  • The Westminster Confession of Faith has, for hundreds of years, served as the doctrinal foundation of the Reformed churches. In this series, Dr. Gerstner focuses his lifetime of scholarship on a comprehensive treatment of the meaning and application of this important confession for the life of the church. This is an exceptional series for pastors and church leaders.
This is the 5th in a series of messages by Dr. Gerstner on the the Westminster Confession of Faith. See other videos in the series: • The Westminster Confes...

“Why callest thou me good? None is good, save God.’’ Christ is talking as a man, and as a man He is infinitely below the deity, and acts accordingly and carries out His duty accordingly.

Especially if you read Mark 10:17-22, you’ll notice the rich young ruler’s fatal error. After calling Jesus “GOOD Master,” Jesus says, as you pointed out, “Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God” (Mark‬ ‭10:18‬). The ruler’s response SHOULD have been: “Indeed, Lord! Only God IS good, and that is precisely why I callest thou good, for thou art God enfleshed!” But he doesn’t say that, and instead responds to Jesus: “Master.”
Notice the absence of “Good” in the ruler’s address, effectively showing that the ruler does not believe Jesus is either good or God, similar to what you have stated. Mark is very intentional with his language throughout his Gospel. Here, Mark shows the fatal error of unbelief in Christ’s true nature, that is, if one is to inherit eternal life then one must acknowledge Jesus as He truly is: “The Word... with God and was God... made flesh” (John 1:1, 14). Without faith in the Godman as their Divine Representative, one inevitably places confidence in one’s own flawed works and will perish (as seen in the rich young ruler’s case). But if one repents of sin, believes on Jesus as their Lord and God, and follows Him, eternal life surely awaits.

28:10 He bites his tongue, “the one who became God,” obviously he meant “the one who became man.”

8:32 Dr Gerstner thought DIATHEKE but DIAKONIA came out of his mouth.
