i spent the winter working my way thru Nigel Hamilton's three volumes on Monty. tons of detail of course but from what i got out of it outside the entertainment of the read was that Montgomery pulled the British army out of the 19th and into the 20 century. in the US we don't hear much about him given all the attention to our generals but i think he stands head and shoulders above most if not all of them and i say that as a Army Vet who reads his history.
Swedish American Total Bullshit. He did not plan Market Garden, it was left to Bereton and others. And it probably would have succeeded if not for Gavin and the US 82nd Airborne Division. And if you’re so concerned about massive casualties funny you don’t whine about Metz, Hurtgen Forest or the Bulge. Monty was the greatest and most successful allied general.Thats why the Americans went running to him and asked for his help during the Battle of the Bulge. And I quote: “The operations of the American 1st Army had developed into a series of individual holding actions. Montgomery's contribution to restoring the situation was that he turned a series of isolated actions into a coherent battle fought according to a clear and definite plan. It was his refusal to engage in premature and piecemeal counter-attacks which enabled the Americans to gather their reserves and frustrate the German attempts to extend their breakthrough.” German commander of the 5th Panzer Army Hasso Von Manteuffal.
@@bigwoody4704 lilwoody Whittaker. just because you are a leading member in Americas most inbred family does not give you the right to potty mouth nice people..now get back home to your trailer and let yer mom/sis/wife change you diaper.
Read "Monty's Men" by John Buckley a fine military historian who writes with absolute academic objectivity. Absorbing and perhaps the first stage in a re-assessment of Montgomery as military commander.

Montgomery was a polarizing figure, no doubt; but he was a single-minded soldier completely dedicated to the aim of total victory.
Both he and Churchill were rebellious to say the least but then we needed tenacity and they both had it in spades

Monty
9:20 - Of course they did...
Montgomery was a bigger hindrance to the allied war effort than the Germans.
Rubbish.
Care to explain?
