If the video was just 10 seconds shorter, it would be the perfect length.
clicked this thinking "yeah ive seen a million 808 tutorials this isnt gonna teach me anything new" but damn that was such a creative melody. I got so many ideas now. Subbed, quality content .
*watching on my phone*
Simon: “this is the 808 I’m using.”
*silence*
Goddammit.
@@cashdri phones don't have the capability of playing such a low frequency very loud so you can't hear the 808 alot the times
Placing a note with the velocity turned down just to cut them off was mind blowing for me xD so simple but i didn't think about that
Instead of making a ghost note you should make sure that you have it set to "cut itself" then turn the sustain, decay, and attack all the way down and turn the hold all the way up.
the "cut itself" function works differently in logic and maschine, but i know what you mean. I already know how this all works. I just wanted some notes to sustain and some notes being cut, exactly like in the video where simon cuts it off when another section begins. Hope this is understandable. But thank you :)
I know I'm late to the party. . . But an easier way for 3:31 - Go into your instrument envelope settings and make a square shape (Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release all the way down & Hold all the way up.) This means that your samples (assuming they are long enough, as your 808 is), will only play where they are drawn in, no more, no less.
Here in Brazil we have a recent rap banger called Xamã - Luxúria ft. Matuê" who has the same loop that you used in this video. Nice work bro, cheers!
Dude you’re actually so great! Someone who isn’t full with drugs and knows some Music Theory!
gumbymofugga you kinda have a point, but you really gonna take meth over sugar?
808s can be melodic too 😢
@@user-eo3vh5gq7o it comes down to semantics! basically everyone talks about the drum kit sounds, but the really cool thing about the TR-808 was the ability to program and sequence out drum patterns for the first time. Prior to the tr-808 you would need a real live drummer. Every drum in that kit has a specific name. Learn them and stop SAYING 808's. It sounds stupid.
music.stackexchange.com/questions/65798/why-cant-drums-produce-melodyd
洛旦 808 has become shorthand for pretty much any punchy, decaying synth bass sound. They sound similar to the synthetic kick drum sound used in the tr808 (that’s where the nickname comes from) but virtually none of the “808s” you’ll hear in modern music actually come from a tr808.
Man dude you're a freaking beast! Nice videos, a good fast pace thats understandable but also just mindblowing when it comes to your workflow and skill.
Turn down the ADSR all the way down on the 808 but leave the sustain (or hold) all the way up. This makes it so you don't have to do that 0 velocity ghost note thing.
This guy is awesome, one of the best tutorial youtuber I've come across, very knowledgeable and explains in detail just doesnt click things, actually explains the theory behind it, amazing. Thank you brother! Much respect
Of all the tutorials on using DAWs to make beats, this is the first that actually included some music theory which is very helpful. Not asking for a music theory course but it’s great to the right balance of tech how to and music how to...thanks for the tutorial!
Bro this video is one of the best 808 tuts on youtube hands down.
Its the perfect speed to learn not to fast but also not to slow
Thumbs up to you good sir
To keep the 808's from bleeding over, if you right click on the sample and select "Cut Itself" it'll make it on a trigger so that it will immediately cut off when the next note plays, and still allows you to do slides.
You can actually turn down the decay, sustain and attack and turn the hold up and it will carry the 808 to the end of your note you click in instead of having to make the ghost notes with cut itself... gives you the tiniest bit of extra control over the sound and would help your already insanely quick workflow...
Yeah my friend taught me that a while back. I'm just so used to the way I do it, habits and whatnot
This was the first Video i ever saw from you Simon! It was in my recommended and the progess you achieved is just amazing. Keep going Simon! You are a big part in my Beat making "career"!
Your beats are so dope & kinda hard, but your personality seems so upbeat & happy. Interesting dichotomy. You explain everything very well.
Just a suggestion Simon:
If you want to make sure that your 808 does not continue on to the next bar, you can right-click the 808 sample when you're in your channel rack, and click "Cut self." This will ensure that, when the next 808 plays, it will cut off the last 808. Just a suggestion!
the point was that he didnt want the 808 to continue playing if he didnt want any 808 in the next bar
Okay, this is probably one of the best videos i've found on the subject so far. Great work, instant sub.
