My Dad drove across the bridge ( that fell on top of the train) every morning at the same time as the train went passed underneath. The morning of the crash Dad was late because he was picking up a co worker, which saved his life.
What? and further expose the no account, parasitic nature of our ruling class who have rorted & scammed & fleeced & gutted & sold & milked & schemed the country for over 40 years? Our MSM/TV Stations are all now run by the kind of greedhead grubs who prefer to bury this type of historic expose. This movie was largely made in Brisbane between the Kedron Brook and the Toombul Shopping Centre car park almost under the Sandgate Road bridge. A rail line now runs through the site to the Brisbane Airport. We were contracted to repaint old QLD Ambulances & FireTrucks to make them represent NSW vehicles for this movie. We also provided some 1960s and 1970s cars including 2 HT Holdens to the production company. We supplied vehicles for another production about Sydney but filmed in QLD... Mister Reliable... The oportunist butcher with the sausages in that yarn drove my grey 1958 FC Holden ute. Some cars were used in both movies. We must guide our younger generations to these programs to give them an idea of what it used to be like to be FAIR DINKUM.
The Australia of the 1970’s no longer exists. Australia now is extreme multiculturalism and 1) none of them could care less about our past and 2) it would now be considered racists as there’s only white people.
My dad was on the train before the crash that fateful day heading to work in redfern and some of his friends were sadly on that train that fateful day my father broke down and cried . My father in law was actually on the train that crashed that fateful day luckily he survived may they all rest in peace😢
I actually drove past the set near the Toombul shopping centre on the way home from Brisbane Airport in 1997? If memory serves me they utilised part of the shopping centre carpark for the disaster scenes and a high wall which boarded the highway, which was lined with emergency vehicles. As we got closer I noticed the age of these vehicles and to my astonishment saw they were wearing NSW Emergency Services markings for Ambulance & Police Rescue ,then I saw the collapsed bridge and I said to my wife they must be making a movie on the Granville train disaster. As a sidenote, I was 14 in 1977 and I still remember seeing the Bold Street Bridge days after the disaster whilst on school holidays. My dad was a courier at the time and I would often help him out over the holidays, it was pretty eerie seeing this movie set after seeing the real thing years earlier.
They also used South Brisbane (as Parramatta), Banyo (the workshops) and Wynnum (where Paul Mercurio climbs the wooden footbridge) amongst other Brisbane filming locations, although the shots involving the 46 class loco were obviously filmed in Sydney.
Unfortunately as in many disasters the vultures circle. The press who got in the way, the crowds, and the stinkers who stole from the victims and the emergency vehicles. It's a pity that the victims and the rescuers need to be protected. I know this tragedy had long term effects on many and l hope those folks had support from everyone. However when the Titanic sank there were company people sneaking about getting survivors to sign releases.saying they wouldn't sue and such... God help us all.
Thankyou so much for putting this two part tv series on, important history, heartwrenching true stories. Like others I have been searching for this for 20 years. Saw it first on TV in Australia when I lived there, had recorded it to show my kids when they grew up and could understand, but unfortunately I lost the video, I'd recorded it onto while moving. I recommend this highly. My heart goes out to all the families that lost loved ones, all the survivors and rescuer's whom have to deal with the emmotional as well as physical scars. Also to everyone whom contributed wholeheartedly to the coroner's inquests and their families whom also had to deal with the consequences of discovering the truth. Bless you all.
This movie was brilliant, my heart goes out to all those who died and the families that were affected by this disaster. Honestly this movie actually made me cry, the first movie to do that to me. Thank you for making this available for people to watch
My aunt was meant to be in the train that day but fortunately as it was she suffered from Endometriosis which left her having to call in sick. Sadly her friend who she travelled to work with was crushed to death as a result of being on it. They often went in together. The only thing they found to identify her was a locket and bracelet she wore. For years my aunt had survivors guilt. But it was a blessing she had pain that kept her home. 💔
I had an uncle on the train, sitting up the back on that day. My dad was only 9 at the time was walking with his grandmother down to the train station to meet him when. Dads always told me they stepped onto the bridge with intentions of crossing to be on the same side as the train station, they heard the train approaching and decided to step off the bridge and just wait on the other side of the road for him instead. If they hadn’t turned around and walked off the bridge when they did then they would’ve only made it half way across before the impact and possibly would’ve been 2 more casualties
I grew up in Granville & remember that morning very well. Mum was a blood donor & she went & donated after they put it out on the TV radio that they needed blood. This is possible the saddest movie I have ever seen. :(
Kylie l can’t thank you enough. My late mum was a nurse and at this time she heard so much of what happened, so many horrific things and so many positive ones as well. It’s heartbreaking with everyone’s personal feelings and thoughts getting mixed up with something of this scale. Heather Mitchell was awesome, I remember her most from this. Thank you so much for uploading this.
