    (Sarinda slept serenely in blankets of mud and faded glory, dreaming of the past. But now she is stirring and paying attention to the new activity inside her wooden walls; and just maybe her dreams can turn to the future and what might be again.) Well, you guys have had a glimpse now of that possible future and I hope it stirs you as much as it did me seeing her sister today.

    Great episode Guys! My Uncle served on the Canadian built version of the "Flower Class" Corvettes in the North Atlantic during WWII. He was born in the middle of Canada in the prairies. When asked why a farm boy like him joined the Navy he replied "I figured that would be the only way I would ever see the ocean."

    The Rolls Royce may have been the best cars the brits built but no one built engines as beautiful as Gardner. I worked on them as an apprentice and so quiet when running in boats! .150 HP doesn't sound much but the torque is enormous.

      @@Aussietrucker Yeah, think you're right. Makes sense for pottering about on a fairly calm Solent!
      There is something inherently reassuring about the sound of a Gardner: one of the few things I never drove in my trucking career, but I came across them in pumps, gen sets etc., and unlike the more common Perkins, Cat, Cummins or FPT units, I rarely if ever gave the gauge panel more than a cursory glance.
      Saying all that, I'm looking forward to hearing Sarinda's Cats working away, based on experience of a 3208 gen set: that thing lurching into life scared the animals for a half mile radius...😂

    @p.a.reysen3185 Před 3 lety +1

    F A N T A S T I C video, the best yet to be posted and remember there is so much yet to be. FIND THAT BELL. It is the heart of any ship. Without it, the boat is just another hole in the water. Also find that other boat that has been converted as mentioned. If it can be accomplished, go visit that ship and talk to it's crew. I just hope if you get that chance that the children can accompany you to maybe realize the life that comes with owning such a boat. If you think about it, the Medusa is a valuable book in your library. I hope there is much more footage that was taken during your visit. In fact, the Medusa Trust just might have archival films and videos that you might ask to see and copy. By the way! Where is your ships log! Every ship has a logbook that entails the operations of the day, in-port and underway. It is meant to archive event and work done of the day. This is the Captain and crews history. May I suggest that somewhere on the bridge a log is permanently placed and just like that first morning tea, the place and souls onboard, and what work will be done and by who, is entered. As the work progresses, these events are noted in the ship's log. This is YOUR history, and should be a religiously responsibility to be done daily. With these videos of Medusa and others that may come, I hope you have now seen how the ship was and the meticulous attention attention to the basics on how the ship was constructed, on how the electrical systems were laid out, how clean the Medusa has been kept. Your previous owners were the worst that could happen to your boat. They had no concept of what should have been done to create a life. And how these ships' came alive. That crew gave such great advice. Remember, as they have stated, first you build a boat, then once that has been accomplished, you build the ship with the amenities you want. Baby steps. Develop a need to learn about what Sarinda needs and how not to do what's easy but what's correct. Again, you are all loved (Simon is exempt) and as these videos are given out, the entire world is becoming your oyster and you have the pearl. From the NW Colonies, till next time, safe mudding!

  • @Ps119

    Brings back a lot of memories. Served in many ships but this type was my favourite. You guys have done a fantastic job restoring this ship to what she was designed to be. The designer of this craft was obviously very clever and really knew what he was doing, for example, use of solid bulkheads for strength and safeguard watertight integrity, several separate compartments to contain flooding, main fuel tank outside of the engine room to reduce fire risk, twin engines for tight turning and being able to keep moving if one engine is lost, and an excellent hull that can roll to take the sting out of bad weather and very strong so it can survive slams and corkscrewing motion. We used this ship in a way that she was not really designed for and went through worse weather than many larger vessels could not handle - though we had rubbing strakes and other items torn off and washed away on rare occasions. She was safe in big seas provided we were not in too much of hurry. Only frightened once for a few seconds in a confused sea when she was hit twice in quick succession so rolled uncommonly far when we were heading for shelter in a port that was not permitting other ships to leave due to the weather - other than that she felt very safe where she literally rolled with the punches and just kept on going.

As we did so, we came across a small flotilla of Second World War boats that would have gone to pick up the troops coming back after the first attempt! We were doing 9 knots and the others were doing about at best 4! Then it hit me! Just how they were all sitting ducks! They were all extremely brave people back then!

    2:18 So it's an RDF day (rain, drizzle and fog) in the small Newfoundland fishing village I live in, I've just stumbled upon this video via several other boat-repairing videos, and I'm listening to the bloke talk about the ex-crewmember who got emotional when he was talking about his mess mates and who brought photos of them to these guys...I'm welled up with tears at it all. Seeing photos of those young sailors, making the best of it, not knowing what tomorrow would bring them. Makes me think of my Dad (ex Fleet Air Arm and RCN) and my Mum (a WAAF) and how they always said despite the horror of it all, the War was the most exciting time of their lives. Makes me realise how much I miss them both too. Oh my.

    Wow takes me back to my navy days! Love the cramped quarters and how every space is used. The most feared weapon on board are the depth charges! The way they sink a submarine is by percussion not by blowing a hole in the hull. Much like an auto striking a pedestrian, they are literally knocked out of their shoes. The percussion forces the submarine down and the hatch stays in place opening the hatch allowing water to pore in and sink the sub! We had to bolt steel plates below the hatches, like man hole covers with bolts every 2 inches. That would move with the sub in case the hatch blew open. Sailed with the Canooks , Canadians, and Limeies, British sailers. When drinking with them we would ask them if they knew what it said on the bottom of the beer bottle? Open other end! How to describe this episode - incredible, fantastic, unbelievably great, wonderful, insightful, stupendous inspirational, and on and on. You both have so much to do but you’ve seen what the mountaintop looks like now, so you have the inspiration to labor uphill. The crew of the Medusa were so encouraging and admired what you both are doing. So admire that you want to do your repairs the right way.

    As built they are beautiful sleek ships. With the hull in the original configuration, and engine control/command systems. Incredible little ships. Great to see one in original condition.
