This album is another masterpiece!!!
Yes it is! Faith No More has not disappointed, they always bring so much variety to their music.
@@mollyesanborn they do😊
@@mollyesanborn The godfathers of Alt.Metal
@@mollyesanborn Do The Real Thing next! It was the first one with Mike Patton, they had all the music and he wrote all the lyrics in 10 days, which is crazy
I listened to this album for the 1st time in 2002-03, and it has been so much fun to listen to every time. It’s become almost like a friend :)
As a Brazilian I should inform that Caralho Voador means "flying d1ck". The percussion you noticed in that song, along with theguitar and keys remind of bossa nova, which is a Brazilian genre, it's like a softened samba. In the portuguese part he says "I can't drive and now my finger appears stuck in my nose". Some people state thathe got hisn song title from João Gordo, singer from Ratos de Porão (basement Rats, in a free translation), a punk band from São Paulo, when they hung out, though I couldn't find sources to confirm this information.
I love this album, and it seems the evolution of the two previous albums. Star AD and Just a Man are my favourite tracks, although I learned how to sing most of them, cause it teaches me a lot to sing great and difficult songs.
Bahahahahahahahahahaha what a name!
Hahahahaha, minha nossa cara, ela pronunciando esse título sem fazer ideia do que seja, é lindo isso.
I don't know why this album is so often overlooked in their catalog. It's got a lot of gems in it. My favorite is the Gentle Art of Making Enemies.
After Jim Martin left and their sound changed more, a lot of their fans who were more into metal felt alienated I think
@@jty9631 ironically this is thier most metal sounding album
My second favourite FNM album after Angel Dust
well i think is actually the favorite of the core in the fnm comunity, it got something to everyon, the one that is really overlooked is album of the year wich became little by little in a favorite of mine.
@@jty9631 i wouldn't say that but it has the most amount of flat metal songs
Seeing Patton tear up while singing king for a day at pinkpop was a great moment in music history.
Incredible performance! Thanks for reminding me; I'm going to watch it right now!
My favourite. So melancholic. "Don't let me die with that silly look in my eyes" is both my favourite lyrics and greatest fear! To not know you're the subject of the joke is heart breaking
FNM are such a clever band. They're all fantastic musicians and songwriters. Many bands have tried to copy them but none of them have come close to matching their sound. Supremely unique.
“Evidence” is a vocal MASTERPIECE
Forget vocal masterpiece. The whole damn song is a masterpiece!
it's MUSIC MASTERPIECE, not only vocal
‘The Real Thing’ was the first album with Mike Patton on vocals. It’s probably a good one to listen to next. Again, expect the unexpected.
I can't wait for her to listen to "Epic". The coda is gonna blow her mind.
Great suggestion!
My favorite, maybe all time favorite cd
The Real Thing is pretty straightforward tbh
100% guy can do so many different voices
I bought this album when it came out and still listen to it regularly. It’s on my list of “Will Never Get Sick Of” albums.
Album of The Year is an underrated masterpiece. Just move forward from here. After AOTY check out the first Tomahawk album for a real left turn.
Tomahawk has three of my favorite musicians of all time. I couldn't get enough of Helmet, FNM, and The Jesus Lizard. I think I did a double take when I first read about them ganging up. I would also add _Peeping Tom_ to the list.
the expression on your face when you said, what even was that? towards the end of Ugly In The Morning, where Mike sounds like he's swallowing his tongue, had me rolling...Evidence, Ugly, and Just A Man are standouts for me, they're an awesome band and Mike can pretty much do it all, crooning to screaming his lungs out
Not sure if anyone mentioned, but this is the first album without Jim Martin on guitar. This is also the only album featuring Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle on guitar. Trey is a bit more capable in other genre's than Jim, who is mainly a thrash metal loving guitar player. Trey does funk, jazz, experimental, country, surf, thrash, death, punk, classical.... He's a genius on Patton's level.
it's a shame he didn't like touring and didn't stay with the band.