Nsw was born from The Rum Corps into corruption and ruin. Granville and the Luna Park Ghost train fire are only two examples. Thanks for adding this frankly harrowing miniseries .
I have been looking all over CZcams for this movie. Thank you so much for uploading it. This is awesome. R.I.P. to all those train passengers that died in that horrific accident.
Thank you so much for uploading this. Saw it on Channel Ten s a teenager in the late 1990s... it's been on Foxtel ONCE that I know of circa 2005 but since then I've been hunting high and low for this online. Best line comes circa 3 hour mark: where Margaret goes to get her shoe from Gerry Buchannon, and you can hear him screaming down the station. Imagine - sacking a man simply because he chose to go and save people's lives. So, he was on leave at the time? So what? He's still trained even when not officially on the clock. They weren't paying him so wtf was the problem? Yeah, I'd tell them "they can all go and get stuffed for Christmas" too.
I have watched this over 50+ times. Studied it in school also, when I was doing my dregree in Desater Management. Also Glenbrook and the 3801 Hawkesbury Accident. Amoungst other's like the Passa Bulka Ship. I studied footage and Pictures that Public will never see. But the Granville One had the biggest impack on all of us who studied it.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I have ALWAYS loved this miniseries. My mother recorded it on VHS when it was first aired and then I bought it on dvd a few years ago myself. No longer have the ability to play dvds so this is just perfect. Thank you!

Exactly. The desire to "balance the books" in the states' budgets meant maintenance and renewal of worn out equipment was deferred. Lead to jokes like Operating Railway Museum. Some money was spent on the railways, immediately following ww2, to replace worn out rollingstock. But, by the 1970's much was due again for replacement.
I'd argue ARTC hasn't changed much in Victoria's rail maintenance, and our many many freight derailings... I'd hate to see something as bad as this happen on our railways.
I cry if i have to go to granville by train and feel very sad and eerie going under the new built bridge i have visited the site and memorial and drove across the bridge makes me cry every time.😢
I was 7 years old and in the car with my mum. I remember clearly on the radio when the accident happened. This was very emotional to watch. Rest in peace ⚘️
I remember that day, I was 14 and on my way to Cowra with my father, we were just going into Lithgow when it came over the radio. I will never forget that day, we were getting ongoing reports over the radio, the music had stopped. Watching this, so much came back of the day 46 years ago. 10 years later I was working with a man who lost his job. He was driving a 110 ton crain and when found out from the radio he went to granville and not the job in Sydney. When his local councl found out, Norm was given a job for the rest of his life.
This was great. I knew of the Granville disaster (happened 2 years before I was born) and think of it every time I pass under the replacement bridge on the way to work.
I remember this movie playing on TV when I was a kid. I had no idea what I was watching & turned the channel to something else. Many years later I would move to Rosehill & catch the train at Granville to school not realising what had happened until my Mum told me about the disaster that had occured. RIP to all those people on this day.
Bottom line greed caused these deaths. It's Paul Mercurio of Strictly Ballroom fame. Wikipedia defines crushing syndrome differently. I learned another effect of crushing syndrome and it is when cells release potassium due to extensive damage to the tissues. Normally, there is a balance of extracellular sodium and intracellular potassium. The unusual extracellular level of potassium cannot be handled by the kidneys. This can lead to acute renal failure and possible multisystem organ failure leading to cardiac arrest. I learned this as a dietetic intern back in 1979 when I did my renal dialysis rotation.
