- I asked older Koreans (50+) in Seoul to guess ten modern Korean slang words, and also interviewed them to learn how they felt about recent language changes.

These folks seemed so friendly and ready to try, even if they only got 2 or 3 right! I hope I can stay that interested in how languages change & evolve when I’m in my 70s (though I’d still prob only get 10점 like that one guy kept saying) 🤣 할머님 할아버님 화이팅!! ♡

I want that 78 year old man to be my 베프. So funny. I only knew a few words but I'm almost 40 so hopefully that makes me old enough to not have to know slang ㅋㅋ.

I wonder if they could guess acronyms like ㄱㅇㅇ for 귀여워, ㅇㅋ, ㄴㄴ that kind of thing. (And I don't know that many yet so it would he fun to learn some new ones)

Hahaha! I teach my students '깍두기' because on the lunch menu in their classrooms, if I have time, I translate into English for them and if there is '깍두기' I write it as 'Gangster'. But they have no idea what it is, so I explain. Only the teachers in their fifties know this, but I learned it about ten years ago.
Also, another one is '좁쌀영감' which is used to describe a petty old man. It translates literally as 'Millet Old Man'. But if you use it towards someone in the countryside, you'd better run. Again, people in their fifties know this one.

Billy, when you were talking to the gentleman in the blue ball cap, there was a red sign behind you that said "Heavy Steak." What do they mean by heavy steak?!? Is it slang? 이 비디오ㄹ는 재미있었습니다!!
It's just the name of a restaurant that serves regular steak :)
I think it's actually not good to shorting words and adding slang words from nowhere. I hope the original language can survive this age and will become meaningfull and beautiful like in the past ❤
We can't gatekeep the evolution of language. Think about it, back in the day the english _you_ use would be slang in comparison to stuff like 'but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not'. Language is beautiful and meaningful when it can change to reflect our times, not when we try to keep it frozen in a glass case like a museum exhibit from ancient days.
Korean has always been adding foreign words to its language, so there is no such thing as an "original" Korean language. Modern Korean today is nothing like it was 500 years ago, or 1000 years ago, etc. It's a normal part of language to evolve.
Evolution of language is indeed good, but shortening and simplifying isn't. I just compare old with modern literature and its looks less challenging & wise as it used to be.
Instead we can add new words which reflect modern time phenomenons, like "PC" or "smartphone". Shortening words also negatively influence our memory and visual analysis, so I don't see how it is positive
@@tatjana7008 That "old literature" you're referring to was also altered with new words and shortened words at the time :) Simplifying/shortening language isn't a new phenomenon. Even Romans used slang, informal language, and dialect.
@@GoBillyKorean well they still shortened it to reasonable number of letters, if we start to use 3-5 letters for each word that drastically change our intellectual capacity. I've read researches on inpact on brain and I don't want underplay that factor. Especially with rise of A.I. we need to stay fit in brain and improve our thinking capacity. Internet was supposed to do this, but it has other effect unfortunately