After that - FNM was NO MORE
@@lellamas2778
Trey loves touring. He didn’t stay with the band because they didn’t treat him as an equal member of the band. They really did him dirty
On Caralho Voador, that is Portugese. He's fluent in several languages; look up the translation of that line btw! You'll laugh. I like this record, though my two favs are still Angel Dust and Album of the Year. Standouts for me are Ricochet, Star A.D., Digging The Grave, title track, and The Last to Know. The piano line in "Evidence" is so, so elegant too. For the next record - brace for impact on the opening song so you don't get startled- it just starts with no warning. Awesome to see you covering FNM's discography!
One of the best albums of all time.
King For A Day was the single greatest song I’ve ever heard live. Olympic Park in Melbourne 1995 at the Alternative Nation music festival. 35degC, humid wet day & at night the rain had stopped at Faith No More put on one hell of a show. Steam coming off the crowd.
. I’ve never gotten to see them live, even though they’re one of my favourite vans. I did see Mr bungle at waves in Wollongong though, and that was absolutely amazing gig.
Was at the Sydney Alternative Nation gig at Eastern Creek......absolutely amazing. The mud, the blood and FNM with Patton howling.
I was there too. How good was it Primus, Tool, Ween Bodycount etc. Never see another gig like that again. Only disappointment was Trey not on the bill for FNM. I’ve been blessed to see them live 5 times.
angel dust is considered to be one of the most important albums of all time due to its impact and influence to modern music, but king for a day is their best album in my opinion.
absolutely
100% I love this album, the gentle art of making enemies really made me love FNM.
Correct + I agree
Such an amazing album.
That’s one thing I think people are missing these days.
Playing an album start to finish.
FNM were the kings of making an album cohesive, like a journey.
You are awesome btw. Intriguing and fun, quirky and cute.
I love hearing the journey that all of these albums take me on, I agree that a lot of the focus these days seems to be on singles when they drop. No problem with that but I think the entire album is often overlooked for that reason. But anyway, glad you're enjoying the channel :)
@@mollyesanborn i prefer 'King for a day' even more than ' Angeldust', it sounds very organic, you can listen to it without skipping any song, all are killer!
@@mollyesanborn i know only two bands with such a broad range, FNM & Bloodhound Gang, they can make funny beautiful songs and the same time put something very aggressive and evil on the albuM)
I loved your reaction to the tracks on King For A Day...Fool For A Lifetime. Your analysis of the music is fun and accurate. Loved your reaction to the Angel Dust album also. Billy Gould's bass tone on this album is SO good - full of harmonics, nice and 'burpy' sounding, and well recorded.
I love FNM and your reviews!
Greetings from Buenos Aires
Yeah they're such a great band! Glad you're enjoying the channel :)
Also, would be interested to hear your thoughts on Mr. Bungle’s ‘Disco Volante’. It’s quite a ride…
There's a live concert version on CZcams of Just A Man where Mike Patton starts climbing the overhead camera and the crew has to just go with it 😂. It's pretty chaotic.
this is the first time i see your channel!
You are so beautiful and I love seeing people discovering new music and sharing that moment.
Greetings from Chile!.
(Probably one of the countries where Faith No More is most popular).
Gentle Art is SOOO UNDERRATED by the general public. The lyrics, music...ALL OF IT.
Excellent choice
I love this album. For a metal band, this is my favorite of theirs
theyre NOT a "METAL" band, never were
@@NuevaRomay with how often they played with genre, sure. But they’ve got a sound that doesn’t necessarily resonate with grunge or 90’s alternative, but more in line with metal bands that came after. But music is music, and it’s all good to me
@@cobaltfalcon9458 They’re really not a metal band. They do have metal songs and ofc heavier instrumentation with a lot of their songs. But they’re just so much more than that. They’re an amalgamation of branches of genres they’re influenced by. That’s what makes them so special.
@@cobaltfalcon9458their genre is Faith No More
Rcommended for next FNM chapter is ‘The Real Thing’. I really enjoy seeing your reaction from opening this pandora’s box of a band. They’re absolutely sensational. Warning: first two albums is with a different singer, Chuck Mosely. Tueneless but with tons of attitude. I love his style, but it’s an aquired taste. Enjoy the ride, cuz it’s a deeply thrilling one 😊
just discovered your channel, i'm loving it! it's great to see a young person going through such a rich, and diverse back log of artists. I hope you cover the first Mike Patton FNM album next
Minha banda número 1.
