Ok, for those of you who are not up-to-date with the situation, ToT had some bad stuff happening with his in-laws, so he has written on Patreon that he is taking a little break. Will be back ASAP.
Hey thanks for the info. Its exactly why i was going through the comments.

Thank you Gozz. It must be pretty serious as Tony loves making his videos for us.. I hope all is well for him and his family. I know it isn't always great, but I wish him the best.

@@lastofthebest5102 like what's your understanding here? That any service, series or show that comes to an end is inherently bad? @@lastofthebest5102 pretty uncalled for dude. You don’t know if CZcams is his only source of income and his finances are completely irrelevant. @@lastofthebest5102 Alright buddy. TOT is a guy that just barely hit 1 mil subs while uploading about 1 video a month. That's pretty obviously not paying the bills. It's a side project. @@christoph72761 I've got eight fingers and two thumbs, better suited for binary based calculations with a convenient carry. Base 4 or base 8 would make more sense than base ten.
@@1djbecker - Neither base 4 nor base 8 are particularly nice in terms of factorisation. Base 12 would be ideal (duodecimal metric). Also, an extra thumb on the other side of each hand would be really practical. Genetic engineers, get to work.
Community college Metrology instructor chiming in with a pedantic nitpick/GD&T observation: The flatness inspection not only assumed the granite was flat, but also the bottom of the vice is perfectly flat and perfectly parallel to the inspected surface. Legally, a parallelism check was done, not flatness. Without a CMM or a granite with a hole for an indicator, you would need to get the vice up on jacks or shims and start tweaking out the error if you truly wanted to inspect Flatness. It's exercises like these that really drive home the differences in GD&T controls for students.
Love your videos and sense of humor, TOT, please feel free to wave me off as one of those crazy quality control road blocks. Also, a Mitutoyo straightness master was around 5k last time I got one for my lab, and that's without a reference block.
I don't think you have included the random movement of the atomic structure of cast iron molecules in your calculations,,,looser! ;>) (joke)
Don't ya put the vice up on 3 points and then indicate the top? Thus establishing a more true flat plane of the granite surface not so much effected by the bottom of the vice surface
@@bnbnb6 - That's how you indicate the *bottom*, with the premise that the 3 points are in a plane parallel to the granite. run your indicator on the bottom then, and any variation is a variation in flatness of the bottom.
Assuming flatness of the plate, or at least a stable reference, wouldn't it be more accurate to keep the plate from moving and find the flatness mathematically?
Isn't flatness independent of how canted one way or another it is, just whether it could in principle be tilted to be flat- i.e. it lies In plane.
If the table was flat but not level, would still work, lack of flatness would ruin everything.
Weird chicken and egg problem right there, I guess that's what the 3 plate lapping thing was for?
If you took multiple measurements all over the piece then you could fit some kind of linear model to that, and then do a good was of fit measure(R^2 or something) to get the linearity of the surface, and hence its flatness.
would you have some CZcams video recommendations for that?

He's at 1m subs. Kurt, send this man a GOOD vise. He deserves it, and it'll make me like your company more. It's just a small vise and it feeds ToT's vice.
After watching every video ToT has made, like almost all of you surely have, there is prolly a method to this genius madness.
And you might have hit the nail on the head ! This is ToT’s wake up call to Kurt !! He will prolly have a few vices on the fed ex truck arriving at his home, from Kurt, at the 1,000,000 subscriber milestone !
@@yzmoto80 I went ahead and emailed Kurt and mentioned not only ToT, but the subscriber number as well as a brief summary of the video.. recommended they sponsor ToT with a free vise or two as it's a very small investment for their company/books, but the potential gains of 1m-subs is fairly massive :D
Let's see if they go for it
I see what you did there...
Does Kurt really need it? It is basically the default choice of a vise for anybody who wants to best mid price vise before the price jump to $3000 Orange type vises.
@@danl.4743 It's not that they "need it", 90% of the companies that sponsor YT channels don't "need it", but more sales is just that, more sales.
And companies spend a LOT of money every year on maintaining and/or improving their image with consumers, which is why YT sponsorships are rampant.
So they don't need to do it, at all, but it wouldn't hurt and may well get them another 15-20 orders out of ToT's roughly million subs.. And may get a few people even talking about the company, like we are right now, which is free advertising.