They did such a good job on the class 46 they used as far as filming is concerned it looks great! Purest will say it's not the right livery for the time but I think it looks better the locomotive looks so eerie love when it arrives in Mt Victoria
Excellent film great actors almost real sites and on times very moving. My Mother was a nurse many years ago in the Mild May Missionary Hospital IN London England I have a photo of my mother in her nurses uniform together with her friend who became a nurse the same time as my mother.
With all the maintenance issues with public transport in Sydney at present, it is worrying how the current NSW State Government are not taking safety concerns and just push the concerns away on to the for-profit private sector.
I know a number of people who were involved in this incident, including gary raymond who is a well known friend of mine and i've been on tv with them such as sbs' inside central station and news programmes. It was and still is a horrific incident that should never have happened in the first place, i'm 19 years old and most young sydneysiders either teenagers or in their 20s have never heard of this tragic day
My dad lived in Granville, but at this time he lived in the Netherlands, but when this happend he used my glasses as a magnifying glass 🤦♀️. He was shocked when he saw the wrecks, always took the same train there. My best friend missed the train that morning, but her husband didn't know that, so he was an absolute mess when he heard, and drove as fast as he could and only found out hours later she was at home. RIP for al the victims 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I ALMOST FORGOT. I live couple suburbs away from Granville and walk across that bridge many times as it's near my favourite chicken shop. The new bridge It's still in the exact same place.
This happened 1 day after my 9th birthday, even today i cringe when i go past that part of the rail network. NSW Rail has had a long and sketchy history, I remember back in early 80s how the school train would regularly go through the Heathcote station and the kids would jump out and save that time it would take to reverse back. 1 time the train went through the station and stopped opposite the school, lot's of kids jumped out and straight away a whole bunch 9f railway detectives jumped up and grabbed the kids (obviously set up). Other times these detectives would wait for us to walk across the rails and than grab us instead of having just 1 bloke stand at end of station to stop the kids from going across
Onlookers blocked the paths for emergency responders. ACA did a damning report on the spectators, dubbed "ghouls" watching the rescue operation as takeaway food shops next to Granville Station did a roaring trade. The other side of the disaster.
So far it sounds like most transportation industry , they are not interested in providing safe transportation because it would cost them money and they don't want to spend money they just want to make it they will lie and cover up what really happened to protect their investors money, and not have to make improvements on shoddy transportation which would cost the investor's more money than they want to spend
Rewatching this on the anniversary in 2023. Granville was a tragedy that should NEVER have happened.
My Dad drove across the bridge ( that fell on top of the train) every morning at the same time as the train went passed underneath. The morning of the crash Dad was late because he was picking up a co worker, which saved his life.
It’s a disgrace that Australia does not play this movie enough on Aussie tv.
Thank you for playing x

My best friend missed the train that morning, but her husband didn't know that, so he was an absolute mess when he heard, and drove as fast as he could and only found out hours later she was at home.
RIP for al the victims 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
My parents wouldnt let me watch this when I was younger... I understand why now
I ALMOST FORGOT. I live couple suburbs away from Granville and walk across that bridge many times as it's near my favourite chicken shop. The new bridge It's still in the exact same place.
45th anniversary today.
I was born more than a year after the Granville disaster. I was told that an uncle of mine had missed that train, slept in.
Almost similar fate as the Eschede Disaster in Germany
New South Wales USED to be well known for corruption. This movie is a prime example of that.
My great grandfather helped pulling people of including those who had died he was so traumatised by what he saw that he never spoke about it

This happened in 1977 before I was born.
I was only born in 2012
This happened 1 day after my 9th birthday, even today i cringe when i go past that part of the rail network.
1:55:30 The way gary raymond saved this woman is astonishing, truth be told, i know him personally

Onlookers blocked the paths for emergency responders. ACA did a damning report on the spectators, dubbed "ghouls" watching the rescue operation as takeaway food shops next to Granville Station did a roaring trade. The other side of the disaster.
It is interesting to see what the nation was like in the 70s
So far it sounds like most transportation industry , they are not interested in providing safe transportation because it would cost them money and they don't want to spend money they just want to make it
they will lie and cover up what really happened to protect their investors money, and not have to make improvements on shoddy transportation which would cost the investor's more money than they want to spend
The bridge collapsed because of politics.
