(WARNING: Crash Footage) Will Au-Yeung's Drive Up Pikes Peak 2022

  • A blisteringly fast time attack run up a cloud covered mountain takes a turn for the worst. Watch @pztuningwill ‘s run from last weekend’s event at Pikes Peak driving his Vibrant Performance Time Attack Honda Civic (9th gen). While stage 4 didn’t go as hoped, we know you’ll agree that his work in stages 1-3 was amazing, especially with so much fog. Thanks to @sparcousa for providing excellent safety gear and to the safety staff for their swift response.
    We would also like to extend our gratitude to the numerous first responders on staff that came to Will's rescue after the crash. They acted swiftly and effectively, prioritizing Will's safety and putting themselves at risk while clearing the car and debris from the racing line.

    Let's take a moment of silence so we can really appreciate the quality of the welds on this holy roll cage. The fact that he was able to open the door and jump out of the car right after the impact is truly an incredible demonstration of how far enginneers have pushed the boundaries of race car safety over the last two decades. I'm glad to see the driver's ok but I'm pretty sure he saw his whole life in living colours while he was flying in the air.

    • @malang724
      @malang724 Před 2 lety +108

      Agreed. The fact he survived isn't a miracle as the video states, but instead thanks to all the safety equipment and standards, from the seats and gear, to the roll cage, and everything in between. We need to stop blaming miracles for people's survival and start thanking the real heros... The drivers, the manufacturers, the engineers, the welders, the scientists that all make this dangerous sport safer so we can continue pushing limits.

      Triangulation is what gives a roll cage strength, not wellds, welds just keep the tubes from slipping out of place FYI..

      Totally! It’s amazing how well the car held together and kept him safe and basically unscathed. Will and his team at PZ Tuning fabricated the entire car from the ground up, from the cage, aero, mounting other safety equipment like seats/harnesses, etc 🤯.

    In case y’all were wondering, the camera used on the wing was an Insta360 ONE X2. It’s gyroscopic stabilization capability is one of the reasons why it was able to keep Will’s car in frame so well during the crash (with minor adjustments I had to do in post). We mounted it on his wing with a selfie stick setup in a way that the camera can still “hide” the mounting arms so it looks like there’s a drone camera following the car 🤘🏼

    Most viewers may not know this, but Will and his team at PZ Tuning built that civic from the GROUND UP. From the cage to the carbon fiber aero, I’m blown away by the talent involved to build a car to this caliber at their own shop, let alone be able to build it again/refine it over the years. This was the second iteration of the car and they will come back better than ever next year with a V3.
    Most watching also don’t know Will personally, but get that weather conditions like rain,snow, or fog will not stop him from pushing himself to beat the clock. He’s been that way for his entire professional career in motorsport, and it’s this determination that has made him set lap records around the globe. But with a fast car and being fast driver, you cannot skimp on safety equipment. The cage, his helmet/hans device, seats/belts are the reason why he walked away unscathed. But the miracle here is that the car didn’t end up rolling over the other side of the road and down the mountain. The further up you go at pikes, the scarier it gets and there’s only a handful of spots that are survivable in the event of a crash/off. Try driving up and visit pikes peak yourself in your own vehicle and you’ll understand why this hill climb event is one of the most difficult and dangerous racing events in the world.
