  • Today's video features one of the most frequently utilized attachments on our property... the rotary mower. We are going to put our ole' 1970s Hardee mower to work with some mowing of our depleted garden plants as well as a mystery plant that our goats won't eat! E7

    I have a 1998 Massey Ferguson 231. It’s been a very good tractor.

      Same here. I grew up on Massey’s and have always had good luck with them. Thanks for watching.

      It’s a great cutter. Pretty sure they were made much stronger and heavier back in those days than some of the newer ones today. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🚜

      Yes I agree I've cut more with my old light duty cutter then most people cut with their new hd cutter or im just not worried about hurting mine

      Not sure, but you may be correct. I do know it was manufactured in Poland. It has been a great tractor, a real workhorse. Thank you for checking out the video and commenting.

      You don't even know how I am happy in this moment! :) I have to tell You that Your tractor will be working at least 100 years! MF manufacturing by polish engenieers are very solid and hard! Maybe they not made to 100% like English MF but....that why they better! Because in polish MF if you don't chanche oil or filter by 20 years or more-nothing goes wrong! It will be working like new one! But if you dont chanche oil in british MF then...R.I.P....we in Poland we have problems with british tractor technology sience 80ths....so I wish You all the best and...Maybe you will answer me to this message for 25 or 50 years and You tell me that your MF 231 is still running! ;) Greatings from Poland :)

      @@jozefurbanski7016 that is awesome. You are 100% correct. It is built like a tank. I believe it is a 1998 model, so 26 years old and still runs like new. They only issue I ever had was a bad battery cable. I’m so glad you saw the video and shared this information with me. If you go to my channel I have a few more videos I did with it if you’d like to see them. Thanks so much and take care.

    Hello, I have the same set up you do 231 with the hardee cutter, I dont have the weights on front of tractor. What are the benefits of your two weights on the front. Thanks

    • @backyardcountrylivin1514
      @backyardcountrylivin1514  Před 2 měsíci

      I have a pretty heavy MF disc harrow that makes the front end pretty light when lifting it. The weights help in that case and also I occasionally lift some heavy things with a boom pole. Just helps keep the front end down. That Hardee cutter has been rock solid for me, hope yours has as well. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting.

      Just wore sher pin down enough yesterday while mowing and pto slipped off brush hod pto. Bought new 5 grade silver threaded bolt but unsussesful with the imstall today and gave up. After lubing shaft and reatatching the new threaded bolt would not go through and tighten. While at massey dealer today we testesd the bolt prior. Do you have to have it in a certain position when slinding to spindle.?

    • @backyardcountrylivin1514
      @backyardcountrylivin1514  Před 2 měsíci

      @@gofishingfishing I was thinking that the spindle had a groove in it that has to line up with the bolt. My brush hog doesn't have the original gearbox, but i will look at it tomorrow and see if i can give you any more information. Years ago, we added a slip clutch to ours and I really like that setup. Don't have to worry about the sher pins.

      @@gofishingfishing I took a look at my Hardee mower and there are groves in the spindle that the bolts line up with, pretty much just like the one on the tractor pto shaft. As I was saying, my mower doesn’t have the original gearbox, so not sure if they are the same. Hope you get it worked out.

    Have you had any thermostart (glow plug heater) problems with the 231? I installed a new glow plug and a new ignition switch and I still don’t think it’s working but I’m not 100% sure.

    • @backyardcountrylivin1514
      @backyardcountrylivin1514  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hi Travis, I’ve never messed with the thermostat or glow plugs. As far as I know they still work, but as you said not a 100% sure. The glow plug light does come on when the ignition is turned on and it does seem to start ok after waiting a minute or so before cranking on colder days.

      I did some searching and got the same results you did, not luck finding anything that looks like the originals. You might try contacting a tractor salvage yard. I know there are a few around here in NC. I think there is one in Fremont, NC called Greene’s. I went there years ago and from what I remember it was a giant tractor salvage yard. Good luck with your search.

    We just got our 235 hooked up to a bush hog. 5 rows of corn later and the throttle stops working. We had it in the shop for a few months and they forgot to put the cotter pin in linking the throttle lever to the carb. Not to mention, it's still leaking hydraulic fluid, so they didn't even do what they were supposed to. I apologize for my tangent, but the reminder gets my blood boiling.

    • @backyardcountrylivin1514
      @backyardcountrylivin1514  Před rokem +1

      If I’m cutting think heavy stuff I’m usually in low range and 3rd gear. If it’s normal lighter stuff, high range and 1st gear. In both cases I’ve got the Rpm’s around 1800. Hope that helps and thanks for watching and commenting.