Amo tudo do Faith No More
Rock n Roll 🎸🇧🇷
This album is perfect!!! The song "King for a day" is my favorite. Mike sings many octaves on this song. Truly amazing.
Faith No More never disappoints
I love this album so much... Its timeless.. Thanks Molly
I wish I could hear this album for the first time again. This was in my daily rotation for a very long time!
This is so much fun! They sound way different than their radio hits. Very interesting. Especially checking out Patton's other bands. Enjoying this. Great dive!
in the early 90s my wifes car had a tape deck that broke with this cassette in the tape drive - now it was an auto reverse deck so it played over and over till that car died . listened to this lp a LOT . its a great great great lp . its not really a one trick pony but it has a strong cohisive feel . if you are a patton fan - all his work is great except his hip hop . fantomas and bungle tomahawk and dead cross- incredible music . keep goin with the patton stuff , its worth it . dont miss out on the side stuff like zorn ,buckethead , melt banana, sc3 , locust , melvins , etc .
I am a big Mike Patton fan, bought this album the day it was released, it is great to see people listening to them for the first time :) lots of cool Patton stuff to get in to out there!
As a long time fan, I think the differentials between this album and Angeldust can be contributed to three big factors: They seperated from Jim Martin and brought Trey Spruance in for the guitars on this (which didn't end well, from what I understand; There were payment / royalties issues - Patton has said "Don't bring your friends from your old band into your new band" before), another major factor was that Roddy's father was dying and he was absent from a lot of the song writing - this was a big Billy Gould album, and lastly this is a good representation of Mike expanding his vocals away from the nasal sound he was known for previously (Mr Bungle, and the other FNM albums he made with them - he started the variations and exploration on Angeldust for sure, but this was a big change for him, imho). This is my favorite FNM album, if I had to choose. :)
Beautiful album. Angel Dust was a Masterpiece and King for a Day is just as good. As you know of listening to Michael Patton's music, you can't categorize them at all. The minute you think you can pigeon hole them, they completely surprise you. Angel Dust was diverse of an album from a well known radio/played band that you could ever want. Patton himself is a poet and a lot of his lyrics can be taken in multiple ways as I've come to realize they can have multiple meanings or sometimes just be about exactly what he speaks of, it makes Patton a great lyricist.
Glad you liked the album, for those who are expecting a straight forward rock album from Faith No More, after their first 2 albums, that's just not going to happen. It's also what made Faith No More What they are b/c of their diversity(and no I don't mean an Old Wooden Ship..."Ron"),talent, and creativity. If you want more of a rocking Faith No More, their first 2 albums "Introduce Yourself" and "The Real Thing" are those and they are just as good, also Chuck Mosley was the lead singer for Faith No More before Mike, so "Introduce Yourself" has a different vibe to it, but it's still a great album as well, especially for the time it came out during the evil "Butt-Rock" era of 80's hair band crap music.
Awesome! They've been on my radar for awhile now but I've never dove in.. your vid changed that, thanks! Right up my alley
Mr. Bungle California Screaming with Mike Patton is a goldmine.
Your reactions, like Faith No More, never disappoint. Brilliant stuff.
My favorite Faith No More album! One of the most influential albums on the Nu Metal genre, from Slipknot to System Of A Down to Incubus.
One of the best albums ever made
This album is one that I love plus brings great memories from my youth 🔥💜
Edit: Their next album "album of the year".. It's also awesome but check out the version of it that has the cover song "I started a joke".. Originally a Bee gees song I think.
I had to do an art project in college where we picked a song, and portrayed the mood or message of it in visual form, with three different drawings/paintings etc. “Just a Man“ by FNM was the song that I picked.
my favorite faith no more album!!! i think this is their final magnum opus, with a little bit of everything.
10:52 Yep, Molly!! That's Portuguese, he's actually saying: I can't drive, now it appears, my finger stuck in my nose. Lol!