Thanks man! I am learning allot from your videos! Can't wait to check out the free stuff you are providing. I am broke, so this will help! Keep making great videos.✌
My man's gonna pass me in subs next month I'm calling it 👀 Your 808 game is fyeeeeeeee 👌
1 MILLION VIEWS!!!🐐🐐
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Great tutorial ,thank you!
I've been watching tutorials for like months now on how to be more productive in Fls. You just made my day with that simple velocity trick to stop bleeding. Thanks so much!!!!! You have some killer talent brotha..\
Thanks a lot for your help! Enjoyed the energy in this video.
I made a complete playlist of all your videos and I look when I can loop to improve me you're the best it will not surprise me that you get to 100K
I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking you should do a series on music theory. The concise way you explain concepts really works and I think some videos on the side where you dive into the nitty gritty of the musical side of things would be awesome.
+1, you do talk a bit fast though, which I understand for these videos but if you do happen to narrow down on the basics of music theory it'd be cool if you slowed down a little bit. Your videos and music are awesome by the way.
This video is the gratest video I have ever seen about 808's. Thank you so much man.
Bro... You're amazing. You're beats are super complex and are super original. Keep it up!
I'd love to learn the piano and learn music theory but i don't know where to get started
Your videos are professional quality I hope that one day you won't be this underrated. ;)
Tnx for tutorials.
Great video. I knew almost all of these - *BUT* it's always good to investigate further BECAUSE I *still* learned something new later in the video. I had never considered cutting the legs of my 808 notes a millimeter short to prevent bleed overs. I just went through all the extra trouble of reprogramming the bass. I always make my 808's from scratch to save money, avoid stealing, and keep organized. But I was doing a lot of unnecessary work just to fix a minor and rare [for my style] problem that has a simple solution. It sounds amazing, not abrupt and disorienting. This shit lit.
The explanation about bass lines was amazing. Short, quick and concise. Thanks for the video
One of the best videos that I'v ever seem about this! Thanks man, it's helping a lot!
What a beat bro ! Really liked the slides and also the hihats !!! Keep it up !
Hands down the guy just legit explained everything u need to know in less than 10Mins ..always wanted to know what makes that sound after so long I just found out they called 808 slides wow
My gosh bro you are the best fastest tutorial guy I have ever seen and all your tips and beats are goooooooooood. Nice on bro keep it up you are amazing
Great video!
You're killin it dude! Insane growth! Videos are crazy good 💪
You really are an awesome producer! Thanks for all the tips, really helpful!
I sneezed at the same time as you and it freaked me out.
Excellent vid! Clear, to the point, easy to understand. I might actually check for those loop kits, they seem great!
lol. nice coming back here. this was one of the first videos i found of yours and i knew nothing. its been a minute, and wow this was good.
Very good tutorial Simon!
Couple extra tips: Max out velocity on the 808 to preserve the strength, also layering the 808 with brass hits will make it sound more epic
Never thought to use edison for pitch info. That makes things a lot smoother for workflow. Thanks.
This is really awesome bro. Thank God for people like you.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🔥🔥
Hey Simone, I’ve been watching your channel for awhile and learning a lot and just wanted to say thank you so much for the inspiration, entertainment, and the guidance. I’m still having trouble tho with my 808’s, tuning them and placing them right. I’d greatly appreciate some more help please
It's amazing how the Roland TR-808, a drum machine that came out way back in 1980, is still being used to produce new kinds of music in 2018.
Most productions of today don´t use 808 anymore. this and most others are VSTs.. the 808 was analog, this VSTs are digital. with the real 808 you couldn´t do basslines like that.
Most productions today sample/simulate 808 sounds. There's only a limited number of original 808 machines available today, and they're expensive. Nowadays, it's easier to use 808 samples, which you can manipulate in ways you couldn't do with a real 808. But there are some advantages to a real analog 808. For example, deeper low-frequency bass. The 808 was known for blowing up speakers and almost earthquake-like bass.
What about them sticks that stoneage humans used to make a beat with XD
Now that is amazing.
@@kalashsarode Banging sticks on drums was pretty much the standard drumming technique for thousands of years... up until the Roland TR-808 came along in 1980 and changed the game.
Will you please do a walk through tutorial of this exact beat from scratch? Every sample selection, every mixing decision, every button pressed, etc...A Complete walk through.....Whether you choose to or not, I have to say thanks for doing what you do. I never seen any of your videos until now. This is my first, but I immediately subscribed... Great work man
Great job with those 808s giving me some good ideas🎹 🔥
Glad to see someone else acknowledges texture sonically, not just subs.
