cart you can raise it again by consuming rations or steak, or an ancient potion.
      The extended stamina bar you see in this video is only possible with the fatalis armour set bonus.
      If you find you need more stamina with the lance even after eating, I recommend building the skill guard.