So, just so you know, Their first album is NOT fronted by Mike Patton, It's front by Chuck Mosley, and is called We Care Alot, Introduce Yourself was their second album, also fronted by Chick Mosley, and their 3rd album THE REAL THING was the one which began the Mike Patton years of Faitn No More. It should also be noted that Courtney Love (singer of Hole) also sang for Faith No More for a short period of time. You should go ALL the way back to We Care Alot and listen to how they progressed over the years. Chuck was a great front man for Faith No More in his own right, and though I am a much bigger fan of Patton and all of his work, we would not have a Patton for any of the stuff we know, if Chuck Mosley didn't help put Faith No More on the map with their moderate hit We Care Alot. W had to have that in order to GET to the Mike Patton years. I do wonder, had it not been for Faith No More, would Mike Patton have made waves either way? Cause it was Faith No More that got Mr. Bungle on a major Record Deal, and it was Chuck Mosley that got Faith No More to the level they were at when Mike Patton took over. Can we thank Chuck Mosley for all Mike Patton's success?
Bought the Cd when it came out.
Saw them & ment them. got in for sound check. At the front all the way through. What a day 👍
I always think it's cool when young people like the music I grew up on!
If you go one further, you have the last of their classic period, and my personal favorite with Album of the Year. If you go back, you have the first with Mike Patton, The Real Thing. Technically, you can't go wrong in either direction.
dear molly, i highly recommend going back and listening to the first faith no more album, "we care a lot".
their first vocalist, chuck mosely, was the opposite of patton - but still so good in a whole different way.
he was raw, rough, and full of emotions.
it's a great debut album, one of my favourites as a die hard faith no more fan.
by the way, chuck also realeased a great solo album, "will rap over hard rock for food" - also worth a listen.
These guys are amazing songwriters that have a vast palate to choose from. Ive listened to this one soany times i could never guess a number. Classic shit right here.
Caralho Voador is Portuguese for "Flying Dick" there's also a spoken Portuguese part of the song "Eu não posso dirigir
E agora aparece
Meu dedo enterrado
No meu nariz" which translates to.. not really sure honestly XD, something to do with driving and picking your nose. I do know that Mike Patton is fluent in Portuguese and FMN has done the song "Evidence" where Mike has sang the whole song in Portuguese at several of their concerts
Love your thoughts on this amazing album! You really, really seem to get the heart of the individual songs! It's such an eclectic album, and you just rolled with it!
I have to say it's great to watch someone listen to the music that I've loved for so many years. You have great observations. I don't know if you are a musician but you have a musicians ear for sure. That and a great ability to put your observation into words. It's great to see the new generations discovering the diamonds from the bones of my favorite music.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words. I'm not a musician, just absolutely LOVE listening to music. I'm so glad that you're enjoying the videos :)
Apart from the astounding songs and performances, I just want to point out Andy Wallace's production on this thing. Like RATM first album, Chilli Peppers' Blood Sugar, this record is really a landmark for both rawness and clarity in the mix. Somehow he managed it with a far denser sound and arrangements than either of those two I mentioned. Great that it was also the best record by maybe the best band of all time, a real perfect storm.
For me this is one of the 3 top albums ever. Saw them live for the first time in 1995 on the tour for this album. They started with Ricochet which already sold them to me, but the most chilling moment ever in a concert was when they did King for a Day, dragged that atmospheric ending out forever and then directly went into Epic, which really was a very epic moment. Never been so blown away and satisfied at the same time in a concert before.
To give an impression of how they were live at that time, this is from this tour, just a few days before the concert I was on: czcams.com/video/quvJJWL4wwU/video.html
"The last to know" BEST song ever
El album que me acompaña desde mi adolescencia y ya tengo 40. Saborear todos los estilos por los que incurre sabiendo que solo ellos pueden conseguirlo de tal manera.
Probably the biggest difference between this album and Angel Dust are 2 factors:
1. Jim Martin their longtime guitarist quite after AD and in this album was replaced by Patton Mr. bungle bandmate Trey Spruance.
2. Roddy Bottum their keyboardist was absent for most of the recording thanks to being affected by the deaths of his father and Kurt Cobain.
I thought the guitarist on this album was Dean Menta?