LOTS OF POTENTIAL . Noice.
Your musical IQ is so refreshing!! Thanks for all I've learned from you!!
Super efficient video, man. Great stuff!
Saturn is literally a multiband saturator, so you don't have to eq after, just saturate the bands you actually want. You only want to EQ after if you specifically want to control the crossover of the filtered frequency, in which case something like Pro-Q2 will let you chose to filter anywhere from 6db to 96db slopes with Q control.
Also i get what you were trying to say, but it doesn't matter how good your 808 is, or any element is, it's gonna need mixing. You might not want to creatively PROCESS them further, sure, but the creators of those samples didn't create them with your project specifically in mind (because how could they, unless you're making real cookie-cutter music). That being said, you don't really need to worry about mixing it if you're doing the sound design/creating from scratch because you are of course creating the ideal sound during synthesis. Hope this helps!
Awesome video. Big thanks for explaining how slides work. It's hard figuring these kinds of things out, without knowing what their name is or how they work, sub earned
YOu a beast bro. Cant wait to see whats in store for the future! True inspiration.
That was a sick beat
pro tip: instead of counting the semi tones down and using the pitch knob, just right click the note of the detected pitch (in this case F2) in the channel rack of the sample.
Thanks man, I just explained it slowly to go step by step for the beginners. It doesnt take me that long 😋
@@ServidaMusic Ironically, you counting it helped me to understand something about music theory that I never knew before. It made me take a real hard look on my keyboard. Then I proceeded to make some fire beat!! 😉🔥
This is really gonna help me!!! And that beat is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is such a great video, very helpfull for those who need this 💯
ur so sick bro...
btw if u go to the song settings and turn the attack to zero, decay to 100, sustain to 100 and release zero then u dont need the "ghost notes". it will only play when its in the piano roll :)
Servida Music I've been struggling on baseline for long ; this helped me so much !! Thank you you for these lessons !!!
808のトリックに辿り着くまでの
道のりがハイレベルすぎる🦋
Also when tuning the 808, you can go to the “miscellaneous functions” tab at the top when you click on the instrument in the channel rack, and where it says “root note” in the “select range and offset” section, just right click whatever note it was already tuned to and It will automatically tune it to C. It sounded like a lot but it only takes 10 seconds max if you only have 1 finger.
I'm pretty far with making music but this is a great tutorial my 808s still had some weakness but just had to create a ghost note for that stop thanks man!
Edit: A little tip for producers make a bass line in your head sing it in a mic and recreate it, makes it so much better and allot easier!
If you got keys / drum pads you can record em like that and get the same effect
Wow just found your channel, you are the man. Quick, to the point, talented and entertaining! Just uploaded my first beat making video man and this just inspired me so much.
Pretty awesome man. Your channel is dope. I’m learning a lot.
If Servida says it, then its legit one hundred percent
Ayyye that's the first time I saw someone use a "ghost note" in a tutorial. That is something I have been doing for years and I figured lots of other people did it as well but I never saw someone else utilizing it until now! So cool that you are mixing some music theory into these videos!
It turns off the note before its full duration, similar to having the release envelope all the way down
Wow your velocity stop trick is VERY GOOD thank you!
Subscribed man your teaching me alot. Little things make a big difference
this sample is from Luxuria by XAMA
Wow, that sounds really good and great explaining!
man God bless you. you are the best explaining!!!!! good God I needed this level up...
you the best
The goosebumps song by travis scott . The 808's are amazing !!!
This guy will soon change the world😮

Foda man 😁👏👏
Yoooooohhhhh! Love the vid bruv!!! Damn my 808's are gonna get so much better thanks
This video helped me a lot with finding out how to make my 808's more interesting and melodic. Thanks Simon!

Lmao when you added the perc it reminded me of the do you know de wae sonic that clicks his tongue
Excellent tutorial! Found the bass line tactic I was looking for but did not know the name of it.
You're getting surgical with them 808s! Always looking forward to see how others approach them. Thanks for the vid.

Hey Servida, just so you know, you’re in G minor, (you only have 2 flats) just because the chord progression starts on C minor doesn’t mean it is in the C minor key
Yeah I know, i didn't realize till after I recorded that part