Oh I bought a vice off eBay, £50, 9" when I was really just starting out. What that thing needed was something next to it for scale, like a house... Being 6ft 9" I can lift it, about the height of the back of a van, once. And it makes the performance difference when in the van, down hill it seems quicker, breaks caused a large bang if applied hard although the van struggles to stop a few football fields further than it used to, hills also seem to be considerably longer. I worked out that the reason for the vans breaking issues was that the vice's mass was affecting space time.
The point of this rant, don't buy things on eBay with out knowing the actual size of it. In this case 9" meant a vice that was about 2 and a half foot long, and able to cause cold fusion if dropped.
If that is £50 including free international shipping I'd hazard the guess that my local scrap yard pays enough for cast iron that one could make a latte or two a week hurling these to the junk yard...
@@andersjjensen it's either a Jones and Shipman or a Bridgeport vice. I have seen more if them for sale (and it always makes me laugh that there is never anything to reference size) but they go for a minimum £150 so I got "lucky" with this purchase. Thankfully I have an engine crane if I ever want to use it. :-)
Don't feel bad, we used to have an aircraft carrier land yacht Cadillac whose bow wave would affect the weather in Canada...
I can beat that. I bought a bank of three six inch vices on eBay. I naively assumed that they were simply bolted to a plate but it turned out that they were manufactured as a trio of vices with a common base. We had to use a fork-lift to get it into the boot of my old Jag and I was relieved to get home without needing new springs. At my end, I had to use an engine hoist to get the gang of vices out of the boot and into the workshop. It should fit on my mill, but would make the table ridiculously heavy. I've been advised to cut the thing up and make it into three 6" vices - but that seems a shame. I simply cleaned it up and put it in a corner of the workshop until I can find a use for it. I wondered why no-one else bid on a set of three machine vices for £50. Now I understand...

There is a perfect one up there I'd die for but it's about £40k over budget and the guy has it on the market but won't show it because of the covid lockdown!

Fyi the ball on the top of your adjusting rod on your surface gauge is actually what you were supposed to use at squareness check you just flip your rof around do the ball is in the groove of the base and you press that up against your square block. Which creates your pivot point.
Now that's a useful comment..! Newbie comes away with another lesson...
Tony, if you are watching your comments, just wanted to say congratulations on the 1million subs. 👍
You made it to a million!!! Congratulations This Old Tony!!! Don't ever change.
And as the name suggests, the 6" vice has no work holding limit
Just a quick one. When checking for perpendicularity, rather than using a ball bearing or fitting the "bumper" to the base, just turn the main rod over so that the ball end is down, as that is what it's there for.
By far my favorite channel to watch on CZcams or any other platform. I hope all is going well and can’t wait to see a new video.
I miss you Tony..... Wish you and the family well. Come back soon.

...Priceless
When I cleaned out our shops KURT vices I found that it is a Half Sphere with the round on the movable vice. Hope this helps.
Hope you are well, Tony. Congratulations with passing 1M subs! Thank you for all the good educational entertainment you already have made for us. We´ll be waiting for you untill you feel well ready to get back in the saddle.
A milli a milli a milli a milli a milli a milli a milli a milli... Congrats man. And for those of you that don't bother checking ToT's channel's links here's a quote from the man himself-
"ONE MILLION! 🥂 (and quick update.)
First and foremost, THANK YOU! Impossible to believe a million of you enjoy hanging out with some guy in his garage... but more on this later.
On a somber note, and the reason I ain't been around these parts lately: lost my father-in-law. wife lost her dad. kids lost their grandpop. He was a great guy who checked out way too young and left a big hole.
Hate to be a downer, so keeping it short. Please bear with us as my family tries to get used to the new normal; fact of the matter, he was a significant part of me being able to sneak away and play with you folks.
Will be back soon... and we'll pick this party back up in style.
xo,
OldTony"
My Deepest condolences too the whole family.

I miss you, Tony
I think it would perform brilliantly
Super
cool
All bright and shiny.
Not entirely, when you're machining to .001" (about .0254mm exactly) this vice could give some very slight errors, but if you're machining to .0001 (.00254mm) then it would be rubbish. For a milling machine like TOT has, he isn't likely to be chasing tenths or microns, but if you have an actual real CNC mill and you're making parts as a business, this thing is very likely to be garbage and isn't nearly good enough for the work, if you need high precision that is.
@Jeremy Raab rare for manual but not unheard of for certain parts when it comes to CNC, its more common in very technical parts that can't be ground or lapped afterwards
Tony, Wish you all the best. Your content is beloved half for the technical savvy, half for the humor and half for the editing
i just found your channel and subscribed. Your humor is a breath of fresh (but oily) air. Thanks for putting these vids together. I hope all is well.
We miss your voice and stories ☺️
I purchased the four inch quite a few years ago and it was brand new right out of the box; I had to rebuild it. It was a Kurt Anglock type but the bearings had to be replaced, the main shaft had to be made anew and the half ball which holds the rear sled down to the bed had to be remade. First thing was to set the mill to surface grind and grind the vise parallel to the mill's table. The new half ball was hand ground from a very nice ball bearing. I had to saw the bearing in half with diamond saws then surface with diamond plates. Then the two mating surfaces had to be remated and finally, I ended up with an accurate and reliable vise with repeatability. I also saw the grain structure of my vise and it was very much open. Vise was made in USA Far East (China).
Missing this channel, hope this respite is temporary but if not, thank you for an amazing run from a viewer who appreciates the humor, quality, and effort required to make each video.
One million ! Outstanding. A testament to the level of quality and entertainment in all your videos. Well done, and take as much time as you need.....Family is family, youtube is just youtube.
13:16 perfect of example of why "This Old Tony" is one of the best CZcamsrs
Amazing work on the 1 million subs and can’t wait for the 1 million subscriber video as I remember the 100 thousand subs video and can watch it time and time again and laugh every time