@@tonyschannel7438 nope, Menta played in the Tour when Spruance decided he didn’t like the touring schedule. He did started writing some stuff for the next album but the guys weren’t feeling it
This is interesting to me; I've always thought that Martin was fired, he didn't quit (rumor was they fired him via fax). And also Spruance seperated from them because the other band members refused to give him an equal share of their profits, and treat him like a full band member, against Patton's wishes). I haven't read anything about him not liking the tour schedule ... ? Do you have any other insight to these factors? I would love to dig deeper and find out more! :)
@@jbfranz7376 Martin was fired, he didn’t like the direction they were headed especially on AD. His Dad was unwell and he wanted more time off and apart from 2 tracks on AD had no input. Patton also despised him personally. The truth on Trey leaving may be grey but lies somewhere in between Trey getting treated like ‘caca’ and for not wanting to tour after recording KFAD.
Loved your reaction! This is my all time fave album!
Amazing! Love these videos! I told the drummer a few years back that this was my favorite album and he was a little taken aback!
King for a day - brought memories and a tear to me eye. 2001 was a massively upturned year for me - but in the end - cleansing and uplifting
Thanks for bringing these good memories, Molly!
i want you to react “Album of the year” next. i feel the three albums are like trilogy.
Really enjoy your reactions & facial expressions...also really liked the Smooth Jazz vibe of Evidence
Masterpiece❤
Mike's vocals on Evidence are smooth as silk
I loved your "review" KFAD is an all time favorite to me. Fantastic job!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! :)
I'd recommend The Real Thing as your next stop on they Faith No More train. Totally with you on the big, wide open, expansive sound on The Last to Know. That song gives me chills. The guitar tone on that song is fantastic too. There is nothing too crazy going on with it, it's just very forward and present in the mix.
Thanks really enjoy how you break down an album. Keep up the good work
carallrro vudor its my favorite track
If "Around the fur" had never existed, this record would probably be my favorite. A very close second place. By the way, a fun fact: track #7 "Caralho voador", Mike is singing (some parts) in brazilian portuguese. The tune has a little Bossa Nova in it, feels like. Oh, the song name literally means "Flying dick", lol...
This is the first cassette I bought when I was a teen, defined my life so much lol
Your reviews are the best! In my top 2 favorite reactors
. Listening to my favorite tunes with you on this page is awesome for me. The face you make when an amazing vocal or riff is the coolest smile eva. Keep it up. I'm SUPER curious to see your crosses "Vivien" review. 🖤🖤🖤
Oh boy! I'm all in and i just discovered this channel 2 seconds ago. #swoon
yesss nice one Molly, great album, and an awesome review. I'd say either go back a couple of albums to The Real Thing, or one album ahead to Album of the Year. Or scratch that and review a Mr Bungle album XD keep it going we love to hear your opinions xx
Ooooh this is my all time favourite album, great to hear some one else's opinion. King for a day is my favourite and I hope to cover it one day but mike is haaard to copy! The bass sound is the glue between all fnm albums. Enjoy! Subbed
I initially didn't like this album as much because it lacks the strong keyboard presence of Angel Dust, but it definitely grew on me over the years to where I now consider it a masterpiece. This album also has a ton of great b-side songs that didn't make the cut, like "Absolute Zero" and "Greenfields", which I feel are every bit as good as the songs on King For a Day.
Someone may have already mentioned this, but I was told by my guy at the local music store that this album was intentionally NOT over produced to make it sound more raw. The feeling of this album, and the tracks of course, are in direct alignment with what Mike was going through during his divorce at that time. That's just what I was told back then when I purchased this amazing piece of work in 1995. The words on a lot of these tracks speak truth to this trivia (well, this info may be trivial to some, but I've always listened to it with that knowledge). Either way, this is one of FNM's greatest in my opinion. Although, I do love them all (well, not the latest one so much). And Molly, you did an excellent job, as always, of breaking down the sound and your feelings about the album as a whole. Keep up the great work!
I think every one of their albums eclipses the previous. AOTY is even better, so... don't give up on Sol Invictus just yet. It took me a few listens to really appreciate how they've seasoned during the years they were apart. It's really a great album.
Another favorite album of mine. Take this bottle is a great song to hear and feel. The lyrics I can wait to love in heaven just hit me cause I've felt that way many times in my life. Great reaction.
