"One day as a young wife and mother of 37 years of age, I was busy with my regular household tasks. Suddenly, I became so filled with the sense of nearness to the Master that, wondering how one could live without Him, either in joy or pain, these words, "I Need Thee Every Hour," were ushered into my mind, the thought at once taking full possession of me."
After writing the lyrics, Hawks gave them to her pastor, Robert Lowry, who added the tune and refrain. The hymn was first published at the National Baptist Sunday School Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, in November 1872. Some years later, after the death of her husband, Hawks wrote:
"I did not understand at first why this hymn had touched the great throbbing heart of humanity. It was not until long after, when the shadow fell over my way, the shadow of a great loss, that I understood something of the comforting power in the words which I had been permitted to give out to others in my hour of sweet serenity and peace."

We really need our gracious Lord every moment of our lives even when asleep, or we are no more. We exist because He is.
We exists because of Him, no Pope no pas6or. He wakes up on a morning and we are dependent upon Him an.no one else.
How refreshing to have this beautiful old hymn sung the way it was meant to be. Brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for posting this!

I'm an atheist now, but when I hear something like this I can almost suspend my disbelief and return momentarily to my Methodist upbringing. The sheer beauty of this lovely hymn and the emotions it generates wash over me and take me right back over the years. What a contrast to the horrible, clunking, one-note, boring "worship songs" so prevalent nowadays. I doubt whether Sankey and Moody would have succeeded as they did if their ministry had been backed up by those.
better take another good look at those scriptures; this life is soon over and you want to have some hope for the hereafter.

Today i am a pastor proclaiming the word of the Lord.in some churches they only sing chorusses .they do not know the riches of beautiful songs inspired by the HOLYSPIRIT to the authors of these Hyms.
