- The 1985 Olympus OM-40 Program, is a camera that I have been looking to get my hands on for a while. This smart 35mm SLR was probably one of the best consumer film cameras ever made, and it's turning in to a favourite of mine.

thank you for explaining how this camera works :) I am trying to make my first experience with film cameras on this one ^^
Well you've picked a great one to start with. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@John Burgess It's on my radar but I don't own one yet. It does seem an awesome camera though.
me too, got it from a friend a few days ago :) thanks lad
Got that camera for 20 bucks on a flea market today. Im glad that I found your review as its my first vintage camera 👍
Glad I could help! Enjoy your purchase.
Thanks heaps! First time using this camera or any film camera and was very helpful !
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad it was of use. Enjoy your new hobby.
Many thanks for this useful vid. I just bought sn OM40 off Ebay a few days ago and looking forward to taking fotos with it. I also bought a Yashica FX-D Quartz and was following your vid on replacing the leatherette / skin on the camera. Tq !
That's great. I'm really glad to hear my videos are of use.
Thanks for the great video! What does 'R' button near the shutter do? Does it matter if it is pressed down or up? Thanks in advance
Hi Max, glad it was of use. Thanks for watching. The R button is to release the film before winding it back. When the exposure counter indicates the end of
your roll of film, press the "R" button. Fold out the rewind crank and wind it until the film tension is released. Open the camera back by pulling up on the
rewind knob and remove the film. I hope this helps.
I found 1 in my local shop with F.Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f1.8 for around 195 euros. I think is a bit higher budget but i really like what the camara offers and since i like to shoot low light i think is a good option with this lens and higher iso film. What is your opinion?
If the camera is in good condition or has been refurbished then I think that's a fair price in the current market. The lens is a good one and I'm sure you'll be happy. Good luck with your shooting and thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video and explanation. I have one that I'm testing without film. When I'm setting to P mode, min aperture on 35-105mm zoom lens, ESP mode, the viewfinder is always showing "P" and "-1" regardless of shutter speed dial ring position ( from B to 1/1000s) 🤔. Strange. In manuel mode or auto mode, camera is reacting normally.
Could you please advise what could be the reason for that.
Thank you in advance.
I'm really not sure. Hopefully there is someone near you that can help, as it's usually a great camera.
the shutter speed dial with be ignored when in P mode, it only has an effect in manual mode. It should show the shutter speed the camera is going to use, I suspect the -1 is saying there isn't enough light and the shutter speed will be longer than 1 second.
The shutter speed ring also has no effect in auto, as it's an aperture priority camera, you change the desired aperture, the camera decides on the shutter speed. Try to keep it above 1/the focal length of the lens as a rule (so a 50mm = 1/60th, 200mm = /250) to reduce shake.
I can't check, my OM40 has no batteries at the moment.
edit, reading the manual, the pictures don't show a minus symbol, only a 1 with a downwards triangle for 1 second or slower.
Nothing in the manual's questions and answers section about a -1 symbol.
Just got one of these cam and crank winder is locking I don’t really know why ?
Do you mean on the take back spool or the film advance?
Hi, which battery was it? Thank you for your good video!
It takes 2 x LR44 batteries. Thanks for watching.
@@sccjono thank you very much
SR44 batteries last longer.