This album took a while to grow on me when I listened to it but after a while it became my favorite FNM album
Good tho hear your thoughts as always. 😊
I recall not liking this a whole lot when it first came out, but it grew on me. I do miss Roddy’s keys though and they’re considerably less prominent on this album (he was away for much of its recording due to personal issues).
It’s interesting that you mention nu metal and SOAD as this album was hugely influential to both. The follow up “Album of the Year”, IMO is better than this and definitely worth a listen at some point, but your next port of call should be “The Real Thing” which is a classic.
Great album review. King for a day is my fav track. I hope you carry on with Faith no More, Mike Pattern joined the band on their third studio album "The Real Thing". So many great tracks, my fav is "The Real Thing", it also includes a great Black Sabbath cover of "War Pigs" Ozzy loved their version, he also performed it live with them in 1990 with James Hetfield.
Super glad that you like Faith No More, another fun and entertaining review:)) And coincidence or not? I like how the color of your t-shirt always matches the main color on the cover of the rated FNM album( Angel Dust-blue) ( KFAD-red) :))
"Album of the year" next please!:))
I suggest Album of The Year next. Also based on how much you like FNM and Mr Bungle check out Ween, they offer variety of sounds and styles and probably one of the most under rated bands out there.
Yep Ween is a must
My favorite FNM album. Their previous guitarist from Angel Dust had left and Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle came in to fill the spot for this album, and it shows.
Would love to see your reaction to the band Tomahawk, which consists of Mike Patton and the guitarist from The Jesus Lizard. Would also love to see your reaction to The Jesus Lizard - the juxtaposition of the tight guitar riffs and wild singing style of David Yow is just *chef’s kiss.* They fit more into the math rock / offbeat punk style that you often react to with DEP.
For Tomahawk, I’d recommend starting with the debut album, and for The Jesus Lizard, I’d start with the album Shot.
Love your videos! It’s so fun to listen to these tracks that I grew up to through new ears.
Love your intro lol 👍
I'm not sure if it's video material, but since I was reminded of it, I recommend giving "Folio A: Book of Souls" by Secret Chiefs 3 a listen sometime. SC3 is headed by the guy who played guitar on this particular FNM album. It's nearly all instrumental (and excellent), but there is one song, if you think you've heard everything from Mike Patton.
Amazing album. Their best. Excellent commentary and observations.
Wish i could give this a million thumbs up.
One of my favorite FNM albums and it was cool to see a fresh perspective on it. This actually makes me think I've kinda slept on a few tracks near the end of the tracklist so I'm going to give the whole album another listen soon.
I think Dog Fashion Disco is perfect to do after this reaction. So you can hear the Mike Patton influence. I'm still trying...lol I think the Sweet Nothings album would be a perfect starting point that truly shows how much they can play with so many genres. I haven't asked in a long while but I love your reactions and I'm convinced you will love them and end up down a great rabbit hole. I gotta at least keep trying. I hope it will still happen like you said. Great reaction and I will always keep watching either way.
Masterpiece!!! ❤
Jesus I am old, this were my teen years.
yes,the lyrics on caralho voador is on portuguese, keep the good work, love FNM,cheers from Portugal
Cool review! I also enjoyed Angled Dust review and Weezer reviews. As for the next Faith No More album to review, I reccomend The Real Thing from 1989, it's one of their best albums, totally different than Angel Dust & King for a Day, but still mind blowing.
You really have an excellent ear for production details.
Aw thanks! I try my best :)
Angel Dust blew your mind? First of all, congratulations on popping your Angel Dust 🍒. Nice to see that record is still blowing minds 31 years later. Second, welcome to the wonderful world of FNM. And lastly… as a former music snob who’s now just getting old (beware - it’ll happen eventually, kiddo), who has read enough music reviews in my life to last several, I watched a few of your videos (and then a few more) and like many other folks, I’ve noticed that you’re very good at all this (…you also have good taste in music - you reviewed MBV’s Loveless for Christ’s sake). So if it makes you happy - keep it up! If I had a website or ran a publication, I’d certainly hire you to review music & media. Anyway, glad you’ve hopped on the FNM bandwagon & again, keep up the great work!
Love Faith No More. Start from the beginning. All their stuff is awesome
